Publisher's Summary

They say that the Thorn of Camorr can beat anyone in a fight. They say he steals from the rich and gives to the poor. They say he's part man, part myth, and mostly street-corner rumor. And they are wrong on every count. Only averagely tall, slender, and god-awful with a sword, Locke Lamora is the fabled Thorn, and the greatest weapons at his disposal are his wit and cunning.

He steals from the rich - they're the only ones worth stealing from - but the poor can go steal for themselves. What Locke cons, wheedles and tricks into his possession is strictly for him and his band of fellow con-artists and thieves: the Gentleman Bastards. Together their domain is the city of Camorr. Built of Elderglass by a race no-one remembers, it's a city of shifting revels, filthy canals, baroque palaces, and crowded cemeteries. Home to Dons, merchants, soldiers, beggars, cripples, and feral children. And to Capa Barsavi, the criminal mastermind who runs the city.

Fantastic narrator and voice!

The Oliver twist trope, but beautifully more complex and adulted. My wife was listening at first and said she knew exactly where the story was headed. So many sharp twists and turns. Exactly what I wanted this book to be! Just finished two and three and thought I would come back and give book 1 some love.

Great read

The first section was slower than I would've liked but about 1!3 into the book it picks up as it follows the gentlemen bastards and becomes a great book. Patrick rothfuss says it is one of his top five of all time and I'd put it on my top ten so far. The cussing is very well done, the reader did a phenomenal job and really brought the story to life. Definitely would recommend.

Solid book.

Entertaining and well narrated, with enough intrigue to keep the reader interested. Nothing life changing, but definitely worth a read.

always has been one of my favourites

Since the first time I read the book I have loved it. I have read it three times and now I have listened to the audio. the performance was good, however, I didn't connect to the voices of some characters, particularly Barsavj and the Grey King. other than that, magnificent.

Light-Touch Introduction To A True Scoundrel

This book is basically a mix of 'The Sting', 'The Great Train Robbery', and 'Mission Impossible'.. set in a low-magic, medieval-level-of-development Fantasy reality where ruthless, greedy human factions vie for supremacy & share their world with monstrous venomous sea creatures. 'Locke Lamora' - leader of the elite thieving/grifting 'Gentleman Bastards' - goes in-disguise and under-cover to economically wipe out one of the most powerful families in the ancient city of 'Camorr'. Scott Lynch writes a twisty-turny con, competent law enforcement ("Yellowjackets") serving the Duke, and a credible dangerous threat to the team in the person of Gangster Kingpin "Capa" Barsavi and his henchmen. Lynch's tone is remarkably amusing & lighthearted, his dialogue is clever, his gritty exposition/worldbuilding is impressive, and his action choreography is top-notch.

Less fortuitous is the narration from Michael Page: to be sure, his diction, timbre, and cadence are professional (albeit unspectacular) - and he clearly understands the author's intended tone - but some of his chosen character voices are straight-up cartoonish. Altogether, the performance is best described as "adequate".

In toto, 'The Lies Of Locke Lamora' rates 8.5 stars out of 10. This entertaining audiobook is easily worth a Credit for Fantasy fans looking for a great way to spend a few quiet afternoons.

Beautifully Written Novel

So vividly colorful, descriptive story and very well narrated. You will find yourself so captivated, as if you are a citizen of  Camorr witnessing the deceptive lies of Locke Lamora and the "Gentlemen Bastards". I highly recommend this book.

The Greatest Narration I've Ever Heard

The narrator (Michael Page) brings this book to life with his many voices. This was less an audiobook and more of a play, where the characters bring their vivid performances to the center stage of your mind. There were menu points where I had trouble pressing pause because I was dying to know what came next.

A slow burn but well worth the wait

For anyone who likes fantasy this is a must read. It takes a couple chapter to get into and the story seems somewhat disjointed but man oh man it all comes together as you read on and everything just works so well. Beautiful story
