Description

It's never too late to chase your dreams: Before she discovered running, Nita Sweeney was 49-years-old, chronically depressed, occasionally manic, and unable to jog for more than 60 seconds at a time. Using exercise, Nita discovered an inner strength she didn't know she possessed, and with the help of her canine companion, she found herself on the way to completing her first marathon. In her memoir, Sweeney shares how she overcame emotional and physical challenges to finish the race and come back from the brink.

There's hope and help on the track: Anyone who has struggled with depression knows the ways the mind can defeat you. However, it is possible to transform yourself with the power of running. You may learn that you can endure more than you think, and that there's no other therapy quite like pavement beneath your feet.

Depression Hates a Moving Target is a witty and poignant story of rediscovery. Whether you're born to run or just looking for rebirth, you will:

  • Be inspired by the powerful story of one woman-and her dog.
  • Cheer on Nita as she endures the challenges of a marathon and a mind in turmoil.
  • And discover the power of running to overcome obstacles.

Inspiring story, unfortunate narration

I wish the author had narrated her own story. The narration took away from my enjoyment of the book and I had to remind myself often it wasn’t the author’s voice or emphasis as it was grating and off-putting.
The story is repetitive and overly detailed at times but overall enjoyable if you like running and also appreciate the mental health benefits. Nina is an inspiration and chronicles her path from non-runner to marathoner in a way that makes it within reach for anyone.

Worth a read if you want inspiration

Like others, the narrator took getting used to and I never really did. However, though it took a bit to get into it the book, I’m glad I stuck with it. This book is about mental illness first and running second. If you fail to connect her mental illnesses with the purpose she runs, you’ll miss the point of the book and find it to be less than stellar. For those with mental illness (depending on the type) - past or present - you’ll appreciate her struggles more, her tenacity more and her sheer determination more. Thank you, Nita.

Inspiring, engaging, relatable and frank

The author does a beautiful job of weaving story, context, inner voice and mental health, subjective and objective experiences, determination and successes. The story is frankly inspiring. I cheered, wept, laughed, and found new determination for my own goals. I heartily recommend this book.

Not What I Expected

Although difficult to sometimes hear about the lows and struggles of depression, the perseverance of the character was inspiring. The narration made it a little difficult to get into but overall the story was good.

Great story for runners with mental illness

I loved this book. I could relate to so many stories around depression and running and their effects on my life and how I look at life. The narrator is a bit robotic but I got used to it and enjoyed the story. I don't think you would enjoy this book unless you had a personal connection to the healing power of running and mental health - but if you do, it is a great read.

Doesn’t really provide guidance

Felt like more of a dictation of what she did rather than why and how it impacted her. I was hoping to hear more about specifically how to address depression with running, but she rather just proclaims this is what it did.
Also found the performer a bit annoying.
