Pathological mind games. Covert and overt put-downs. Triangulation. Gaslighting. Projection. These are the manipulative tactics survivors of malignant narcissists are unfortunately all too familiar with. As victims of silent crimes where the perpetrators are rarely held accountable, survivors of narcissistic abuse have lived in a war zone of epic proportions, enduring an abuse cycle of love-bombing and devaluation - psychological violence on steroids.

Although clinical research has been conducted on narcissism as a disorder, less is known about its effects on victims who are in toxic relationships with partners with Narcissistic Personality Disorder. Individuals with this disorder engage in chronic devaluation and manipulation of their partners, a psychological and emotional phenomenon known as "narcissistic abuse". Unfortunately, the full extent of what narcissistic abuse entails is not taught in any psychology class or diagnostic manual.

The causes of Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder range from severe neglect to monstrous abuse. Many survivors grew up in houses that were not homes-in families that were as loveless as orphanages and sometimes as dangerous. If you felt unwanted, unliked, rejected, hated, and/or despised for a lengthy portion of your childhood, trauma may be deeply engrained in your mind, soul, and body. This book is a practical guide to recovering from lingering childhood trauma. It is copiously illustrated with examples of the author's and his clients' journeys of recovering.

The only book you need to understand abuse
This book was recommended to me by members of a group for abused women. It helped me to let go of the hope I was holding on to that my partner would change if I just loved him enough, forgave him enough, gave him just one more chance.

A critical read
A really important book, I highly recommend it to anyone who has experienced abuse, and anyone who works in a professional capacity with people experiencing domestic violence. Explains really clearly the thought patterns of abusers and gives practical advice. Could be triggering to straight men who have experienced abuse though - because the author works with abusers who often claim to have been mistreated as a way to deflect blame, he is hesitant to believe a straight man's claim of being abused by a female partner. I don't think it's a bug as much as a feature, the book is aimed towards helping female victims and explaining the mindset of male perpetrators, with a brief discussion of gay/lesbian couples.

"THE" BOOK about any kind of abuse
There may be many books out there that tackle abuse and/or domestic violence. This one, although written by a (very insightful) man, shows you truths (while explaining root causes) that you can never unsee. Abuse does not have to be physical; it takes many forms, and it is all explained here. Many women keep going back to their abusive partner, only to find things taking a turn for the worse every time, Read this one, and you will never go back. This book has saved the lives of many women and children and I believe is Mr. Bancroft's most known and best-selling book so far. After this, I recommend that you read the "Daily Wisdom..." by the same author, which serves as a voice of reason that you fall back on at any time, on any day.
