Description

Number one New York Times best seller

An Amazon Best Book of the Year

There's no such thing as safe in a city at war, a city overrun with monsters. In this dark urban fantasy from acclaimed author Victoria Schwab, a young woman and a young man must choose whether to become heroes or villains - and friends or enemies - with the future of their home at stake. The first of two books, This Savage Song is a must-have for fans of Holly Black, Maggie Stiefvater, and Laini Taylor.

Kate Harker and August Flynn are the heirs to a divided city - a city where the violence has begun to breed actual monsters. All Kate wants is to be as ruthless as her father, who lets the monsters roam free and makes the humans pay for his protection. All August wants is to be human, as good-hearted as his own father, to play a bigger role in protecting the innocent - but he's one of the monsters. One who can steal a soul with a simple strain of music.

When the chance arises to keep an eye on Kate, who's just been kicked out of her sixth boarding school and returned home, August jumps at it. But Kate discovers August's secret, and after a failed assassination attempt the pair must flee for their lives.

In This Savage Song, Victoria Schwab creates a gritty, seething metropolis, one worthy of being compared to Gotham and to the four versions of London in her critically acclaimed fantasy for adults, A Darker Shade of Magic. Her heroes will face monsters intent on destroying them from every side - including the monsters within.

Going to start book 2 right away!

Not gunna lie, I totally have switched and started listening to some books on audible. So I have more time to listen then I would to sit and read. So I used my free credit to download this audio book. AND wow! This really was the YA fiction fix I needed in 2018! Loved it! I’m really sad to see that this series ends at book 2. BUT. I’m thinking about buying the next book for $26 instead of waiting 13 more days for my next free credit on audible! lol Ahh.
Also! Therese is an excellent narrator! Very good as changing voices for different character types! Soothing!

Good Story, Annoying Narration

It's frustrating to endure this particular sort of repetitive cadence in voice in order to follow an interesting storyline. Difficult to believe that it's possible to read for that many hours ending every single sentence with a desperate whispered gasp...

Enjoyed, wanted a little more though

I quite enjoyed this and will definitely listen to the next one. Wish there was a little more detail around the monsters in the book, but overall I loved the story developed between Kate and August. Excited to see how it ends.

Held My Attention

While this book held my attention in audio format, some of the writing was repetitive and I know I would have struggled to read it in print as a result. Overall I enjoyed it, but it definitely could have used some editing to reduce repetitive phrases.

Not my favourite but worth reading

This was my first experience with Schwab's writing. This book comes so highly recommended so I wanted to read it. I was told it was beautifully dark and had major character development that made the reader feel invested in the characters. If I'm being honest I kept expecting to fall in love with the characters but I ended up finishing the book and was underwhelmed. This was definitely not my favourite book and as a result, I gave the story a 3 star. I personally, found that there was little character development through the entire book and by the end I didn't sympathize for the characters. With that being said it is a very cool and unique world that Schwab has created. The idea of monsters manifesting from evil acts created an intriguing story. With that being said by the end of the book I did not find myself overly invested in the plot of the story. I wasn't really shocked by anything that happened and I found it to be a slow read for me. I found Plummer's narration entertaining, however, not mind-blowing.

With all this being said I heard that the ending to the duolagy was so incredible that I decided to pick up the second book (Our Dark Duet). I enjoyed Our Dark Duet significantly more and I actually found that the character development that I felt was lacking from this savage song was delivered beautifully in the second book. I also found that the second book's plot was a lot more complex and intriguing. Therefore, I would describe the first book as Worldbuilding, info-dumping and setting the scene for the second book.

With all this being said, I would recommend reading This Savage Song in order to set the scene for Our Dark Duet. I would say that it is worth reading this series for the second book. It is an interesting and Dark world that Schwab manages to create. Going forward because of Our Dark Duet I will pick up another book by this author.
