Histoire
In Geisha, a Life, Mineko Iwasaki tells her story, from her warm early childhood, to her intense yet privileged upbringing in the Iwasaki okiya (household), to her years as a renowned geisha, and finally, to her decision at the age of 29 to retire and marry, a move that would mirror the demise of geisha culture. Mineko brings to life the beauty and wonder of Gion Kobu, a place that "existed in a world apart, a special realm whose mission and identity depended on preserving the time-honored traditions of the past."

Why we think it’s a great listen: There’s no gentle way to put this – Frank McCourt’s performance of Angela’s Ashes is just better than the Pulitzer Prize-winning book. Frank McCourt shares his sometimes heartwarming, sometimes heartbreaking story of growing up poor, Irish, and Catholic in the Pulitzer Prize-winning memoir Angela's Ashes.

Description
It is a unique and triumphant work of fiction - at once romantic, erotic, suspenseful - and completely unforgettable.
Ce que les critiques en disent
"Astonishing...Breathtaking...You are seduced completely." (Washington Post Book World)
"...a bravura performance, a first novel that provides a vivid view into a largely lost and secret world." (The Los Angeles Times Sunday Book Review)

Powerful
Great audiobook, very touching, as a man, I surprised myself by how much I ended up involved in the story of this girl. The voice of the reader might be a break for some, but I must say that you do get use to it and that I couldn’t imagine the whole experience without her performance, she did an outstanding job.

An incredible story, narrator not ideal.
Memoirs of a Geisha was a mesmerizing read, with stories rich in description and an authors voice that was both unique and telling. Unfortunately, the narrator chosen for this audiobook was monotone - basically more robotic than fluid. It was difficult to remain interested when the novel itself was captivating. #Audible1
I was able to finish the audiobook, but unfortunately I was disappointed in the overall performance.

Long and tepid
This book was so promising and kept me engaged for a while. Unfortunately it didn't leave up to its hype and by the time I reached the end, the story felt too stretched and hard to believe.
I enjoyed the detailed description of the geisha lifestyle and the Japanese society. The first half was definitely my favorite as it revolves around young Chiyo and her many trials and tribulations on the road to ascension. But please explain to me why, when she finally gets her breakthrough, the story suddenly morphs into a teenage romance with its fill of drama and backstabbing. I wish the author would have spent a little more time explaining what it is that made Sayuri (Chiyo's Geisha name) one of the greatest Geishas of her generation.
In the end, the book felt shallow and unfulfilling.

One of my favourite books!
I’ve read this book multiple times but listening to it was an extra pleasure. There is absolutely nothing I would change. It is such fine quality literature and the story is captivating. The movie is good too, but the book is worlds beyond.
