Description

According to researchers, the vast majority - a whopping 75-98 percent - of the illnesses that plague us today are a direct result of our thought life. What we think about truly affects us both physically and emotionally. In fact, fear alone triggers more than 1,400 known physical and chemical responses in our bodies, activating more than 30 different hormones! Today our culture is undergoing an epidemic of toxic thoughts that, left unchecked, create ideal conditions for illnesses.

Supported by current scientific and medical research, Dr. Caroline Leaf gives listeners a prescription for better health and wholeness through correct thinking patterns, declaring that we are not victims of our biology. She shares with listeners the "switch" in our brains that enables us to live happier, healthier, more enjoyable lives where we achieve our goals, maintain our weight, and even become more intelligent. She shows us how to choose life, get our minds under control, and reap the benefits of a detoxed thought life.

Review

This book is so good and listening to Dr Leaf break down the concepts so well was what motivated me to get the book. However, I was really disappointed with the audio version. The narrator did not do this book justice. She read in a monotonous robotic tone for the entire time. This made it difficult for me to follow. I bought the kindle version and decided to read it myself..made a huge difference!

Interesting topic

Neuroplasticity is indeed a very interesting topic. This book rather discussed the idea and paved the foundation of neuroplasticity as a common knowledge. Shortly the read started feeling like a tv advertisements for 21 day detox plan, which essentially is a simple five step meditation principles. I did not find references to bible quite intuitive rather a discrete pointer to out of context scripture. Good read if you have time to read and understand those cited scriptures in a deep and mindful effort. In totality I found rather surprisingly self marketing content instead of purposefully structured material.

misleading summary

The summary of this book does not mention that it is a Christian text. This is very misleading. I would never have purchased this book if the summary had been accurate. There were 2 or 3 bible quotes in the first 5 minutes.

Not for me

Narrator was robotic and unemotional. Excessive citation of biblical quotes was tiring within the first ten minutes. I found the main point, that how and what we think about impacts our emotional, physical, and mental health was lost in the repetition of apparent scientific and biblical justifications for these ideas. Might be helpful to some people but the combination of narrator and presentation style lost me.

Science and religious laden

I simply could not relate to this book. The book reads more like an anatomy and physiology of the brain, interspersed with far too many quotes from the Bible. I found it extremely repetitive chapter after chapter both on the science side and on the references to the Bible. While I have no problem making the linkages and quite enjoyed that, the repetitiveness and failure to get to the point were frustrating for me. I even skipped a few chapters to try to get to the 21 day program she talked about with five points To switch on the brainand I was so incredibly frustrated I had to give up. I was very fortunate not to have to pay for this book because if I had, I would have had to return it.

Only for the very religious....not scientific

The author references god and the bible every 2nd sentence. their be some science but it is drowned out. couldn't get past the 1st chapter. the title is very misleading. regret deeply having this book in my library.

Narration is horrible. Sounds robotic

This is a great book. But I wish I would have sampled it first. The narration makes it very hard to listen to and get anything from it. Waste of a credit

Fantastic information! Will buy the book as well.

I know some didn't like the narrator, but I did. I didn't find her voice robotic. I've heard her on fiction stories and she's more emotive there, so she may have wanted to create a less expressive feeling for a scientific book.
I thoroughly enjoyed the fact this neuroscientist uses the Bible to back up her findings. I found the information was packed full, that I should've taken notes in a book. I think this book would be best in a book format over audio so you can highlight important pieces (there were so many) and put notes in there as well. There is so much information that listening to it could become easily forgotten.
I did find some of her comments to be a bit too salesy when she markets her other products... Like " You can see this demonstrated if you buy my dvd..." sort of comments. It would've been better in a format that accompanied a workbook rather than trying to sell the consumer another product for the same book. I also wished she went over examples on how to apply the 21 day detox as it seemed more vague rather than providing practical examples on how to apply this daily... at least it did on the audio.

However, I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in how thinking affects our brain- physically as well as mentally. How we can get into 'ruts' and seem unable to break free from all of that. And how we are not as powerless to deal with these toxic thoughts as we once thought we were. But she does stress it must take a lot of work - practice and dedication to actively change your thinking. And it doesn't happen overnight to become a habit.

