Description

A secret buried in the Antarctic. A puzzle unsolved for thousands of years.

And a Brooklyn-born master gunnery sergeant who's royally pissed that he has to babysit the researchers sent to figure it all out. Patrick "Wic" Finnegan's last op as a Marine Raider before retirement sends him to the frozen Ellsworth Subglacial Highlands. The only reason he's here? He owes a favor to an old friend, but that doesn't mean he has to like it.

When Wic finally sees what the team has uncovered, he can't believe his eyes, nor is he prepared for the violence to come. Soon, the portal opens and unleashes a storm of unbridled fury upon humanity.

From the Antarctic tundra to the streets of Manhattan, Wic and his team will be pushed to their limits as they fight to hold back Earth's ultimate threat. The odds are against them. Governments are toppling. And the Earth is falling into ruin.

Join best-selling authors Christopher Hopper and J.N. Chaney on what audiences call a "nonstop, break-neck thrill ride into metaspace". For fans of District 9, Expeditionary Force, and Galaxy's Edge, this is one military sci-fi thriller you won't be able to put down, and the official beginning to the hit series Ruins of the Galaxy.

Impressively bland

A lot of reviews are talking about similarities to 'Expedition Force', and I get it. This is what you would get if you rewrote Expedition force, only with the jokes replaced with masturbatory naming of every piece of military equipment under the sun. Much more military fiction for gun nuts than scifi. R.C. Bray manages to make it listenable, because the man could read the phone book, but even his wonderful voice acting and general delivery can't breath life into a cast of generic soldier stand ins (that die frequently to keep the main duder oh so ANGRY)… Couple all this with a heaping helping of terribly written political talking points and its down right painful at times. You know you are preaching like an asshole when even people that agree with you are annoyed, and your driving away the rest to de-characterize your damned characters. Stop it. Reads like video game fanfiction written by a team of 4 16 year olds that met on /pol... Might actually be just that. Save your money, check out the 'I am legion I am bob' series or whatever it was called, way better... Unless you really want to hear the exact model number of every weapon fired in a 15 hour action novel, if that gets your bits tingling, enjoy?

Not very original

"For fans of District 9, Expeditionary Force, and Galaxy's Edge." That pretty much sums it up. This book is basically those three stories mashed together and not in a good way. While I like every one of the stories this one is derived from, this book also includes the worst parts of each. For example in Expeditionary Force they never really accomplish anything concrete. The same is true here.

R C Bray is a good narrator but Skippy... uh I mean "Chuck" loses his British accent one paragraph in and it's never heard from again. Don't even get me started on Veronica. BAD stereotype (bordering on racist) sums that up.

Being able to suspend your disbelief is important especially with science fiction. Would these aliens really be caught flat-footed by humans? They've been doing what they do since humans were wearing animal skins. Injuries are just a footnote and mean nothing seconds after they happen no matter how severe.

Bottom line is this is were I get off this silly train. Trained warriors whining about -5°F? What a bunch of wimps. We camp outside at -25.

too much like expeditionary force.

It was nice to see Bishop and Skippy back in action... Whoops, I mean WIC and Charles. I enjoyed this well enough, but the similarities between Expeditionary Force are undeniable.

My Favourite Reader

Seriously, I'd listen to RC Bray read the back of a cereal box. The story was good too of course, but he really does bring anything he reads to life.

hesitant on all 5's

overall this is a solid listen, the story, nothing you could imagine, needs, bureaucrats, and a good old master Sgt that just offers a SHIT TONNE (metric system is the best BTW) of street cred to the protagonist. some similarities to other reads , expeditionary force for example, but with enough differences to make it unique and interesting... I really couldn't put it down

RC does a good job of hammering down John Cleese in the beginning, but looses it a bit, but his characterization and voicing of women has always impressed me.

solid book if your a member of the MBOP, I think you'll like it

Ruined

I was enjoying this book until the Skippy wannabe appeared and the main character turned into an irrational idiot.. This pretty much ruined the look for me after the far too many chapters it took for the main character to finally get a clue.
Even RC Bray couldn't save this as I could honestly listen to him read the phone book, but many of the characters and dialogue were too annoying that even Bray's solid voice acting couldn't fix.

fast paced, interesting story

The story was certainly interesting and I think as a book (electronic or paper) I would have enjoyed it a bit more. The difficulty I had was that while In love RC Bray as a narrator, there is a character in this story that comes of as Extremely similar to a character he narrated in a different story. The plucky AI who banters and finds its humanity is perhaps not a unique idea, but unfortunately, the one in this book, and the other similar character RC narrates in a different series are indistinguishable from one another for me. Book felt a bit rushed but overall was enjoyable.

RC Bray does it again

Absolutely loved it. If you enjoyed expeditionary force you'll like this. RC Bray is spot on with narration per usual.

Give this series a try, it's worth it!

One of the best inanimate characters I have ever listened to is found in this book. Although the story's first half is a bit slow, it picks up pretty fast halfway through with the introduction of this character. You won't regret taking a chance on this first book.
