Description

If our memories make us who we are, who is a man without any? Nameless has only a gun, missions from a shadowy agency, and one dead aim: dispense justice when the law fails. As he moves from town to town, driven by splintered visions of the past and future, he's headed toward the ultimate confrontation in this propulsive series of short thrillers by number one New York Times best-selling author Dean Koontz. With narration by Edoardo Ballerini.

So So

Being a fan on Dean Koontz novels, I never bothered to read reviews of this book before adding it to my library. Once 'into it', I did feel that the pace was not what I have learnt to expect from one of his novels. It is set out more like a bunch of small stories, but with some of the issues transferring to next case. It wasn't until the last one that I was beginning to think I was listening to a plot normally set out by Mr. Koontz.

This was a free 'editor's pick' for the month thus I stuck it out to the end. Had I actually paid for it I would have requested a refund at least before listening to 1/4 of it. If you are new to Dean Koontz writing style, I would suggest you skip by this novel and purchase one of the many others he has out there. A first time listener could be very disappointed and thus decide not to give him another try. Doing so would leave you missing out on some very intense thriller mysteries, with a little of the super natural thrown in. Just one avid listener's opinion, of course!

Finally another decent editor pick

I felt the last few editor picks were not great but this one was alright, never read anything by dean koontz before.

Twisted

I'm not sure I would consider the author to babysit my children. He has a dark and twisted imagination. As short stories go, Nameless will help you pass the time...and have nightmares. If people being evil, and devoid of humanity, is your thing, you will probably enjoy these stories...I, however, will bid farewell to this series.

Fit for an airport gift shop

This was my first time reading (listening to?) Koontz, and I feel kind of let down. Awkward metaphors, clumsy paragraphs, lacklustre story. Not sure if this is a hot take or not, but I don't think Koontz is a very good writer! A competent performance by the narrator, though. At least it was free...

Too Dark to Enjoy

The narration was spectacular and I like the main character quite a bit, but I find the story is simply too dark to really enjoy. Lots of the stories included stuff about kids. And I mean a lot of stuff... dark, violent stuff... involving kids... It really felt like it crossed a line.

solid story with appropriate performances

While I'm not really into murder mysteries and things of that kind, Koontz tends to put an interesting twist on things, keeping me interested. Dark and intriguing, is generally how I describe this and many of his tails.

Seriously?

The idea and story COULD have been great. It started off in that direction BUT.......Nameless (allegedly the good guy) degenerates into someone no better than his adversaries. I'm all for justice and I know that sometimes we have to go outside of the system to achieve it but there's a reason behind the prohibition against cruel and unusual punishment for a reason. If we torture the bad guys because they're so bad, we're just as reprehensible as they are. It should be more of a putting down a rabid dog kind of scenario.

I'm starting to get irritated with the sound of this narrator's voice. Koontz uses him pretty much exclusively so maybe it's just overload and I need to take a break from Koontz to regain perspective. Having said that, it's definitely light years better than the voice of Koontz himself. I've only heard Koontz's voice once but I actually (not even kidding) winced. Poor man. His voice is so awful that one would be forced to conclude that he traded his voice in exchange for literary talent and success......with the devil. I genuinely feel sorry for him because I'm betting he was bullied for it as a child.

I'll probably give the second book a try to see if Nameless gets back to properly representing the side of might and right (after a short break to dampen my irritation with the narrator)but if there's no progress, I'm out.

Impressive Collection of Novellas

Dean Koontz is at his best writing plausible but supernatural scenarios with believable "guy-at-the-end-of-the-bar" dialogue, often uncomfortably visceral descriptions, and suspenseful pacing. This series of shorts (complete with the limitations inherent in the format.. superficial characterization, for example) provides those features in spades. They follow an amnestic psychic (The 'Nameless' Man) sent on missions to punish horribly evil monsters (serial killers, rapists, etc.) living in our midst. He's neither a textbook vigilante nor a superpowered cartoonish character.. but the protagonist is definitely reminiscent of a Frank Castle (Marvel's 'Punisher')/Judge Dredd (DC Comics) figure.
Bottom Line: The story matrix around this justice-driven character is ludicrous, violent, gory, and oddly satisfying. Afficianados of King, Crichton, Hurwitz, or even certain Comicbooks are in for a treat.

There is a reason why Eduardo Ballerini keeps getting cast for Koontz projects: the man has an instinctive understanding of the vocabulary, content, and rhythm of the author's offerings. Ballerini is equally comfortable portraying the joy of playing with a dog and depicting the sick motivations of a sexual sadist. The sound editors at Audible Studios/Amazon Originals are likewise universally successful. This recording sounds great over a car stereo, on the speakers of your device, or with earbuds.

This 9.5/10 star audiobook is well worth your Credit. Those who took advantage of reading it when it was offered for free as an 'Editor's Pick' found a genuine gem. Do Not hesitate to download this one.

[I had downloaded 'Season Two' by the time the second of the six Novellas was done. I am curious as to where Koontz can take this intriguing character with a mysterious past.]

Riveting couldn't stop listening

I'm normally a Sci-fi fan, this story really surprised. I couldn't stop listening. I'm a new Dean Koontz fan, I will be trying more of his novels.
