War heroes aren't usually called out of semi-retirement and sent to the far reaches of the galaxy for a routine investigation. So when Colonel Carl Butler answers the call from an old and powerful friend, he knows it's something big - and he's not being told the whole story. A high councilor's son has gone MIA out of Cappa Base, the space station orbiting a battle-ravaged planet. The Troubles. A quaint name for a horrific period in the galaxy's history. A period whose atrocities were superseded only by the terror of the Savage Wars that had come before. Almost no corner of the galaxy was spared a taste of terrible war, cutthroat intrigue… and remorseless death. In the aftermath, this battered galaxy now longs for peace and stability. The Republic, now reformed, seeks to govern by the rule of law. But no matter how sincere the reform, how earnest and well-meaning the ruler, some worlds refuse to place their destiny in the hands of others. Ever again.

Histoire
From the Audie-nominated narrator of The Martian. In eleven years' time, a million members of an alien race will arrive at Earth. Years before they enter orbit, their approach will be announced by the flare of a thousand flames in the sky, their ships' huge engines burning hard to slow them from the vast speeds needed to cross interstellar space. These foreboding lights will shine in our night sky like new stars, getting ever brighter until they outshine even the sun, casting ominous shadows and banishing the night until they suddenly blink out.

Description
From the author of Planetside, a Best Book of 2018 (Library Journal)
A military legend is caught in the web between alien intrigue and human subterfuge....
Following his mission on Cappa, Colonel Carl Butler returns to a mixed reception. To some, he is a do-or-die war hero. To the other half of the galaxy, he’s a pariah. Forced into retirement, he has resettled on Talca Four where he’s now Deputy VP of Corporate Security, protecting a high-tech military company on the corporate battlefield - at least, that’s what the job description says. Really, he’s just there to impress clients and investors. It’s all relatively low risk - until he’s entrusted with new orders. A breach of a competitor’s computer network has Butler’s superiors feeling every bit as vulnerable. They need Butler to find who did it, how, and why no one’s taken credit for the ingenious attack.
As accustomed as Butler is to the reality of wargames - virtual and otherwise - this one screams something louder than a simple hack. Because no sooner does he start digging when his first contact is murdered, the death somehow kept secret from the media. As a prime suspect, he can’t shake the sensation he’s being watched...or finally succumbing to the stress of his past. Paranoid delusion or dangerous reality, Butler might be onto something much deeper than anyone imagined. But that’s where Butler thrives.
If he hasn’t signed his own death warrant.

a worthwhile sequel
The sequel is just as good as the first book. It is not just a formulaic repeat either. Things from the first book had consequences that have impacted all the characters, so things start from a much different status quo which was immediately intriguing.
All the strengths from the first book are back. The humour of the main character, the fast pace, and the blend of mystery and action are all written and performed just as well.
The story is tightly connected to the events from the previous book and it was satisfying to get to see the consequences play out for the main character and how he chooses to deal with them.
If you enjoyed "Planetside" chances are high you will appreciate this one as well.

Great story, wonderful performance
Although much like the first novel, this story is nothing mind blowing or ground breaking, but it IS a wonderful excuse for some high stakes space mercenary nonsense. Fun, always upbeat, with a decent mix of 'marines in space ships' light military SciFi and surprisingly interesting world building. Great voice acting and a likable, gruff but not a dickbag main character really help to bring it all together, it is super refreshing to see some good military SciFi that doesn't have to lean on modern political memes to build it's setting and core conflict.
