Description

The sixth novel in James S. A. Corey's New York Times best-selling Expanse series - now a major television series from the Syfy. A revolution brewing for generations has begun in fire. It will end in blood.

The Free Navy - a violent group of Belters in black-market military ships - has crippled the Earth and begun a campaign of piracy and violence among the outer planets. The colony ships heading for the thousand new worlds on the far side of the alien ring gates are easy prey, and no single navy remains strong enough to protect them.

James Holden and his crew know the strengths and weaknesses of this new force better than anyone. Outnumbered and outgunned, the embattled remnants of the old political powers call on the Rocinante for a desperate mission to reach Medina Station at the heart of the gate network.

But the new alliances are as flawed as the old, and the struggle for power has only just begun. As the chaos grows, an alien mystery deepens. Pirate fleets, mutiny, and betrayal may be the least of the Rocinante's problems. And in the uncanny spaces past the ring gates, the choices of a few damaged and desperate people may determine the fate of more than just humanity.

Entertaining and a good listen

I wouldn’t say it his strongest work, but still very enjoyable and the narrator did a good job. If you like the other books you will not be disappointed.

Can't get enough of The Expanse.

I love, adore Chrisjen Avasarala. She holds nothing back and even when she is broken on the inside, she keeps her strength and courageously does what needs to get done. Holden and Naomi are so good together! So much love and acceptance of each other. Holden is so adorable at times! So naive too but above all, he is fair, he can't help it. Holden is a hell of a righteous man. I can't pick a favourite scene, dialogue or moment because there are too many. I am happy I've got to read about Amos, Bobbie, Clarissa, Alex, Anna, Prax and Naomi.
Michio Pa earned my respect and I am looking forward to read what became of her. Filip made the right decision at the end. However, too little, too late in my opinion. As for Marco Inaros? He can rot in hell or wherever he disappeared to. Good riddance! Despicable character!
The narrator is superb. He acted the scenes without overdoing it. Each character had his/her own voice. Excellent performance!

lots of filler

this entire book feels like an epilogue to nemesis games.

I really wanted this book. I was looking forward to it. but after the last book I didn't enjoy this one nearly as much. too much is just about clean up. and it doesn't really go anywhere. you have to read it though to see where the story is going. 80 % of this book is world-building or laying the foundation for the next book , or cleaning up the aftermath of the last book. I'm still excited about where this story can go. Just wish this book would have been better. We don't spend enough time with characters that you care about. lots of new characters that you don't have as much of an investment with. Bobby is back but not used in the way you want her to be. I could say more but again the main point is that this is a book that she gets through to get to the next one which I hope will be great.

Gees what happened?

Any additional comments?

I am a huge Expanse series fan. I will listen to this series a few times in my lifetime, but I will dread book six. Twenty hours of book and maybe four hours of entertainment. The authors got insanely self indulgent into the inner thoughts of minds of all the characters, relevant or not. Do any of you remember Dr. Prax Mays from book one? Well he is in this one and at one time, we got to hear about how the hair of one of his university professors looked. Yup. Page fillers galore. If book one had been like book six, I would rate it one star and return it for a refund and ignore the rest of the series. But since the first five were so awesome, I will make the long wait for book seven and buy it. If that one sucks as well, then I will consider the Expanse series as ending with number five. Not since Firefly or SG1 have I looked forward to the next installment so much. Now, blah. I see where they are going. No more being fascinated by the creation of the gates and all the worlds beyond. Now it's just the political landscape, and we get to hear every thought, every doubt, every nuance of every character in every scene. Maybe they are trying to create another War and Peace. A big fat book I could never quite get through.

Jefferson Mays was great as always.

Done at last!

The series was pretty engrossing & this book was the best of the lot in some ways. Unfortunately, like previous novels, this one is too long for its subject. Worse, this one started several new threads only to drop them. when all is said and done, I'm glad to be done.

Love the series, but not this book.

BA took it's sweet time getting into gear. Loved the previous books minus CB. BA and CB suffered many of the same issues in my opinion. Too many insignificant POV's padding time between interesting content. Multiple climax sections and the author(s) just end chapter and fast forward a large chunk of time. I wanted to like this book. The story is full of amazing events and characters, but the delivery was not continually interesting.

Extends the story, but very monotonous at times

It is a logical next step in the series, but feels like a bridge to the next action. I only felt truly engaged with the story twice. The rest of the time i was bored.

Not Getting Any Better

Would you listen to Babylon's Ashes again? Why?

I will definitely work my way through this series again in my lifetime, but it'll be a while.

Have you listened to any of Jefferson Mays’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Mays' ability to nuance tone, pacing, and accent is one of my biggest draws to this series.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I miss Arjun, but that's more of something that wasn't in the book than a moment that did move me.

Any additional comments?

Full disclosure: I am a sucker for both dystopian Sci-Fi and strong female protagonists. That being said, this series is losing its grip on me. I love the proto-molecule storyline and am totally bored with the relentless useless details and political back-and-forth that seem to creep in more and more with each book. Give me more Sci- and less Fi-, and don't bring up details that aren't relevant to my understanding of the story.

Least engaging of the series

The story wandered too much into things I couldn't care less about. Almost no development with the main characters. There wasn't much of a point to me investing my time into this. I wish I had just read a plot summary.

Bad Fan Fiction

If this had been the first book in the series, it would have been the only book I would have read. This book picks up where the last book ended; which in this case is a bad thing. It's like watching the sequel to high-intensity police action film and this film being a reality TV show of all the administrative, bureaucratic paperwork that gets filed the next day. Boring. This book felt like bad fan fiction.

very slow moving story line with a quick end.

I really love this book series, but this was the hardest one to fully sit through. It was very slow moving and some of the chapters were very hard to sit through. Interested to see how well the Nextbook goes or if the author drops the ball on the storyline this time as well.

Worst Book in Series

This is my favorite series, I love that every book is different. But this book had some serious problems.

1) nothing really happened. It was all basically one extra chapter from Nemesis Games. No alien technology really came into play and Holden and his crew weren't even really the main characters as much.

2) The antagonist was torn down. The whole time people are doubting and betraying and undermining him and then it comes to one huge anticlimactic ending. Holden and the Rose's crew have been through SO much adversity that to fight a guy who's organization is falling apart already and I don't consider him a real threat is just boring... this plot was so boring.

Besides that, Jefferson Mays was as always an amazing performer. I'm just disappointed and frankly confused from the praise this book is getting.
