Description

Returning to the vivid universe of Frank Herbert's Dune, this title continues the saga begun in Dune: House Atreides.

As Shaddam sits at last on the Golden Lion Throne, Baron Vladimir Harkonnen plots against the new Emperor and House Atreides - and against the mysterious Sisterhood of the Bene Gesserit. For Leto Atreides, grown complacent and comfortable as ruler of his House, it is a time of momentous choice: between friendship and duty, safety and destiny. But for the survival of House Atreides, there is just one choice: strive for greatness or be crushed.

Ce que les critiques en disent

"[T]he authors succeed in spinning a gripping adventure while going off in some unexpected directions. Anderson, who has written many successful Star Wars novels, has noted his particular admiration for The Empire Strikes Back, and his desire to emulate that film's dark take on the genre." Plots Within Plots

Another epic tale set in the DUNE universe, this story continues the rise and beginnings of many crucial characters including Jessica, Kynes, Duncan, and Leto.

The story follows many different plotlines that ultimately serve to set the stage for the Dune. I found all of them to be unique, and even if the characters never crossed paths, each plot was interconnected with another. The Imperium continued to expand and opened up new worlds full of danger, betrayal, and tension.

The characters all fit their archetypes and many were complex when faced with tragedy and struggle. I found Jessica, Duncan, and the Vernius children to be the most complicated. This book also explored how the Beast earned his name, a plot that was a roller coaster of struggle and power.

Like the previous books in the series, much of the enjoyment here comes from the world-building. Everything is so intricate and immersive, the politics and plots truly intense. There are consequences and repercussions, most of which are driven by a characters need for power or survival.

I'm enjoying this series more and more, excited to see what comes next from this compelling universe.

21st century accents?

I love the dune backstory, the writing is similar enough to the original to create a seamless feel but I take issue with the "accents" used in the audible presentation. It is highly unlikely that 23 millenia in the future, anyone would speak "Galach" with a Scottish or German or Bedouin accent.

Whining and boring

At first I was enjoying the story, how he manages the prequel, creating a story consistent with the masterpiece his father created. But as the hours dragged on and the story hardly advanced, it just became long whining sessions. around half way through I started to skip ahead. Towards the end, I would listen to the opening and closing of each chapter without missing any plot by skipping past 15 minutes. This would have made a great 12 hour book.