I would buy more of her books, just maybe not in audio.

To many God references for me

Good listen. The brain science in this book is up to date with the latest recherche and the proposed 5 step, 21 day detox is also interesting and will try it for sure. BUT there are to many references to scriptures and the bible for me and that’s why it’s not a 5 star. I almost stopped listening in the first chapter because of it but decided to finish and was glad I did !
I believe in a higher power but maybe not exactly as described in the bible.

Author should narrate

The content is amazing, however I wish the narrator sounded more like a friend. After hearing a few of Dr Leafs conferences I think I just expected the same vibe. Normally when read by the Author, though read, it's coming from there heart and has a particular conviction that connects with me.
Blessings

SAMPLE! couldn't get past the voice of the narrator. Credit wasted.

I feel bad for giving this review. My suggestion would be to listen to the sample first...something I didn't do. I'm a fan of Dr. Caroline Leaf's but with this book I don't even know if the content is good because I couldn't get past the narrators voice. Though I'm sure Joyce Bean is a nice person...but for some reason her voice is like nails on a chalk board to me. It doesn't even sound like someone reading me a book...she seems more concerned with how her voice sounds than keeping the vulnerability of the content. I wish I could retuen my credit...oh well. Lesson learned. Always sample the book.

Not good for audio version

What disappointed you about Switch on Your Brain?

I like Leaf's work, but the narrator reads a list of bible verses frequently which makes it impossible to concentrate on the content. When you are reading a physical book, you can just skip over the lists, but when I have the audio running in the background, I don't want to keep running back to skip over every long list of verses. I wish they would take it out for audio version so that there's a flow.

What three words best describe Joyce Bean’s performance?

She sounds irritated and her fast tone of voice makes it seem like she just wants to get through this book as soon as possible. We want to feel relaxed when listening to audiobooks, not rushed. It's worse when she's reading through the long list of bible verses. She seems to be annoyed by it, too. (Which is understandable, because I get annoyed listening to the list.)

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Switch on Your Brain?

The long list of bible verses.

Any additional comments?

It seemed like good book that I would've enjoyed listening to, such a shame.

why is a heading required if it's "optional?"

Sounded like a computer reading text. Horrible. Monotone. The book has merit, but the audio diminishes it.

Amazing Book but narration isn't great

The information in this book is so important that after listening to it I bought a hard back copy and will listen again, making notes and highlights in the printed book. This book really is one to visit again and again. The only negative is the narration. I found it monotone and dry - even though the subject is exciting to me. Still, I'll endure it to hear this book again.

The information, amazing, the voice, can't take it

The information in this book is amazing. I would even say life-changing. I was enjoying the physical copy so much, but I don't have the time to sit for very long and read. So I got the audio version so that I could do my mindless editing and still be able to take it all in. The way that the narrator reads this book makes it almost impossible to follow. She's reading it like a textbook. The way she reads it makes the sentences not make sense. really disappointed, but will have to make time to read the hard copy. This will not work for me. Is there a way to find a different audio version?

Amazing!

I liked that the book explains things from a science-based perspective so even if you're not a "religious" person the content still makes sense based on years of practical application and research. This book was recommended to me by my therapist, and I love it so much I'm going to get the hard copy just so I can take it all in visually.

This book and the online version combined...

This book is a little hard to digest as it is so full of information. But, if you will couple this book with a subscription to Dr. Leafs 21day detox online you will begin to master this whole concept. I write a Christian newsletter and have three of my readers doing the 21 one day process online right now. Every one of them have had profound clarity in areas where they have struggled for years. I have as well. I highly recommend this book.

Encouraging!

What did you learn from Switch on Your Brain that you would use in your daily life?

Always be aware of what you allow to enter your mind. If you have fears or negative thoughts, you can work on "destroying" those thoughts and work on creating better thoughts. I personally love the Bible verses Caroline found, that matched her findings!
I really enjoyed the book and appreciate her sharing her knowledge and experiences.
