Histoire
Founded by the mysterious genius known as the Designer, the archipelago of Prospera lies hidden from the horrors of a deteriorating outside world. In this island paradise, Prospera’s lucky citizens enjoy long, fulfilling lives until the monitors embedded in their forearms, meant to measure their physical health and psychological well-being, fall below 10 percent. Then they retire themselves, embarking on a ferry ride to the island known as the Nursery, where their failing bodies are renewed, their memories are wiped clean, and they are readied to restart life afresh.

And she is heading with inexorable determination to a destination that only she knows. But Shana and her sister are not alone. Soon, they are joined by a flock of sleepwalkers from across America, on the same mysterious journey. And like Shana, there are other "shepherds" who follow the flock to protect their friends and family on the long dark road ahead.

Hig survived the flu that killed everyone he knows. His wife is gone, his friends are dead, he lives in the hangar of a small abandoned airport with his dog, his only neighbor a gun-toting misanthrope. In his 1956 Cessna, Hig flies the perimeter of the airfield or sneaks off to the mountains to fish and to pretend that things are the way they used to be. But when a random transmission somehow beams through his radio, the voice ignites a hope deep inside him that a better life exists beyond the airport.

Histoire
The cabin had always been a special retreat for Isherwood Williams, a haven from the demands of society. But one day while hiking, Ish was bitten by a rattlesnake, and the solitude he had so desired took on dire new significance. Ish headed home when he finally felt himself again—and noticed the strangeness almost immediately. No cars passed him on the road; the gas station not far from his cabin looked abandoned; and he was shocked to see the body of a man on the roadside near a small town. Without a radio or phone, Ish had no idea of humanity’s abrupt demise.

The world outside has grown toxic, the view of it limited, talk of it forbidden. The remnants of humanity live underground in a single silo. But there are always those who hope, who dream. These are the dangerous people, the residents who infect others with their optimism. Their punishment is simple. They are given the very thing they want: They are allowed to go outside.

Lynesse is the lowly Fourth Daughter of the queen, and always getting in the way. But a demon is terrorizing the land, and now she's an adult (albeit barely) with responsibilities (she tells herself). Although she still gets in the way, she understands that the only way to save her people is to invoke the pact between her family and the Elder sorcerer who has inhabited the local tower for as long as her people have lived here (though none in living memory has approached it).

No one knows exactly when it began or where it originated. A terrifying new plague is spreading like wildfire across the country, striking cities one by one: Boston, Detroit, Seattle. The doctors call it Draco Incendia Trychophyton. To everyone else it's Dragonscale, a highly contagious, deadly spore that marks its hosts with beautiful black and gold marks across their bodies - before causing them to burst into flames. Millions are infected; blazes erupt everywhere. There is no antidote. No one is safe.

Since his wife died, Ralph Roberts has been having trouble sleeping. Each night he wakes up a bit earlier until he's barely sleeping at all. During his late-night walks, he observes some strange things going on in Derry, Maine. He sees colored ribbons streaming from people's heads, two strange little men wandering around town after dark, and more. He begins to suspect that these visions are something more than hallucinations brought on by lack of sleep.

Description
New York Times best seller.
This thrilling novel kicks off what Stephen King calls “a trilogy that will stand as one of the great achievements in American fantasy fiction".
Now a FOX TV series!
Named one of Paste’s best horror books of the decade.
Named one of the 10 best novels of the year by TIME and one of the best books of the year by The Washington Post, Esquire, U.S. News & World Report, NPR/On Point, St. Louis Post-Dispatch, BookPage, and Library Journal.
“It happened fast. Thirty-two minutes for one world to die, another to be born".
An epic and gripping tale of catastrophe and survival, The Passage is the story of Amy - abandoned by her mother at the age of six, pursued, and then imprisoned by the shadowy figures behind a government experiment of apocalyptic proportions. But Special Agent Brad Wolgast, the lawman sent to track her down, is disarmed by the curiously quiet girl and risks everything to save her. As the experiment goes nightmarishly wrong, Wolgast secures her escape - but he can’t stop society’s collapse. And as Amy walks alone, across miles and decades, into a future dark with violence and despair, she is filled with the mysterious and terrifying knowledge that only she has the power to save the ruined world. Look for the entire Passage trilogy:

Ce que les critiques en disent
“[A] blockbuster.” (The New York Times)
“Mythic storytelling.” (San Francisco Chronicle)
“Magnificent...Cronin has taken his literary gifts, and he has weaponized them...The Passage can stand proudly next to Stephen King’s apocalyptic masterpiece The Stand, but a closer match would be Cormac McCarthy’s The Road: A story about human beings trying to generate new hope in a world from which all hope has long since been burnt.” (Time)

The Passage
A very interesting story about a futuristic pandemic-like world. The characters are very well defined. A difficult read at times because of the deaths and sorrows I found the end to be confusing.

ZZZZZ *snort... wait, what happened to Amy?
I really wanted to read this book. I looked forward to my credit to get this book. Part 1 was great... action packed! I liked the characters and the storyline. I even waited to watch the TV show to see how it compared to the book. I didn't have to go very far to realise it's NOTHING like the TV show. After getting to part 3, I understood why the show is arranged the way it is. It is mind-numbing, tedious, and confusing. It was like listening to the Bible... this one begat that one. That one begat that other one over by the well. The well was filled with cool water with a slight taste of burnt almond. Is the water safe to drink? Mouse Patel scurried past the barn filled with screaming littles... but I digress. And the narrator... after suffering through his monotoned weird manner of speaking, I looked forward to the others listed in the credits. Part 2! A new woman! It lasted about ten minutes and we're back to Boring McMonotone. What happened? We had magic girl, hooker mom, tortured FBI agent, creepy vampires... suddenly we had a list of log reports, unrequited (yet boring) love, cooking jack rabbits, and drawn out one hundred years later. I made it to Chapter 25... I can't even imagine getting to Chapter 87!!! Terrible... just terrible.

Good narrator. Predictable writing
Same narrator who did The Stand. Very similar to The Stand in theme, tone, imagery etc, to the point I had to look up Justin Cronin to make sure he wasn’t a pen name for Stephen King. Decent narration but I won’t be listening to the subsequent books.

This is one of the best genre-fiction books I've ever read.
This is the kind of sprawling epic detailed story that made me love Stephen King's The Stand.

Epic Post-Apocalyptic
Oh boy that was a long read (36 hours on audiobook)! I honestly didn’t think I would get all the way to the end, I get bored easily. But it turned out the storyline was well constructed and kept me going at a good pace. It’s not perfect, it probably could have been condensed a little bit more, but it’s good enough that I’ll definitely check out book 2 when I’m ready for another long read.
