Praise for Carve the Mark:

“Roth skillfully weaves the careful world-building and intricate web of characters that distinguished Divergent.” (VOYA, starred review)

“Roth offers a richly imagined, often brutal world of political intrigue and adventure, with a slow-burning romance at its core.” (ALA Booklist)

Cyra Noavek and Akos Kereseth have grown up in enemy countries locked in a long-standing fight for dominance over their shared planet. When Akos and his brother are kidnapped by the ruling Noavek family, Akos is forced to serve Cyra, the sister of a dictator who governs with violence and fear. Cyra is known for her deadly power of transferring extraordinary pain unto others with simple touch, and her tyrant brother uses her as a weapon against those who challenge him. But as Akos fights for his own survival, he recognizes that Cyra is also fighting for hers, and that her true gift - resilience - might be what saves them both.

When Akos and Cyra are caught in the middle of a raging rebellion, everything they’ve been led to believe about their world and themselves must be called into question. But fighting for what’s right might mean betraying their countries, their families, and each other.

When the time comes, will they choose loyalty or love?

This production includes a bonus excerpt from The Fates Divide, Veronica Roth's powerful follow-up novel performed by Austin Butler, Emily Rankin, Erin Spencer, and MacLeod Andrews!

Begging for a movie

Roth's first book on this series paints a great picture of a Galactic government. It's an obvious love story with some neat twists and turns provided by the "Current" where all "current gifts" come from. The environments and tribes allow the mind to dance among some interesting new worlds.

I think this book could be turned into a dramatic screenplay with an African female lead. #Audible1

Great Narration, Good Writing Style But Slow Plot

I'm a big fan of Veronica Roth so I'm a little sad that I didn't enjoy this story as much. Her writing style is wonderful and free flowing; I just didn't feel like the plot was very engaging. Maybe I was expecting it to be a little more space opera since it was set in space? I guess the development of the world did not really make it feel like we were on a different planet - it just felt like they were on Earth and there were two peoples/cultures that lived in the same country and were in constant conflict.

There seemed to a divided focus on Fates and otherworldly-ness but neither was deeply explained! The beginning started off with strong action and a Fate driven plot, and then by the middle of the story, it only seemed to sort of crop up as a light tie in to Cyra, Elijah, and Akos' lives. It kept being mentioned but it really didn't feel like the characters actions or lives were intertwined with theirs fates for some reason.

There were still some good moments though! Cyra and Akos were likeable and believable in their feelings and their drives. They stuck to their principles and were fairly body positive the whole book. I am hoping that there is MUCH more action and discovery in book 2 because Carve the Mark leaves us on the cusp of rebellion and a mystery relating to Cyra's heritage. I want to know!

"I didn't choose the blood that runs in my veins, any more than you chose your fate. You and I, we've become what we were made to become."
