A Great Origin Story

I didn't read the original series that Zahn wrote containing Thrawn, but I can only imagine the character lives up to his past iterations.

The story takes place before the Rebel Alliance is formed so there aren't any epic battle or familiar rebel characters. The story, however, does a great job showing the Empire in it's earlier days and the life of people within the Empire.

Zahn wrote Thrawn as a stunning character who never ceased to surprise, outwit and display an incredible intellect and strategic mind throughout the story.
The closest thing I can liken the character Thrawn to is the modern adaptations of Sherlock Holmes.

The book also foreshadows new stories and threats from the unknown region that I hope play a larger role in the future of the Star Wars franchise!

Really fun.

The stakes aren’t to high, but its written by the bets Star Wars author, and its read by an excellent narrator.

Entertaining Addition to the Star Wars Mythos

Really not much happens in this novel - but it delivers on what is promised. Timothy Zahn enriches the sweeping Canon by exploring and developing a most fascinating character: Mitth'raw'nuruodo. The novel covers the Chiss soldier's ascendancy from his discovery as an exile from his own people to "capture", training as an Imperial officer, role in battling various Imperial enemies as he earns promotion, and growth into his role as a skilled and ruthless military strategist and servant to the Emperor Palpatine.
The book definitely starts inauspiciously: the express goal of this project is to develop a character (and literally NOTHING ELSE). The "events" in the novel are largely inconsequential (and perhaps overly involved), far too many characters are introduced, and political maneuvering and intrigue (generally pretty dry subject matter) is integral to the storyline. Realistically, I should have lost interest as this doomed-to-be-boring novel progressed.. but I didn’t.
Zahn drives a nice pace and somehow keeps a necessarily weak (characterization-driven) plot immersive. The descriptions are vivid, the dialogue is believable, and characters are complex. In fact, the author masterfully manages the drawbacks inherent in the book's explanatory mandate.

Marc Thompson is a genuinely effective reader. Individual character voices are easily recognizable - despite a Huge number of them. Other than for female characters (he sucks at those), Thompson uses accents and tone effectively (without overdoing it). He furthermore exhibits exemplary timbre and has a brilliant sense of pacing.
Another potential killer: This recording makes *generous* use of sound effects and music [there is quiet setting-based background noise, for example (machinery hum on Star Destroyers; insect buzzing on planet surfaces; crowd noises at functions; etc.)]. But it turns out to be a nice touch without being intrusive. This recording (full of blaster/explosion simulations and burdened with DOZENS of characters) risks being overproduced.. but Random House Audio and Mr Thompson hold back admirably.

Altogether, this book is surprisingly good. The topic should be boring, the narration should be overloaded with characters, and the sound engineers should be overenthusiastic. Instead, we are treated to a deftly executed treat. You don’t even need to be a diehard to enjoy it (I have never watched 'Star Wars: Rebels', for example). I give this engrossing SciFi effort 9.5 stars out of 10. I look forward to the second installment in the Trilogy (featuring now 'Grand Admiral' Thrawn).

Amazing performance and superb writing.

You are inside Thrawn's mind the whole way and forget he is Imperial Evil.

Great story !

Loved every minute of it. Each of the three main characters are deep, multi faceted, and change throughout the story. the performance and voice acting are second to none, he really brought the characters and the action to life . not a dull moment in this story, it will have you wondering what happens next ! now I'm hooked on both the author and the performer . great job.
