Description

Survivors of an apocalypse take refuge in a mountain fortress and face enemies both living and undead in the first three books of this horror series.

Mountain Man: Ever since civilization collapsed in a wave of chaos and blood, Gus Berry has been waking up, getting drunk, and preparing for the day when “they” will come up the side of his mountain. But when Gus encounters another survivor while out scavenging for supplies, he realizes there are other threats on the post-apocalyptic horizon.

Safari: Living on the outskirts of a zombie-infested city, Gus has grown accustomed to the perils he faces on a daily basis. But now the zombies are disappearing, and a mysterious new threat is assembling—something even more relentless and terrifying than the roaming tides of dead flesh. And it’s preparing to hunt . . .

Hellifax: In a world overrun with zombies, Scott is hunting a remorseless killer who’s all too human. Following the murderer from Annapolis to the ice-glazed landscape of Halifax, Scott encounters half-frozen deadheads, infected vermin, and a few remaining survivors struggling to find safety. Welcome to Hellifax.

So Good!

Absolutely amazing, going to dive into the other books in this series next. I listen on my commute to work and found myself looking forward to my drive just to be able to listen to this. Narrator really makes it come alive. If you're a fan of Zombie works you will love this. Though having a few Newfie friends, his Newfie accent needs work lol.

Dear Mr. Bray...

Your capacity to voice distinct characters really brings a story to life. Your mispronounciation of "toque" made me think folks in NS did weird things with their weed, lol.
This series is very entertaining! Written such that you could picture a neighbour in the supporting role.
I'm a bit late to the game, so I started with the prequels. Aces across the board.

Enjoyable, if typical, Zombie fun

Face it, 'Hellifax' will never make the list for Canada Reads. You won't be studying 'Safari' in your Adv Lit classes. This is, on it's face, a pretty standard zombie apocalypse story - go to town for supplies, kill some zombies, fight some bad survivors, befriend some good ones - but "Mountain Man" has some features that make it far better than many books in the genre.

First is Blackmore's writing. The man writes amazingly vivid scenes. His descriptions of battles, in particular, are fantastic, easily visualized with great pacing, tension, and even humor. He clearly enjoys the subject matter and recognizes how actually absurd this premise is. It's not parody, but he joyfully doesn't take his story too seriously. I mean, come on. It's a Zombie story, not classic literature. Blackwood understands that.
Unfortunately, his style does have some flaws, particularly his apparent fascination with genital scratching and pooping.
Also, the number of oh-so-nearly fatal experiences seems a little excessive. I found myself hoping at times that Blackmore would show the courage to pull a G.R.R.Martin and kill off one of his guys. Not so much in these tales.
And why are there so many psychopaths in Blackmore's world? Are crazy people more likely to survive? Or does surviving drive you insane? Thought provoking.
The combination of an almost tongue-in-cheek approach, mind's-eye description, and some philosophical questions is intriguing, entertaining and refreshing.

The second pretty unique aspect of the stories: the setting is SUBURBAN NOVA SCOTIA! Zombie Apocalypse in small town Canada, hordes in the dead of a Canadian winter. Awesome.

Third, Blackmore's characters are fairly unique...not quite antiheroes but very flawed protagonists. Neither terribly clever nor brave, Gus is out of shape and alcoholic. Scott is more of a typical 'hero', but remains a tortured man and a bit of a wuss. While decent fellows, neither are really all that nice. They're relatable, something attempted but not often successful in zombie stories.

Lastly, R.C. Bray is a masterful narrator. This is the first time I've listened to a performance and considered buying a book just because this guy is reading it (though I love Michael Kramer and Roy Dotrice).
One very small issue. Why can't any Non-Canadian say the word "toque"?

All in all, an exceptional collection of novels. 8.5 Stars out of 10.

No one could tell this story like RC Bray, and I hope the future books are narrated by him as well.
It's been a pleasure.

The book to get me hooked on Audio Books!

After listening to the Hospital written by Kieth C. Blackmore and Narrated by R.C. Bray to test Audiobooks to see if I liked them I was completely and utterly hooked. I've listened to over 50 of them now, R.C. Bray still being my most favorite narrator.

Enjoyed the Story but ...

What is up with the voice artist!? Mostly good and enjoyed the performance, but.... what the heck is a "TOKE" as a piece of clothing?! Was there no review of regional pronunciation... or any supervision at all on the performance for a Canadian novel obviously read by an American performer?

Toque. it isn't hard to pronounce.
It is not "TOKE".
We dont have clothing items called "TOKES".
We don't wear TOKES.
As Canadian it was hard to hear every sentence about someone wearing a "TOKE" or taking off a "TOKE".

Please do better.

Interesting story without that though.

(It is pronounced TUKE. Rhymes with NUKE.)

Gotta go, going to go read an audiobook pronouncing ya'll as YALE for 35 hours.

Sadly the story dropped off in Hellifax.

Will continue onto the next ones. Very curious.
