Publisher's Summary

S. A. Chakraborty continues the sweeping adventure begun in The City of Brass - "the best adult fantasy I’ve read since The Name of the Wind" (number-one New York Times best-selling author Sabaa Tahir) - conjuring a world where djinn summon flames with the snap of a finger and waters run deep with old magic; where blood can be dangerous as any spell and a clever con artist from Cairo will alter the fate of a kingdom.

Nahri’s life changed forever the moment she accidentally summoned Dara, a formidable, mysterious djinn, during one of her schemes. Whisked from her home in Cairo, she was thrust into the dazzling royal court of Daevabad - and quickly discovered she would need all her grifter instincts to survive there.

Now, with Daevabad entrenched in the dark aftermath of a devastating battle, Nahri must forge a new path for herself. But even as she embraces her heritage and the power it holds, she knows she’s been trapped in a gilded cage, watched by a king who rules from the throne that once belonged to her family - and one misstep will doom her tribe....

Meanwhile, Ali has been exiled for daring to defy his father. Hunted by assassins, adrift on the unforgiving copper sands of his ancestral land, he is forced to rely on the frightening abilities the marid - the unpredictable water spirits - have gifted him. But in doing so, he threatens to unearth a terrible secret his family has long kept buried.

As a new century approaches and the djinn gather within Daevabad's towering brass walls for celebrations, a threat brews unseen in the desolate North. It’s a force that would bring a storm of fire straight to the city’s gates...and one that seeks the aid of a warrior trapped between worlds, torn between a violent duty he can never escape and a peace he fears he will never deserve.

Truly a world of magic

I read this book immediately after The City of Brass, and it did not disappoint. This is an amazing world that Chakraborty has created and following the characters through yet another series of brutal events added to their development without diminishing their suffering. The themes that I saw deepened in this second book were: how hard it is to work together to build something and how easy it is to destroy; the harm that is done when the parent's generation holds tightly onto their own power instead of giving it over to their children. I am looking forward to reading the finale of this stupendous trilogy, but am waiting until I have 28 hours of free time. WOW!

Plucky

Definitely a set up for book three. Am enjoying it but hoping it will not go past book three. Liked the story, am not particularly impressed by the narrator. She did a super job for the most part, but I am tired of narrators mangling consonants. ‘Didn’t’ is not generally pronounced dinnit yet that seems to be the new normal. All in all I would read more from this author and still listened to a book narrated by this particular narrator.

Entertaining and thought provoking

This started at a run and never stopped. This was both action packed and a great escape book while being thought provoking with its politics and discussions of bigotry and race relations.
And now I wait until January

One of my favourite books

I read the book and in anticipation of empire of gold I listened to the audiobook. I love the characters and the world she has built. Thanks for writing a story from another time, influenced by a culture so different from my own. The characters are complicated and interesting and the plot feels juicy, but not forced or outlandish. I enjoy that an effort was made for themes regarding greater humanity to be explored and the substance was not confined to romance or girl power stereotypes. I would love to see this story get the HBO treatment.

Truly enjoyed

When I first started reading I thought it was your typical forbidden love/enemies to lovers and wasn’t too into. The story was so much more. I listened to the whole trilogy and loved it.
It was a very slow start to book 1 though.

Great Story

I fell in love with the world that S.A. Chakraborty has created, The City of Brass was a book I could not put down.

This book is also just great but, it stuffers from a bit of bulk in the middle that hurt the experience a bit, but the last 25% of it just grabbed me and would not let go. I can’t wait till the next book!

I was worried it might not be as good as the first but it was almost better the rollercoster especially the end I guessed a few things but it really threw me for a loop with all the events I’ll be reading the next after this. (Spoiler ish! I am now shipping narhi with Ali my favourite characters both Dara makes me facepalm repeating the same mistakes) overall just enjoyed it.
