Drew has finally got it all together. First, there is his pocket dimension, a quickly growing area based around his good buddy, Tree. Then there are his students, six random kids he...liberated. Finally, there is the dragon stalking him. Cultivating, sailing, staying ahead of trouble. That’s his plan as he moves into the creation of his solid Core. Seducing a dragon was a total accident. Histoire
The citizens of Azurvale are starting to feel the pressure. War with the Empire to the south is imminent, and there's talk of the city's adventurers being drafted into the campaign. Though this conflict seems inevitable and promises to be horrific, the common folk can do little but act like there's nothing wrong. Rather than lose sleep over something so wildly out of their control, they instead worry about tiny, personal, inconsequential issues. However, the people of Azurvale have yet to find out that their capital is already under threat.

Ryker only had one goal in his life right now: turn a certain adventuring guild into a flaming wreck while dancing merrily through the smoldering ruins. All for the chance to get back at a handful of people. It didn’t work out that way though. At all. He’d died, been forced into the body of an avatar, absconded with the queen as her castle fell to betrayal, kidnapped a little kid who is obviously more than he seems, and to top all that off, he killed his undead father. The smoldering ruins of the queendom have cooled, and Ryker has a task that is more than likely too much for him.

it was a struggle <br />
I had High Hopes considering, the reviews were all really good for this book and I'm usually a big fantasy genre buff. This book was just not for me. I felt it was a Elementary and the narration was extremely annoying! Bordering on super corny.

Painful to listen to
I really wanted to like this book.
It has a fun concept and suprsingly good writing overall but the author made some really annoying choices that made this book unbearable.
1st off there is a difference between a strong female protagonist and someone just writing a leading female role as a bitxh. The secondary lead female in this book is annoyingly bitxhy and rather unlikable. The main protagonist character is not much better and is written as if a child wrote her out. Completely with white colonizer privilege and complete disrespect to local customs and cultures because "she knows better". It comes back to haunt her but it really should be addressed that this concept of thinking is flawed and almost dangerous to give to YA readers as it gives the notion that you can change people into the way you want them. Even if they are abusive and violent, you just got to try harder.
Add in the lack of any exposition and this book become painful! It's 40+ hours long, which I would love, but so much of it feel like filler that didn't need to be there.
The narration is great so I give full credit to reader.

Couldn't finish.
The narrator does a good job but the story itself was a slog. The characters constantly just brood and whine mentally to the point of it being painful to listen to. Even when things do happen it's nothing spectacular and their decisions have zero common sence. Was really looking forward to a story actually about a girl running a fantasy Inn but that hasn't really happened 14hours in.

Broken plot and weak main characters
So first off I just want to say despite not really enjoying this book from the beginning I did listen to the entire book.
The reason for me disliking the book truly was the fact that the mc are whiny and frankly it wants to be a slice of life book but it is not even true to the genre. The emotional monologs the author feels the need to add every 4 hours of book tone gets so dry to the point where after the first quarter of the book I can no longer even care about them.
As other reviewers have pointed out the grammer and constant hashing of the different ways things have happened makes this book about 4 times longer than needed.
There are great moments in the book but truly these are mostly made good by the narrator not the story. The narrator has an amazing range of voices that truly shine in this book.
Frankly the book just falls way too short and I feel that many of these 5 stars have been paid for...

A truly great book!
This was the story that convinced me to open a patron account! It’s a huge, beautiful, unique world. The characters and side characters feel real and fleshed out. There are classes and hidden abilities. The writing is clear and polished. The voice actor chosen is excellent! Don’t sleep on this title

Great book with an irritating style
I enjoy the world and the characters. The world is rich and has a lot of depth but not overwhelming. The main characters are both relatable and frustrating with their flaws.
I enjoy the story it feels natural - and unforced. Even the combat description is very well done.
The reader does a great job and captures the characters very well I think.
THE AUTHOR NEEDS A THESAURUS. EVERY TIME I HEAR THE INCREDULOUS OR WINCE, I... Well I wince - incredulously. How about skeptical or curious or even shocked? How about flinched, stood taken a back, recoiled, shuddered, cringed, wavered or trembled? And the sentence "IT HURT." pops up so much. It's direct and very guttural, but it's very overused in the book. And sometimes saying something directly once followed by a rich & elogant description of the situation (or vice versa) means a lot more than the visceral summation over and over. ENGAGE ME! Because of these irritating habits I cannot give it 5 stars.
Very nice book.

amazing writing but....
the two characters continuously have emotional breakdowns but no real breakthrough. they appear to have emotional breakthroughs and then they do the exact same thing over and over again I don't understand the writing style from that standpoint. the writer makes you think that they're going to overcome creates a amazing moment and then they don't and this continues to happen throughout the whole book, these are two amazingly strong women that the author continues to make them look weak and vulnerable all the time with random outbursts of anger.

Darker Expression of Despair than I normally enjoy.
I wanted a awesomely fulfilling adventure quest. And so my expectations perhaps got in the way of my enjoying this story more. That said overall, I found this writing expressive of mostly dark feelings of the characters combined with long dialogue of a “beat a dead horse” nature at times. The performance was good and the well done accents the most enjoyable aspect of this book for me. I didn’t find myself wandering what was in store for our characters at the end. Just wanting to pet some puppies.
You will enjoy this if you love the dark side of adventure type tales. I need mine a bit less expressive of despair.

