Description

Audie Award Winner, Solo Narration - Male, 2014

Audie Award Winner, Literary Fiction, 2014

The author of the classic best-sellers The Secret History and The Little Friend returns with a brilliant, highly anticipated new novel.

Composed with the skills of a master, The Goldfinch is a haunted odyssey through present-day America and a drama of enthralling force and acuity.

It begins with a boy. Theo Decker, a 13-year-old New Yorker, miraculously survives an accident that kills his mother. Abandoned by his father, Theo is taken in by the family of a wealthy friend. Bewildered by his strange new home on Park Avenue, disturbed by schoolmates who don't know how to talk to him, and tormented above all by his unbearable longing for his mother, he clings to one thing that reminds him of her: a small, mysteriously captivating painting that ultimately draws Theo into the underworld of art.

As an adult, Theo moves silkily between the drawing rooms of the rich and the dusty labyrinth of an antiques store where he works. He is alienated and in love - and at the center of a narrowing, ever-more-dangerous circle.

The Goldfinch is a novel of shocking narrative energy and power. It combines unforgettably vivid characters, mesmerizing language, and breathtaking suspense, while plumbing with a philosopher's calm the deepest mysteries of love, identity, and art. It is a beautiful, stay-up-all-night and tell-all-your-friends triumph, an old-fashioned story of loss and obsession, survival and self-invention, and the ruthless machinations of fate.

I really did not enjoy this book

Never ever will I pick up another book by Donna Tartt. This book should have been smaller. So much nonsense and unimportant details were added to this book that I completely disengaged from character and plot. I did not care what happened. I just wanted it to be over.

Overly descriptive and boring

This book goes to show that rave reviews don't always make for a great book. Sometimes I think people just get caught up in the hype.

I did not like this book. It was far too long and should've been edited more severely. It was overly descriptive of very mundane things that should be easy enough for the listener/reader to deduce themselves. The main character was unlikable, trite, bland and annoying. His best friend was stereotypical and a bit improbable but at least not as annoying as Theo.

The overall story was unbelievable and didn't make a whole lot of sense. So many coincidences happened in such a vast city, New York. The other characters were under developed so the reader/listener could not get a solid grasp on Theo's plight or viewpoint.

Really disappointed in this book. I couldn't wait till it was over. So glad it's done now I can move on to something more enjoyable.

Too often tedious.

Wanted to love this book. I tried but instead simply got through it by skipping over the self indulgent “ see how well I can write” bits. The narrator’s monotonous voice along with the terrible accents only diminished my experience over a very long 25+ hours. I got through it always hopeful for some satisfaction and meaning. But it wasn’t meant to be, for me. It must be me, as others found value in the investment of their time.

Terrible terrible narration

The guy’s voice is way too melodramatic and totally ruins this book. Whiny and poorly done accents

Loved it!

I thoroughly enjoyed The Goldfinch. Couldn’t wait to get in my car to listen to this amazing book. This book cost me dearly in extra shopping trips but it was worth it...lol. I live in the country and driving to go shopping or visiting family provided me many hours of listening pleasure. Highly recommend.

Fantastic way to fully absorb this book

David Pittu should win some kind of award for his performance in this book. Every accent, every person he portrayed was executed to perfection.

Boris, Amazing. Xandra, hilariously accurate. Hobie, perfection.... But Theo.... Theo was obviously the best.

Great!

Very well read story. I loved the detail and the way the author describes the art and antiques as well as his description of the emotions of the characters in a rather sad scenario. I really enjoyed the book and would recommend it.

I would never have been able to read this large a book, hence the audio version. Thoroughly enjoyed the story and David Pittu’s narration was outstanding!

fantastic!

the only thing to surpass the author's creation of an entire ensemble of richly drawn and completely authentic voices is the narrator's brilliant performance of them .
I regret that in the past I have given some other titles 5 stars. Should have saved that rating for this one. Even so I'd give this performance a 6. Really. Bravo!!

It Felt like defeating a mountain

Over all it was very well written, but it really difficult to finish this book. its took FOREVER! It started out good but then It lost momentum for me. It is a very long-drawn-out story with no climax. The story was heavy and hard to get through. If it wasn't for the narration I would have not finished. The narration was excellent!! His transition between characters and his accents were brilliant.
