Description

Detective D. D. Warren has four days to stop a killer in this “shocking…‘must read’”* from #1 New York Times bestselling author Lisa Gardner—one of Library Journal's Best Thrillers of the Year.

Charlene Grant believes she is going to die. For the past few years, her childhood friends have been murdered one by one. Same day. Same time. Now she’s the last of her friends alive, and she’s counting down the final four days of her life until January 21st.

Charlene doesn’t plan on going down without a fight. She has taken up boxing, shooting, and running. She also wants Boston’s top homicide detective, D. D. Warren, to handle the investigation.

But as D. D. delves deeper into the case, she starts to question the woman’s story. Instinct tells her that Charlene may not be in any danger at all. If that’s true, the woman must have a secret—one so terrifying that it alone could be the greatest threat of all.

fantastic

Yet another fantastic novel by Lisa Gardner and her series with Detective D.D. Warren.
Being a big fan of Lisa Gardner since her first book came out, I am not surprised on how good this book is

Suspenseful

Lisa Gardner does not disappoint. Very happy with Kirsten Potter's narration as well. I will continue to follow this author as well as the narrator.

Occasionally Awkward Characterization..

..but otherwise outstanding. The plotting in this captivating Lisa Gardner Mystery-Thriller is among the author's best. The twists and turns are "out-of-left-field" unpredictable (and require a modicum of disbelief suspension) - but just plausible enough to titillate rather than dismay. False leads, Red Herrings, and "you think you figured it out.. but you really didn't" investigative threads abound in this tale. Gardner fans will also recognize her signature jaded/confrontational investigators and uncomfortably vivid description (that explains why they are that way). The scripting of a pedophile grooming & assaulting an innocent/naïve child is particularly graphic & disturbing.
Less fortunately, the transitions between Detective-Sergeant D.D.Warren's personal life (mothering a colicky 10-month-old & hosting judgemental parents) and the crimes & their investigation are strikingly stark. This book often feels like two 100% disconnected narratives (it's like there are TWO stories masquerading as a single tale).

As to narration: Kirsten Potter's reading of the book is typically unsurpassed - although she struggles with the shifts in Perspective in the text (from 3rd-person Omniscient following Detective Warren to 1st-person Limited with the 21-year-old suspect/subject 'Charlene Grant' to 3rd-person Omniscient limited to the POV of 7-year-old pedo target/victim 'Jesse' and back again). They all sound similar enough to make the audiobook a bit of a challenge to follow at times.

Altogether, the deficiencies in this book are pretty easily dismissed: 'Catch Me' rates 9 stars out of 10. This sixth entry in the 'Warren/Dane' series is imperfect.. but definitely belongs in your Mystery library.

Note: Potter's persistent pronunciation of the SIG Sauer brand of semiautomatic pistol as a "Sigsawyer" is fingernails-on-chalkboard horrifying
