Description

Deep in the African rain forest, near the legendary ruins of the Lost City of Zinj, an expedition of eight American geologists are mysteriously and brutally killed in a matter of minutes.

Ten thousand miles away, Karen Ross, the Congo Project Supervisor, watches a gruesome video transmission of the aftermath: a camp destroyed, tents crushed and torn, equipment scattered in the mud alongside dead bodies - all motionless except for one moving image - a grainy, dark, man-shaped blur.

In San Francisco, primatologist Peter Elliot works with Amy, a gorilla with an extraordinary vocabulary of 620 "signs," the most ever learned by a primate, and she likes to finger paint. But recently her behavior has been erratic and her drawings match, with stunning accuracy, the brittle pages of a Portuguese print dating back to 1642…a drawing of an ancient lost city. A new expedition - along with Amy - is sent into the Congo, where they enter a secret world, and the only way out may be through a horrifying death.....

Congo was adapted to the screen and directed by Frank Marshall.

Boring

The writer just drowns on and on. Although the reader is quite excellent, she couldn't save this one.

Not worth the 10+ hours

The story is simplistic and not particularly engaging. It is filled out with monotonous historical and biodiversity lessons. The characters are superficial. The narrator fair, although I had difficulty differentiating between her characters/voices.
Not recommended, unfortunately.

Dated but entertainjng

Congo by Michael Crichton

Is interesting.

The thing is though, it’s not specifically as scary or heart racing as Jurassic Park and the technology information is so very very VERY dated. I’m curious if in 1980 when this book came out if half of the appeal was the interesting technology. But all of the talk of what computers can do, programs, and satellites, was at a point laughable knowing just how much I could do on my phone.

There is a scene where they talk about snipping and editing and looping a voice recording and it has them taking hours. We can easily do that on our phones in 10 second maybe a minute.

The joyous thing about Crichton's writing is that they mix real life quotes, and information with fictitious timeline and story. So we have Amy and Elitot in the same universe as Jane Goodall. You may end up looking up, did certain things happen. Was there a rush on blue diamonds, are there other types of gorillas? It’s all so plausible giving companies with banks of money and human’s Hubris.

I did not enjoy the dated language. It’s very “man this” when they meant humans, and the terms used for certain people(s) made me question if it was “of its time” or truly in need of a revision. The characters themselves were great if a bit stereotypical but the epilogue just dropped everything like end of report here’s what the others did.

This book is for anyone that enjoys popular & reality based sci-fi with a focus on animals. If you are interested in mysteries, history, or gorillas; and if you like Crichton’s easy writing style and interesting delivery. It is certainly a very filmable book, almost written like current reality tv shows with commentary post scene interjected through outs

Lost me in the third act

Excellent narration, but the voicing of Monroe's speech is distracting. Loved the voicing of Amy. The plot was really engaging but the third act makes a lot of it feel a bit pointless, doesn't deliver much punch for all the buildup. Lots of mystery that leads nowhere. Could have done so much more with the antagonists. Sort of reminds me of the disappointing wacko ending of Journey to the Centre of the Earth.

Worth a listen if you have nothing else on your list! I enjoyed.

Surprisingly the movie was better

It took me two attempts to push through this book. It could have been edited down to half of the length. Probably why it made a better movie than novel.

yup, it's a Michael Crichton classic

A fast paced adventure, 1/2 2d characters 1/2 technical info dumps. Yum! If you liked his other stuff, you'll like this Golden Oldie.

Gripping

Any book by Michael Crichton commands my attention. Having read several of the reviews I nearly did not get Congo. However the Sample I heard intrigued me enough to ignore the reviews and get the book. Thank goodness. The way each major element was unfolded provided a context for the unfolding story. The geopolitical situation of the Congo, the historical background, the science, technology and geology were mesmerizing. The story was a rich blend of adventure and learning. If I was disappointed in anything, it was the abrupt ending although I liked knowing how the main characters ended up. I'd highly recommend this book for anyone who loves to learn as well as be entertained, possibly with the emphasis on learning.

Fun story

A fun story with interesting characters. Lots of excitement and suspense. Performance was good, characters were easily distinguishable without being over the top.

One of Crichton's better books

This is one of Crichton's better books, with an excellent performance. It is slow to start and there are some technical details that seem absurd, like a satellite uplink where bandwidth is very scarce, so they communicate in a stuttering, broken phrases, but then they send pictures and audio which immediately are received.

Still, an enjoyable read.

Not bad, not great

I enjoyed it. Maybe a little too much history lessons for me. The story itself was exciting and interesting though.
