Description

"I've awakened in a stone box about the size of a large coffin.... I'm filthy, everything aches, and, by the various so-called gods, I smell awful. I've woken up in worse places. Hmm. What does that say about my life choices?" (Eric, amateur magician, part-time vampire, and accidental king)

It's not easy being king. Especially when you've got an allergy to sunrise and sunset, a fire goddess for a mother-in-law, demonic adversaries, random assassins, and a basement full of insecurities to cope with. Add to that his daughter, the fire priestess/princess; a couple of lightly deranged professional magicians; a whole city full of wizards; and enough squabbling princes to resemble a kindergarten argument. It's enough to make a man want to just go home. Luckily for Eric, he has the world's fastest pet rock, a smart-mouthed sword, and a horse that not only understands him but likes him anyway.

Still needs a Editor

Just like the previous novel, there is a lot of pointless side quests and ramblings. Some parts are very good and quite exciting; makes this series worth buying part 3 but much of the novel is pointless fluff as the author explains how all the pseudo-science-magic things work in this universe (which is nice but gives 0 contribution to the plot)

Our protagonist continues to be universally loved by everyone and everything. Some of the scenerios are also so eye rolling cliche that the novel must be set down.

With lots of skipping and speeding, this novel continues to be a interesting vampiric twist to a medieval hero fantasy.

Wow, a different type of vampires series!

I am only at book 2 and looking forward to book 3!
as a person who listens to a lot of different audio books on this platform this must be the best vampire series that I have heard here!
The only better vampire story that I have ever listened to is Underwood & Flinch, unfortunately it is not available on Audible. If it was I would purchase it as well.

great book... I'm not stoked with the ending<br />

I loved the entire world building of the book the the ending left me wanted an alternate finish. I'm still fan of the series and hope the next one will start off at a good pace.

Terrible Ending

This book is 42 hours... FORTY TWO HOURS.

You'd think in all that time the author would be able to tell a complete story, but somehow he manages not to do that. About 25% of this book is just sitting in the MC's head listening to him think about how magic works, but that didn't drive me completely off. I'd have been okay with that IF.... IF.... IF this book had a conclusion.

Nope. Not here. Not this book.

Instead the story just stops when the bad guys are winning. No resolution. No sense that anything's really been accomplished. It's almost like a "Build a Village" LitRPG with no plot.

Awesome... I just spent an entire work week listening to a guy think about magic, how to put together spells, and build up his little kingdom, and all of that long contemplation is useless because it doesn't do anything useful by the end of the book. He and his magic doesn't even defeat the antagonist. He doesn't even wound the antagonist. What the f' is the point?

I will say that I do like Fred, but that's about all I look back on and find truly satisfying.

Enjoyable but annoying at times

This is definitely a long book and for the most part, it's quite enjoyable. I just wish that there were less parts where Eric was a whiney child. There are many times Eric constantly questions himself regardless of what those around him tell him and it can get on your nerves quickly. There were times I just wanted the story to progress.

Also, I'm concerned if every book in this series is going to be defined by a tragedy, because The first book had people dying and this book does the same, along with the ending, which I didn't really like.

I also hope less people die since one time is impactful, two times is surprising and three or more times is just plain annoying. It's hard to like characters when all you can think is "when will this loved one die". Main reason I don't like GOT. But I got sidetracked, I'm going to continue with the series because I feel too invested now but I hope it becomes lighter and that some actual growth as a person is seen from Eric. I much prefer the comical banter between him and Firebrand and Bronze.

OH NO!!! I have to wait for book 3. :(

I loved listening to this novel! The story grabbed my attention immediately and it held it through to the end. I love the magic system, it makes sense to me, and I love how the protagonist works through the problems he encounters by using magic and his vampire powers. This is a truly unique vampire story and it's truly epic. There is a HUGE cliffhanger at the end, which leaves me chomping at the bit wanting to know what happens in Book 3. I hope it's not a long wait. I think the narrator is a perfect match too. I can't imagine any one else narrating it. Sean Runnette was excellant!

I really enjoy this series. Although the story is long it always ends sooner than I would like. Can't wait for the next story! Great work Mark, I mean Garon👍🏾😍!

Damn.

This book rocks. The only problem that I have with it, is that I really want the sequel to this one and its not out yet so I'm frustrated.

Waste of a credit

The first book was great. But this one
Is very confusing. It jumps to far ahead
Leaves to many stories untold. Not to mention it doesn't explain how he's able to do things like ( use magic while he's a night lord ) very disappointed in this book. Won't be buying the third !!

Deep, Rich, Amusing.

Beautifully done. A vampire story without being a typical YA vampire story. The story has humor, depth, and is surprisingly captivating for being so very, very long. The narrator has a pleasing and varied voice. He does a really good job of separating the various characters and keeping their voices straight. Buy this audio book on its own or with the previous in the series. Either way, you are in for a treat and I envy you your first listen.

Even better than the last!

I do not normally write reviews, but I had to for this book. The first book in this series was spectacular but this book eclipses the first by far. Gritty, dark fantasy, wonderful world building, exceptional characters, humor and death. This book has it all. I can't wait for the next book in the series.

Great story telling Garon, thank you for a wonderful series. And Sean, you really bring the book to life for me. Thank you both.
