Histoire
After the old gods warred and drove themselves to extinction, the cataclysm of their fall shattered the land of Vigrio. Now, power-hungry jarls carve out petty kingdoms, and monsters stalk the shadow-haunted woods and mountains. A world where the bones of the dead gods still hold great power, promising fame, and fortune for those brave - or desperate - enough to seek them out. As whispers of war echo over the plains and across the fjords, fate follows the footsteps of three people. All three will shape the fate of the world, as it once more teeters on the edge of chaos.

Roshar is a world of stone and storms. Uncanny tempests of incredible power sweep across the rocky terrain so frequently that they have shaped ecology and civilization alike. Animals hide in shells, trees pull in branches, and grass retracts into the soilless ground. Cities are built only where the topography offers shelter. It has been centuries since the fall of the 10 consecrated orders known as the Knights Radiant, but their Shardblades and Shardplate remain: mystical swords and suits of armor.

It has been 20 years since the end of the war. The dictatorial Augurs, once thought of almost as gods, were overthrown and wiped out during the conflict, their much-feared powers mysteriously failing them. Those who had ruled under them, men and women with a lesser ability known as the Gift, avoided the Augurs' fate only by submitting themselves to the rebellion's Four Tenets.

I loved this book!!!
Book one in the series was good, but this second book was so awesome! Just very cleverly crafted. There were so many brilliant twists and turns and although the characters had some setbacks, there were moments of triumph too. Many times, I had to focus all my attention on the book because it was so captivating. The author seemed to always be one step ahead of me, when it came to trying to figure out what would happen next.
While reading, I knew this was a book that I would read again, but I felt badly that I would never again get to read it for the first time.
I liked this book even more than the first one; it seemed to flow much nicer. I wasn't a big fan of the heavy use of flashbacks in the first book and this one was much better in that regard.
The reader of the book is also one of the best. He can do many voices amazingly including female characters, which I find is not common. It was clear who was speaking when they were speaking and the voices seemed to match the characters perfectly.
I can't wait to see what is in store for us with book 3.

not near as good as the first
I loved the first book. this book has some serious story flaws. the whole sea bit could have been taken out as it added nothing pivotal to the overall story. it felt like the author didn't know where to go after the first book. the ending felt forced and didn't have near the payoff as the first. great narration though!

A bit slower to start than the first book, but then the new flamboyant characters are introduced, and everything gets crazy, just the way we love it!

1st book was better
I found huge sections of story line just seemed out of place, like he was reaching to make it make sense. 1st book was fantastic and I will give the 3rd a try too but was not very impressed by this one.

A More Than Adequate Follow-up
This book focuses on the misadventures of two remaining Conmen/Thief members of the 'Gentleman Bastards' cabal: the often brilliant-often clueless Locke Lamora and his combat specialist companion Jean Tannen. Scott Lynch puts his erstwhile antiheroes in the midst of a complex scheme to develop naval power through the use of pirates - making great use of their respective skills & giving each of them a love interest. The character development is captivating, the dialogue is often laugh-out-loud clever, and the on-the-seas battle action is pulsepounding.
The book doesn't reach the excellence of Book One of the series - but is undeniably entertaining.
An improved performance from Michael Page doubtless contributes to my favorable impression of the book, too. Page's diction, timbre, cadence, and pacing remain unimpeachable - and his understanding of Lynch's intended tone is as pitch-perfect as it was in 'The Lies Of Locke Lamora' - but his voice-acting is also quite a bit better in this offering.
Altogether, 'Red Seas Under Red Skies' isn't as good as the first book in the 'Gentleman Bastards' series.. but still rates 7.5 stars out of 10. On to Book Three..

Wonderfully unique telling of a swashbuckling thieves tail
Fun and thoroughly enjoyable follow up to a series that is quickly becoming one of my all-time favorites. The language that Scott Lynch has come up with is so delicious, it rolls off the tongue Like thick red wine shared on the balcony overlooking Renaissance Venice with Spanish nobles & the likes.
It’s clever, witty and downright slanderous.
I love it!
And the narration is as good as the greatest stage actors of our time.

I love this series
The first book in the Gentleman Bastards series is exceptional. The character, the setting, the plot.
This one does not let the reader down. By taking these expert thieves and placing them out of there element (on the seas), a whole new set of problems and hurdles get in their way.
Excellent novel!
