Description

College student Joe Talbert has the modest goal of completing a writing assignment for an English class. His task is to interview a stranger and write a brief biography of the person. With deadlines looming, Joe heads to a nearby nursing home to find a willing subject. There he meets Carl Iverson, and soon nothing in Joe's life is ever the same. Carl is a dying Vietnam veteran-and a convicted murderer. With only a few months to live, he has been medically paroled to a nursing home after spending thirty years in prison for the crimes of rape and murder.

As Joe writes about Carl's life, especially Carl's valor in Vietnam, he cannot reconcile the heroism of the soldier with the despicable acts of the convict. Aided by his skeptical neighbor, Lila, Joe throws himself into uncovering the truth. Thread by thread, he begins to unravel the tapestry of Carl's conviction. But as he and Lila dig deeper into the circumstances of the crime, the stakes grow higher. Will Joe discover the truth before it's too late to escape the fallout?

fantastic

This book is awesome. The writing is so well done and the actual story is amazing. a gripping story that keeps you in the edge of your seat and waiting to see what happens next. Perfect book length as well. Every page is used to its fullest and there's no nonsense writing.

Beautifully written & compelling

This novel is an excellent cross between a thriller/slueth narrative and literary fiction in the form of a propulsive domestic thriller that doubles as a metaphor for family trauma. It was also perfectly narrated. Highly recommend!

Just a well told story

Entertaining. Not a “page turner” necessarily, but it’s not that kind of story. It was fun hearing the plot spool out twist by twist. Definitely kept my interest until the end. Looking for more by this author.

Enjoyed this.

My my new favourite author!

This was the first book that I have read by the author, and I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed it. The characters, the plot, the narrator, and the ending were all wonderful. I almost didn’t want the story to end so onto book 2!

loveable characters

I loved the characters and character development.
the storyline was easy to follow, but still complex enough to keep you guessing. Touches on sensitive topics well.
