Histoire
When COVID-19 sweeps through New York City, Jamie Gray is stuck as a dead-end driver for food-delivery apps. That is, until Jamie makes a delivery to an old acquaintance, Tom, who works at what he calls “an animal rights organization”. Tom’s team needs a last-minute grunt to handle things on their next field visit. Jamie, eager to do anything, immediately signs on. What Tom doesn't tell Jamie is that the animals his team cares for are not here on Earth. Not our Earth, at at least. In an alternate dimension, dinosaur-like creatures named Kaiju roam a warm and human-free world.

John Perry did two things on his 75th birthday. First he visited his wife's grave. Then he joined the army. The good news is that humanity finally made it into interstellar space. The bad news is that planets fit to live on are scarce—and alien races willing to fight us for them are common. So: we fight. To defend Earth, and to stake our own claim to planetary real estate. Far from Earth, the war has been going on for decades: brutal, bloody, unyielding. Earth itself is a backwater.

Our universe is ruled by physics, and faster-than-light travel is not possible - until the discovery of The Flow, an extradimensional field we can access at certain points in space-time that transports us to other worlds, around other stars. Humanity flows away from Earth, into space, and in time forgets our home world and creates a new empire, the Interdependency, whose ethos requires that no one human outpost can survive without the others. It's a hedge against interstellar war - and a system of control for the rulers of the empire.

Histoire
Once upon a time, in the magical land of San Francisco, there lived a not-so-ordinary girl named Laurel Pettigrew. She was supposed to be the Chosen One. The plan was simple: She would vanquish the great evil Tybus in an epic battle. But destiny had other ideas, and Laurel's performance in the whole heroics department was a colossal flop. Now, instead of being a legendary hero, Laurel's the resident pariah of the magic realm. And what’s worse, the dark wizard Tybus swooped in, took over the realm, and forced all supernatural creatures to live under his tyrannical rule.

Description
Ensign Andrew Dahl has just been assigned to the Universal Union Capital Ship Intrepid, flagship of the Universal Union since the year 2456. It’s a prestige posting, and Andrew is thrilled all the more to be assigned to the ship’s Xenobiology laboratory. Life couldn’t be better…until Andrew begins to pick up on the facts that (1) every Away Mission involves some kind of lethal confrontation with alien forces; (2) the ship’s captain, its chief science officer, and the handsome Lieutenant Kerensky always survive these confrontations; and (3) at least one low-ranked crew member is, sadly, always killed.
Not surprisingly, a great deal of energy below decks is expended on avoiding, at all costs, being assigned to an Away Mission. Then Andrew stumbles on information that completely transforms his and his colleagues’ understanding of what the starship Intrepid really is…and offers them a crazy, high-risk chance to save their own lives.

Stars can’t do it justice
This book was actually very difficult to rate. The story itself was great. I thoroughly enjoyed the story itself. The performance was good. I like Wil Wheaton and I think he did an ok job with the material he was given. I rated these pretty high because I don’t want my next portion to diminish what was an entertaining (albeit poorly grammer’d) story.
I am, however dumping my disdain of the “he said, she said, they said” into the overall score as I’m not entirely sure where else to put it. There is a problem with the story when, in several sections, every third or fourth word was followed by “(insert character) said”

Once Again Thought Provoking. ..
disguised as lite entertainment. John Scalzi is a master story teller with a sense a humour. There was one point I was worried. Thought the story was heading in a reckless direction. Wrong. Just a necessary plot point to turn us in the right direction.

Meh.
Meh. It was ok, but I completely lost interest and abandoned it during the coda(s). It was a neat idea, but the execution just wasn't there for me.
Listened to the audiobook version and Will Wheaton's narration, which I ordinarily love, got to me after a while. There were too many characters that had the same sounding "voice" both in acting and in actual dialogue. Scalzi is sometimes dialogue-heavy which I don't mind, but when there are a lot of characters throwing fits of sarcasm around it starts to feel same-y. You can't help but notice the dialogue tags after a while, ",said Dahl ... ,said Finn ... ,said Dahl ... " etc

Only ok, not bad but not great
I appreciated the premise but two things prevent this from being great
First is the constant use of “He said/She said”. Scalzi does a reasonable job giving his characters some personality but the constant use of He said/She said distracts from the narrative
The second is unfortunately Wil Wheaton himself. His narration is good but he does little to make the characters distinct such as accents and different vocal cues. It was impossible to tell the characters apart without being told so
Despite these flaws overall this was still a good listen

Not bad, but not as good as I had hoped
The premise was very interesting. I was expecting a quirky and humorous tale of what those miserable redshirts get up to when they realize what is being done to them in a sci-fi movie. The “captain Kirk” persona should have been a gold mine of laughs waiting to happen.
The author did end up breaking the fourth wall, but took it in a different direction. That’s perfectly fine even if it is light on humour, but for a story built on unfortunate supporting cast breaking the fourth wall on a spaceship in the future, it fell short. Think mundane struggles being discussed in a coffee shop in 2012. I would possibly still give it four stars as the story was enjoyable enough mostly and had some nice moral conclusions and thought-provoking dialogue if not for the overuse and unnecessary use of f-bombs; they add nothing to the narrative that couldn’t be done without and ruin the experience a bit.
The performance is very solid and well done, but I have listened to others that go above and beyond by changing the voice and/or bringing the role to life. This one was just well done.

Narrator reads flat mono tone, Dullsville.
This is second of John Scalzi's books that I haven't listened beyond chapter one. I had such a difficult time listening to the narrator, who read the words flat without adding any life.
it was like listening the someone reading the longest attendance list.
I am unable to comment on the story because I did not listen to enough to make a comment.

Too many "F" - bombs. WAY TOO MANY.!
I really enjoyed this story but I had to cringe too many times at the language. I would like to recommend it to family and friends but I can't. The good story is ruined by the vulgar language. Will Weaton of course does an excellent narrative.

good book but said reviewers
this story was excellent and Wheaton does a great job reading although he seemed to struggle with Scalzi's format in this one. I continued to listen but either through writing or reading the use of character "A" said character "B" said was a little maddening.

Enjoyable despite its Quirks
I can’t say I loved the story, but I enjoyed the performance, and the author did a great job with his character and world building to make this an enjoyable listen. Wil Wheaton’s narration was a big plus.
Lots of debate on the codas, so when I reached them, I was curious. It felt too early or abrupt for the story to end. But it was a very curious mechanism for the author to employ. Coda 2 was the one I had trouble with (at least at the start), because of the authors use of “you” to have me think I was that character. Not appreciated when describing horrible things that happened, or poor frames of mind - in fact, I consider that dangerous mentally (it’s very direct language, “you are this,” etc.) I did find the story behind it, and each of the codas interesting, and worthwhile in the end.
But the end, although perfect for coda 3, seemed lacking for the book overall. Feels like a return to the Intrepid itself would have felt more complete.
Interesting book. Won’t be on my recommendation list, but I wouldn’t dissuade folks from reading/listening to it, either.
