Description

A Reese's Book Club Pick

“I loved this book. It gave me the same waves of happiness I get from curling up with a classic Christie.... The alternating points of view keep you guessing, and guessing wrong.” (Alex Michaelides, number one New York Times best-selling author of The Silent Patient)

"Evok[es] the great Agatha Christie classics.... Pay close attention to seemingly throwaway details about the characters’ pasts. They are all clues.” (New York Times Book Review)

A wedding celebration turns dark and deadly in this deliciously wicked and atmospheric thriller reminiscent of Agatha Christie from the New York Times best-selling author of The Hunting Party.

The bride - the plus one - the best man - the wedding planner - the bridesmaid - the body.

On an island off the coast of Ireland, guests gather to celebrate two people joining their lives together as one. The groom: handsome and charming, a rising television star. The bride: smart and ambitious, a magazine publisher. It’s a wedding for a magazine or for a celebrity: the designer dress, the remote location, the luxe party favors, the boutique whiskey. The cell phone service may be spotty and the waves may be rough, but every detail has been expertly planned and will be expertly executed.

But perfection is for plans, and people are all too human. As the champagne is popped and the festivities begin, resentments and petty jealousies begin to mingle with the reminiscences and well wishes. The groomsmen begin the drinking game from their school days. The bridesmaid not-so-accidentally ruins her dress. The bride’s oldest (male) friend gives an uncomfortably caring toast.

And then someone turns up dead. Who didn’t wish the happy couple well? And perhaps more important, why?

loooong and slow

This book came up as a recommendation and after seeing all the positive reviews I was hopeful. Ugh. I forced myself to finish this book that seemed to take forever to end. I was not a fan of the multiple narrators and the story itself wasn't great. Maybe I was spoiled by author Ruth Ware and Imogen Church as a narrator, but I wouldn't recommend this audio book.

The Guest List - highly entertaining

I couldn’t stop listening. Excellent narrations!. The characters are well-developed. Has a
Big Little Lies draw. Suspense is skillfully built with a solid scaffolding. Love the setting- westerly Irish island. Highly recommend for those who love mysteries with societal glam, sympathetic characters and nasty villains. Great fun!

good writing and storyline, but way too predictable

seems like every story and/or happening mentioned in the book was foreshadowing shoved right in my face.

to quote one of my favourite reviews on audible:

“this book is only a mystery if you are a turnip”

other than that a well-written book with interesting characters, but very disappointing at the end

Transparent.

The worst book I've read this year. Predictable, with a familiar plotline that has been done better. Characters are unlikable, so you don't really care who gets popped off. I kept reading, hoping to be proved wrong, expecting to be misled by false clues. But no. Bread crumbs as big as baguettes.

An excellent narration of a mediocre mystery

Listened to the audiobook to keep me entertained while walking and running. The narration is excellent, but the story itself is a mediocre mystery. None of the characters are likable, so a bit of an annoying listen. Also, while I couldn’t predict exactly who did it, the gist of the story and “who held a grudge” was predictable about 2/3 through. From there onwards, it was just tying the loose ends. I would not have read it in full if I had a paper copy.

Compelling!

Loved the many narrators. Listened in one day. Good story, quite compelling if not a little predictable. Still recommending it.

didn't expect to like it ... ended up enjoying it

in a book club and this novel was put fourth, not something i would have picked myself and felt like i was suckered into reading an oprah book of the month mainstream read at first ... it got good though and had me wanting to finish.

NOT a Thriller. Pretty Terrible.

I added this to my list because of the suggestion that this was a creepy murder mystery. Well, the murder doesn't happen until the very end of the book. The book is not a mystery or a thriller, it's a drama. The entire story leading up to the end is made of personal and family drama. At first it is annoyingly petty, then it deepens to over-the-top. Most of the 'twists' are entirely predictable and the "it's all connected!" moments get ridiculous. I think the only positive about this book is that it genuinely portrays both the daily underhanded, and more brutal misogyny women deal with. As for the audiobook, no complaints. The narrator performances are good (though extremely slow, definitely have to speed it up to 1.3 or higher).

Predictable with no closure

I could tell where this book was headed way too early on to make the story truly interesting past the half way point. I thought there might be twists I couldn't see coming to save the story, but alas there was nothing. Unless you're not use to ready thrillers, this will be underwhelming and predictable. Not only that but the author doesn't even offer proper closure for the different characters at the end. There could've been at least 2-3 more chapters to make you feel you hadn't completely wasted your time.. but no just unfinished storylines. I'm disappointed.
