After Englishman John Blackthorne is lost at sea, he awakens in a place few Europeans know of and even fewer have seen—Nippon. Thrust into the closed society that is seventeenth-century Japan, a land where the line between life and death is razor-thin, Blackthorne must negotiate not only a foreign people, with unknown customs and language, but also his own definitions of morality, truth, and freedom. As internal political strife and a clash of cultures lead to seemingly inevitable conflict, Blackthorne’s loyalty and strength of character are tested by both passion and loss.

The life of Emperor Charles V (1500-1558), ruler of Spain, Germany, the Netherlands, and much of Italy and Central and South America, has long intrigued biographers. But the elusive nature of the man (despite an abundance of documentation), his relentless travel and the control of his own image, together with the complexity of governing the world's first transatlantic empire, complicate the task.

It's been centuries since the robots of Panga gained self-awareness and laid down their tools; centuries since they wandered, en masse, into the wilderness, never to be seen again; centuries since they faded into myth and urban legend. One day, the life of a tea monk is upended by the arrival of a robot, there to honor the old promise of checking in. The robot cannot go back until the question of "what do people need?" is answered. But the answer to that question depends on who you ask, and how.

Inner walls are the highest
A good illustration of how unspoken rules are always stricter than written laws, how the internalized unfreedom is the worst possible tyranny. A horrid picture of a self-isolated, deeply corrupted society that spiritually castrates itself for the sake of backwardly understood equality. Slow-going story, but good reading anyways.

Just couldn’t get into it
I actually restarted this title from the beginning after an hour or so, because I realized that I wasn’t listening to the story. Next time around I still struggled to keep my attention on it, and finally couldn’t wait for it to end.
There are a lot of good reviews, so many people liked this, but it just didn’t work for me

I really like lots of what Ursula has written. the lathe of heaven and the earth sea series have me ravenously trying to devour anything she has offered. I have been admittedly distracted while listening to this, but the locations, and characters failed to distinguish themselves enough to tell the Vivid story I'm sure she had envisioned. it certainly isn't a standalone book. the ending is dull and Scattered. hopefully subsequent books in the series will pick up on some of the exciting ideas introduced here. I will take them in, because Ursula's mind is fascinating to spend time in. this was lackluster though. my review is obviously at odds with other's. take it with a grain of salt.

Very captivating
I initially disliked the narrators voice, although it quickly became a non-issue. A very interesting and captivating book despite having no combat or even a very explicit set of problems for the protagonist to overcome. It was not my usual genre, but I’m glad I tried it. There are very nuanced and tasteful thoughts on feminism, communism (both authoritarian and libertarian), travel, psychology, and other less dramatic themes. They are all thoughtfully interwoven into a very compelling narrative that turned into a real page turner (ear turner?).

Incredible Book that make you think.
I used this Audiobook as a second reading of the book after I had read a paper copy. The first reading was good, this audiobook was amazing.
The narrator adds so much depth to the story, which is already one that raises so many questions that you can’t help but think about it for weeks afterwards.
If you’re a sci fi nerd, interested in political philosophy, or just like a good philosophical fiction this is the one for you.

Great Intellectual Sci Fi
Much like Asimov's work, The Dispossessed is dialogue and concept-driven Science Fiction. Not a lot in the way of action but full of rich world-building and ideas about society and our connections to wealth, culture, and the stars.

One of the best sci-fi novels, and one of the best novels, I've ever read. The Universe described is a fascinating, imaginative political utopia and dystopia. The characters are dynamic and the plot is exciting, but unforced.

Slow, slow story
This is my second Ursula K. Leguin book and they are too slow moving for my taste.
Maybe the book format would be better but the audio format causes me to lose focus.