Worth it in the end!
The first half of the book was great and annoying off and on, but the author improves steadily making the second half 5 stars. I just finished reading volume 2 on her website and it’s 6 stars with no annoyances! It was so worth getting this far and there is a ton of story already written to keep going.
The characters are so unique and believable. It has LOL comedy, drama, battle, politics, tragedy to some extent, small every day cute stories, and a complex world.
The narrator did a fantastic job as usual!

interesting take on isekai adventure books
It seems like ever since SAO came out, isekai style books, Manga, and anime have been everywhere. Don't get me wrong, I love a "transported to another world" genre, but it starts to get stale after a while.
Not this book though. This follows a girl who is, in all presented aspects, normal. She's not an OP SUPER GOD like the usual isekai fair. She's a lost girl who found an inn, and whoops, she's now an innkeeper in a world of animal-people and magic. I won't go into more detail because I want you to follow her story yourself, it's worth the trip. The characters have depth, emotion, growth, the world is well structured and makes sense, and the progression of the story is never halting, nor does it drag on.
Oh, and there's chess. I'm a sucker for chess. Pirate Aba, if you ever read this and want to play, give me a holler, cus it sounds like you'd be a fun opponent.
I was itching to listen to more and more of this book, and when it ended (about 1 minute ago from the time of writing this) I was actually pretty upset it was over. 43 hours over the course of about a week, and I want more, more, MORE. In fact, as soon as this review is done, I'm off to start reading Volume 2, so I'm now in a hurry.
Andrea Parsenau is, as usual, a wonderful narrator. She is among the small list of people who's narrations I will listen to, even if the book they're narrating seems strange, simply because their work is that good.
Give this book a listen, even if you're tired of isekai adventures. I promise you won't regret it.

A Truly Wandering Story
I do not typically write good reviews. It is easy to write bad ones criticizing the book and pointing out major plot holes. I don't remember the last positive review I left. I will say that I only starting liking the story about 2 or 3 hours in. Slow burn does not cover it. It starts at a snails pace. Nothing is going on Erin for example does not leave 500 feet from the inn for the first 5ish hours. At one point she rushes past a stream and then right afterwards completely forgets she has done so. But then she plays CHESS. And the music and culture references start coming in.
EVERY character gets so much depth and attention to detail! Anyone of them can die. There would be one happy chapter, followed by a blissful moment and then a full on bass drop exploring the depths of pure HELL. Comical and unimportant moments that led to a catastrophic and very logical outcomes. One simple comment you didn't pay any mind to three seconds ago dumps you into the gutting and then pulls you into the sewer....("I'll keep them from bothering you Erin")
Nothing is typical. Your typical hero wants to be an adventurer, a hero, someone bad-ass and powerful. But what if they just were angry at the world or hated killing. Not just someone who has anger problem or just gets over killing at the start but really truly stays angry and truly does not like violence. There are no characters to fall in love with or be devoted to. No perfection or heroism is demonstrated in this book by the main characters. It's real though, real and dirty.

This.. this is an immortal start.
I have read all my life. loved books, loved characters. felt heartbreak, and been awed by fantastic worlds. I've cheered hundreds of protagonists, hated more than thousands of villains.
The Wayward Inn is right at the forefront. I sit here, feeling. living. churning with so many emotions I can't JUST give a simple review.
I'll preface with the cons though:
some plotholes, mostly minor.
Erin is a little aloof.
Rioka takes getting used to.
depending how you feel about pacing can be a slow burn.
From what I've come to find out about This story though is it's the weakest of the volumes.
Calling this the weakest? I can barely fathom how much better the rest of the series is then.
Every character is a person. the world is realized. Not a single moment is filler and everything matters. Things seem to come out of nowhere only to make sense when you think about it. Moments happen that even if you foresee then you hold your breath for HOURS wondering. This is not a child's book. it's not vulgur or explicit. It is hard though. it's as hard as real life.
Good. Erin and Rioka.. and even the ancillary characters go through LIFE. life in a harsh world. Even the secondary and tertiary characters matter. every thread has points of importance and connect in the massive web that many high fantasy authors can't even make well. Aba is beyond most in their class. something special is in this story. and it's spoke to me. I LIVED and BREATHED this book. I hated this book,
and I loved it because it made me hate it.
I love this book. I truly love it.
And I wish I had the energy to even TOUCH upon Andrea's amazing performance. it's a masterclass. But I'm just wiped. I'm exhausted in the best way possible because I experianced my own immortal moment. one that lasted 43 hours that to me will never fade away even when I'm old and grey. Try this book. return it if you don't like it.. But try this book.

Just Wandered Inn
Loved every second of it! Don't miss this beautiful world and excellent story. It builds slowly but surely into an intense and gripping story of humanity, magic, learning to persevere in an unfamiliar place, until you begin to belong.

A Very Long Listen that is Worth the Time Spent
I can't believe that a 40+ hour listen left me wanting more. For a man of modest patience this is quite unbelievable . The narrator
took some time to get used to, but became perfect as the book developed. I certainly hope there is a Vol 2 audiobook.

Noxious Protagonists
This book might be great if the protagonist were absent. Both girls are volatile, mean-spirited, abusive, incompetent, devoid of any sense of humor, and truly unlikable. Perhaps you're thrilled by the idea of watching spoiled American millennial teenagers displaced into a fantasy world wherein they fritter away the possibility for real intrigue and adventure in exchange for mopey drama and schitzophrenic episodes of inflated self-worth and self-congratulations, mixed with bouts of self-loathing, seasoned with grossly exaggerated remorse for virtuous actions and petulant avoidance of future virtue... well, if that sounds fun this book is for you. Also you had better love the non-word "anyways" because apparently the author and editors think it's just swell... you'll also enjoy "s" added to other words and phrases incorrectly like "looking forwards to...".
In the hundreds of fantasy fiction books I've read, I've never so longed for protagonists to fail or die as in this book. If we could have followed the side characters (residents of the world these girls were thrown into), this might have been a pretty good book... as it is; it's not worth spending a credit on.
