Audie Award Nominee, Classic, 2013
Because of the widespread awareness of the story of the evil Transylvanian count and the success of numerous film adaptations that have been created over the years, the modern audience hasn't had a chance to truly appreciate the unknowing dread that readers would have felt when reading Bram Stoker's original 1897 manuscript. Most modern productions employ campiness or sound effects to try to bring back that gothic tension, but we've tried something different. By returning to Stoker's original storytelling structure - a series of letters and journal entries voiced by Jonathan Harker, Dr. Van Helsing, and other characters - with an all-star cast of narrators, we've sought to recapture its originally intended horror and power.
This production of Dracula is presented by what is possibly the best assemblage of narrating talent ever for one audiobook: Emmy Award nominees Alan Cumming and Tim Curry plus an all-star cast of Audie award-winners Simon Vance (The Millenium Trilogy), Katherine Kellgren (Pride and Prejudice and Zombies), Susan Duerden (The Tiger’s Wife), John Lee (Supergods) and customer favorites Graeme Malcolm (Skippy Dies), Steven Crossley (The Oxford Time Travel series), Simon Prebble (The Baroque Cycle), James Adams (Letters to a Young Contrarian), Nicola Barber (The Rose Garden), Victor Villar-Hauser (Fun Inc.), and Marc Vietor (1Q84). These stellar narrators have been cast as follows:
Alan Cumming as Dr. Seward
Simon Vance as Jonathan Harker
Katy Kellgren as Mina Murray/Harker
Susan Duerden as Lucy Westenra
Tim Curry as Van Helsing
Graeme Malcolm as Dailygraph correspondent
Steven Crossley as Zookeeper’s account and reporter
Simon Prebble as Varna
James Adams as Patrick Hennessey
Nicola Barber as Sister Agatha
Victor Villar-Hauser as Arthur Holmwood
Marc Vietor as Quincey Morris
John Lee as Introductory paragraph, various letters

Narration is hit and miss
I love this book. It’s a timeless story that sparks the imagination of readers (and listeners). I was excited to listen to this version because of the full cast of voice actors. The actors they chose are excellent, adding emotion and passion to the story.
However, I am very disappointed in how they used the voice actors. The book is a collection of letters, diary entries, newspaper articles, etc. They chose only to have unique actors for the authors of said writings. So, for example, there is no voice actor for Dracula because of course Dracula never wrote anything himself. When Dracula speaks its one of the other actors speaking in an attempted Transylvanian accent. Very annoying. It’s gets even more annoying when one voice actor imitates the voice of another actor. For example, when Mina is quoting Van Helsing, the female voice actor speaks in an attempted deep Dutch accent. What the hell? Why would they not use the Van Helsing actor? By the end of the book I was thoroughly annoyed by this. Thankfully the story is good enough to get through it.

Difficult to follow
I listen to many audio books. This one is not a traditional novel. I found this book difficult to follow. Did not like it at all . With all the different voices , it was like watching TV with only the sound, without the picture.

Classic literature done very well.
Enjoyable start to finish, this version retained the classic charm of Dracula through and through.

9/10th's of an awesome story!
In short, the journey of listening is well worth it, but couldn't help feeling that the conclusion didn't hold up to everything that got it there. No doubt that is because all the takes on Dracula that modern readers have absorbed since the original telling. To discover this for yourself is still a worthy task and thus a recommended read! Get your minds (and your stakes) sharp for this one!

A classic still.
Still never truly adapted faithfully in visual form. Which is really too bad as there is a wealth of material to make a wonderfully dark series. Though this is the next best thing.
This truly is in a class by itself in terms of drama (and melodrama) horror, myth and archaic language. The full cast greatly makes it easier to follow as each journal entry has its own voice and cadence and draws you in clearly. The performances were superior to every adaption I have ever heard. Bravo!

overall it was enjoyable
overall quite enjoyable, just got annoyed with men doing some of the female voices, when there was already female narration.

Dracula is one of my favourite books, and this recording really does do it justice. The voice actors are wonderful. I recommend it most highly!

Brilliant!
Because of misconceptions I have avoided it for too long. When I discovered (recently) that it was written in epistolary format, it immediately changed my mind (the same thing happened with me about Frankenstein, which was my last book of 2022, closing the year with 5 stunning stars).
Yes, I love books written in epistolary style.
And here, Bram Stoker did not disappoint me. He masterfully worked around the diary entries, letters and articles, finding the perfect way to balance the story and all main characters.
You do have to take into consideration the time that this book was written (Victorian era).
This book was originally published on May 26, 1897.
How I wished that I could have seen the readers reaction or the first reviews at that time. I know that it was the subject of much controversy upon its publication.
I asked the same question after reading Carmilla, by Sheridan Le Fanu, which was written 27 years before Dracula.
I have said in my reading updates (Goodreads) that I love reading a book without having any expectations about it.
And this one was a terrific surprise.
I loved the writing and the structure.
There are some sensual scenes (or at least I found it sensual) that made me want to scream “yes, take me!”.
I was surprised that this book was free of gory or even scary details.
Still, the atmosphere created by the author was simply awesome.
I do recommend the audiobook narrated by Alan Cumming, Tim Curry, Simon Vance, Katherine Kellgren, Susan Duerden, John Lee, Graeme Malcolm, Steven Crossley, which I listened as I read the book.
Paperback (Penguin Classics), revised edition: 512 pages
E-book (Kobo): 711 pages (default), 193k words (by Penguin Classics, revised edition)
There are lots of free different editions of the e-book that you can download from your favourite retailer. When it comes to classics I prefer Penguin or Oxford

Good book, interesting structure!
This is a good book! I've known of it long ago but never heard much in particular said about it as a book, other than it being the original vampire novel. But it's an interesting book with an interesting epistolary plot structure! A solid read (listen).
