Description

Includes an audiobook-exclusive episode of The Lila Rose Show featuring an in-depth discussion of the book and an interview with Lila’s sister, Caterina.

What makes your heart break for our broken world?

You want to make a difference in the world. You’re concerned about all the problems you see, the injustices and the suffering. But you don’t know where to begin. Designed for the aspiring activist or world-changer, this book is the key to get you started.

Live Action founder Lila Rose says transformation begins with heartbreak - with seeing the injustices around you and allowing that suffering to light a fire in your soul. In this book, she shares raw and intimate stories from both her personal journey and pro-life activism that will inspire you to become a champion for your own cause. Along the way, you’ll discover how to:

  • determine where the need for your gifts is the greatest and begin making a difference;
  • overcome insecurities and imposter syndrome and become a leader through practice;
  • find inner courage and confidence in the face of obstacles and criticism; and
  • bounce back from mistakes to continually grow and make a long-lasting impact.

The fight for a world that is more just, more beautiful, and more loving needs all of us. In allowing yourself to be wounded by the brokenness of our world, you’ll find the passion you need to make a difference - and draw closer to the one who truly saves.

Feels Scattered

Not to be misunderstood, I take no issue with the positions she holds. My criticism here is on literary grounds, and not an indirect attack on her views.

***

Is this a book about the author's personal journey to catholicism and the forming of her pro-life views? Is it a self-help book, to guide would-be activists about how they should go about leading a cause in general terms? Is it a memoir from the president of Live Action outlining the beginnings of that organization up to present day? Is it a book of advocacy, itself, for pro-life positions, based on personal stories from various sources? It's all of these things at once, and that's the problem.

Ultimately I would say this is a medley of ideas that are important to the author, including the cause she cares about, some key things she's learned about pursuing that cause, and in general anything that occurs to the author as belonging in a book from her experience or what she knows. In a word, it's scattered.

That's fatal for a book because I don't know who should read it. Do you want good pro-life arguments? It's not really structured for that. Do you want a self-help guide to being an advocate? It's kind of that but not really. Do you want to learn about Live Action? Perhaps half of this book will give some insight. Do you want to read a case for catholicism from protestantism? There are more direct books on that topic as well.

So, it just feels like the author is trying to do much, and doesn't do any one thing better than more dedicated books on these subjects. If you specifically want to learn about the headspace of the author, that's this book I suppose but it does come off as amateurish.
