Stop me if you’ve heard this one. A thief, a candlemaker, an ex-mercenary, and a pig farmer walk into a trap…and what happens to them is no joke. When Riyria is hired to retrieve a jester’s treasure, Royce and Hadrian must match wits with a dwarf who proves to be anything but a fool. Difficult choices will need to be made, and in the end those who laugh last do so because they are the only ones to survive.
This is a standalone short story of 7,200 words. No prior knowledge of The Riyria Revelations or The Riyria Chronicles is required to enjoy it to its fullest, making this a perfect introduction for new readers or a chance for Riyria veterans to spend a little more time with old friends. The Jester is a story of adventure, bonds of friendship, and a recognition that the choices we make dictates the future we find.

It claims to be a stand alone but is 75 percent
Although the story was rather good I got lost sometimes in its telling as the author referenced a number of instances the reader had no partake in during. The issue I had with the quoting of the past events was there was a number of them emoting a rather large story behind the one we listen to. As a suggestion, lessen the amount of explaining backstory. of what happened on their adventure and further current story because it distracted for the story. It made it feel like we where playing catch up to a series already told most of the way through to see the ending first plus a couple of key points in the story.
There is a rich wonderful world that I will now be reading as this story peeked my interest. I know I will enjoy future tails very much because I will have a fuller experience in this immersive world.
As a commercial this story does a good job selling us the listener into reading more. You have a new of your writing
As stand alone story it was a very nice journey but less explanation to what we did not get to see happen them on this adventure was not needed and distracted us from the experience

Nice short story for a great cause.
True to the characters. Makes me want more Hadrian and Royce stories. Kudos to Michael J. Sullivan for lending support for a fellow being and writer.

Great Characters

Good not Great
MJS normally knocks it out of the park on anything he writes, but short stories aren't long enough to establish a proper story line for his type of detail. This was a decent read, especially if you miss Riyria. Overall though, don't expect to be blown away by this one. #Audible1

short but sweet
I found this book just a bit to short. the details were amazing. but I think i would have enjoyed it more if it was just a bit longer. but would still like to say its worth a listen.

A Dungeon with a Deadly Lesson
A brief dungeon crawl, which ended shortly after I felt it got interesting. Something of a bittersweet ending.
Not my favourite of Riyria short story. This one was a little harsh, and a little hollow for me. But I encourage anyone who isn't sure how they feel after, or hasn't given this one a shot yet to listen to "Professional Integrity." I found it gave our heroes more time to shine and show their personalities. They story was also more dynamic, and the side characters had more of a personal stake.
What I mean to say is, if you enjoyed this, great! Read more from the author. If you didn't, give these two heroes a second shot from the other free short story, "Professional Integrity." As a new fan, I found it gripping and well characterized.
