Publisher's Summary

Late one night Beryl Madison turns off her burglar alarm, puts down her gun and opens her door to the man who has stalked and terrorized her for months. Hours later, her brutally mutilated body lies in the city morgue. As Scarpetta begins searching for the microscopic clues to the killer’s identity, one question keeps nagging her: why did Beryl let him in?

great story

I enjoyed this book I didn't like the man's voice being done by a woman I really liked going back to when there was no computers and looking for phones and how we did things before we got this information age

Too much back ground noise

I love reading Patricia Cornwell’s books, great character development and easy reads that pull you into thinking ahead of the mystery to try to figure it out. Keeps you thinking.

However this was my first time listening to one of her books. There was annoying background noise all the way through the book. It sounded like people taking! I listen to books on long walks or runs and I found myself stopping and looking behind myself thinking that people were behind me….. very distracting and annoying. Very hard to ignore. Unfortunately I could not enjoy this book as I normally enjoy her books.

I read other reviews and some also mentioned this. I thought I would be able to ignore it, but unfortunately study you truly cannot.

Enjoyed this! Glad characters are in follow up books

Enjoyed this second book in the series.
I read other reviews that pointed out the datedness of the book. I’ll say what I noticed most about how this was a bit dated was the smoking… they’re smoking everywhere! As well the ‘newness’ of homosexuality, a little bristly at times, recognizing how far we’ve come, in my world anyway. I’m in my sixties so the subject and how it’s treated isn’t shocking to me; sort of interesting to contemplate then and now.

A solid read but keep in mind the date it was written

Loving this series but the cringe and shock I feel at times from the outdated language used (especially regarding the LGBTQ+ community) was intense. So a trigger warning of sorts for anyone picking up this series. That and the constant smoking.

Another great Kay Scarpetta read

Glad I was able to pick this one up in the Audible Plus section. Great story and I really enjoyed the narrator’s readings - especially Pete Morello!

Heavy breatthing

You should NOT be able to hear a reader breath. It's part pf the art. Ms. Critt, however, takes n a lungful of air at every pause and you can hear each one. Honestly? I just stopped listening.
