Description

The fourth novel in the acclaimed cult-favorite series starring necromancer Johannes Cabal

Horst Cabal has risen from the dead - again.

Horst, the most affable vampire one is ever likely to meet, is resurrected by an occult conspiracy that wants him as a general in a monstrous army. Their plan is to create a country of horrors, a supernatural homeland. As Horst sees the lengths to which they are prepared to go and the evil they cultivate, he realizes that he cannot fight them alone. What he really needs on his side is a sarcastic, amoral, heavily armed necromancer.

As luck would have it, this exactly describes his brother.

Wow

I just gotta say that the narration was phenomenal.
I read the first 3 books of the series and fall in love. Thankful that I can listen to the last two books through Audible.

I can never get enough!

This was wonderful I have to say, it's potentially my favorite in the series with all of the humor I've come to love of the series and all of the semi-horror.
I especially like the way the author ended the story with his notes and epilogues, and it has to be said that the reader (Nicholas Guy Smith) has done an excellent job of bringing the whole varied cast of characters to life.

Fun but annoying, too.

Narrator mostly good, but why Johannes has a German accent (which sounds more Slavic) and Horst sounds like Jason Statham in Snatch makes no sense and is somewhat distracting from the narrative.

Worth 10 stars

Either there needs to be an option for elite authors like Howard to be rated higher than 5 stars or we all should drop our 5 star reviews for other authors to 3. He’s that good.

YESSS!

Book 3, The Fear Institute, was good, but dragged a little. The Brothers Cabal is a true return to form. Hilarious, interesting, no philosophical filler. This time around, Horst Cabal takes center stage and he is hilarious. This is one of the rare books that will have you laughing out loud while listening to your headphones. Jonathan Howard has definitely carved out his own world for his Cabal series, and I can't wait to see what he thinks up next.

Meh ... but gaining steam

The series has been enjoyable but the it's been slow to gain steam. At the very least, Cabal seems to have a proper nemesis now.

Bros Bros Bros

After spending the last three stories with Johannes, Horst Cabal is a breath of fresh air. A genuinely good man who has a nasty affliction, seeing him somewhat-naively navigate the overly-dramatic, grimdark world of monsters is a treat. The Flying Circus were another highlight, a group of hard-nosed, gun-toting female pilots. They were perhaps my favorite supporting characters in the series, even though the narrator's American accent could use some work--if we're being polite about it. The level of humor and technical writing skill are as high as they've ever been--this story made me laugh out loud so many times--and the series is nicely tying the events of previous novels into something more comprehensive.

It’s Cabal and Horst: what more could you want?

If you know the series, you won’t be surprised by the quality of the writing or the tale. If you don’t, I still recommend it, but think The Detective is a better starting point.

loving it

I love this series and how it's written and performed, I didn't like how Horst was performed with a more cockney accent than expected but otherwise everything was fantastic

Full of action and tales of...<br />

A most excellent addition to the ongoing adventures of Herr Johannes Cabal. It ties well into earlier stories and leaves plenty of room for further explorations of Herr Cabal and associates, and antagonists.
