Description

In this modern spiritual classic, the Tibetan meditation master Chögyam Trungpa highlights the commonest pitfall to which every aspirant on the spiritual path falls prey: what he calls spiritual materialism. The universal tendency, he shows, is to see spirituality as a process of self-improvement - the impulse to develop and refine the ego when the ego is, by nature, essentially empty. "The problem is that ego can convert anything to its own use," he said, "even spirituality."

His incisive, compassionate teachings serve to wake us up from this trick we all play on ourselves and to offer us a far brighter reality: the true and joyous liberation that inevitably involves letting go of the self rather than working to improve it. It is a message that has resonated with students for nearly thirty years and remains fresh as ever today. This new edition includes a foreword by Chögyam Trungpa's son and lineage holder, Sakyong Mipham.

Excellent

If you are ready to cut through the belief that your spiritual practice is "improving" you and cast aside New Age notions that you can "get something" by changing the way you think, this book will create a clearing for something else to happen. Gave me clarity and an understanding of foundations of Buddhism.

This book moved me

After listening to this book I immediately want to listen to it again but first will go through his other works. This is the best book I’ve ever listened to in my entire life.

Great insight into Buddhist ideology.

Letting it soak in for awhile. Will definitely require listening again. Mainly due to the Tibetan words; pronunciation and meaning.

Profound

Great book, very profound and thought provoking. I'm not Buddhist but I still fully enjoyed this book and got a lot out of it.

You must have this if you follow the Dharma

The narration is better than some of his books but it was still a little stilted :
however the teachings are phenomenal and everyone involved in the Dharma should read this book in particular.

Deepening my awareness

Appreciate this first teaching from the master, Trungpa. I refer back to this repeatedly - it's a guide to my journey.

A must read, a must hear, a must have!

One of the very best, possibly the best, books on Buddhist studies, spiritual understanding, and the practice of meditation. Great narration as well! Treat ‘yo self!
