Description

Since Darwin's day, we've been told that sexual monogamy comes naturally to our species. Mainstream science - as well as religious and cultural institutions - has maintained that men and women evolved in families in which a man's possessions and protection were exchanged for a woman's fertility and fidelity. But this narrative is collapsing. Fewer and fewer couples are getting married, and divorce rates keep climbing as adultery and flagging libido drag down even seemingly solid marriages.

How can reality be reconciled with the accepted narrative? It can't be, according to renegade thinkers Christopher Ryan and Cacilda Jetha. While debunking almost everything we "know" about sex, they offer a bold alternative explanation in this provocative and brilliant book.

Ryan and Jetha's central contention is that human beings evolved in egalitarian groups that shared food, child care, and, often, sexual partners. Weaving together convergent, frequently overlooked evidence from anthropology, archaeology, primatology, anatomy, and psychosexuality, the authors show how far from human nature monogamy really is. Human beings everywhere and in every era have confronted the same familiar, intimate situations in surprisingly different ways. The authors expose the ancient roots of human sexuality while pointing toward a more optimistic future illuminated by our innate capacities for love, cooperation, and generosity.

Ce que les critiques en disent

“Funny, witty, and light ... Sex at Dawn is a scandal in the best sense, one that will have you reading the best parts aloud and reassessing your ideas about humanity’s basic urges well after the book is done.” ( Newsweek)
Sex at Dawn is the single most important book about human sexuality since Alfred Kinsey unleashed Sexual Behavior in the Human Male on the American public in 1948.” (Dan Savage)
"My favorite book of 2010...it's the only book I read this year that proved that I was badly mistaken about something." (Peter Sagal, host of NPR's Wait Wait... Don't Tell Me!)

Yet another take on the noble savage

I think that the authors have a point on whether humans are a monogamous species but they are not the first and not the last to make that point, I believe that the one they called standard narrative does not really exist, they end up presenting a noble savage classical story, everybody was so happy, healthy and peaceful until the terrible civilization came along and destroyed the beautiful world.
They make look like civilization was some sort of conspiracy that came from another planet, civilization is a human creation and if something is unnatural about it well humans put it there. If they had focus on presenting evidence on the point they mentioned they were going to make things would have been better but since they had another agenda on presenting a noble savage story well they failed, in certain parts of the book I was sure I was listening to pseudoscience and not a scientific approach on the origins of modern sexuality.

I thought I'd learn more. Meh.

The author(s) spend so much time pointing out the follies of scientist (and whoever) who lived before modern technologies and science. Instead of concentrating on modern knowledge (and building evidence and solid ground from it) the book spends a great deal of time point out the faults of long dead and some current scientists 99% of us do not know. I'm left with questions the book should have answered and left wondering if there other motivations in why it is written this way. I feel it likely I could have found a book that could have done a better job answering the how, why, and what this books sub title speaks to.

An Interesting Perspective

Good listen! Definetly widened my perspective of human sexuality, monogamy and history. I found it to be very informative, perhaps a bit hard to follow with my uneducated brain, but usually I was able to keep up. I did find it ended rather abruptly, but I suppose it leaves you to make your own opinion on the topics presented. would definetly recommend, though only to the open minded... lol

Everyone should read this book!

As a bi open polyamourous man I do not struggle with stretching the limits of what could be. Anyone not so lucky should read this book. Great overview of how we came to limit ourselves with rigid definitions of love and sex. Great eye opener on what could be. The pain inflicted by such rigid definitions is real. IE broken families and heartaches. Not that a book will change all that overnight but one can hope that over time we as a species will free ourselves of the limitations brought about by religions and narrow mindedness. This book is a step in acheiving that. Thx to the authors!

Lacking in Logic

This book posed some great questions regarding social and relationship problems of the modern time. Instead of answering these questions directly , it made a lot of insinuations about the benefits of polygamy. The arguments were poor, fallacy loaded and extremely one sided. I did learn a lot about bonobos though.

Absolute Garbage & Waste of your Time

Horribly written, you can hear the resentment as the author attempts to “debunk” the wealth of knowledge we have discovered regarding evolutionary psychology. The author Constantly strawman’s the status quo by miss-understanding it, then adding actual misogynistic viewpoints and combining the two as if their one and the same. Most un-informed, resentful & strawman filled book I have ever read. 0/10. Go read a book that’s actually filled with correct information rather than clearly false propaganda.

A fun humanizing of sexuality

This is a light and at the same time serious look at human sexuality. A different take on a theme that still confounds many humans. Thoroughly enjoyable and very well narrated.

absolutely essential listening

suggested reading for all human beings. highly recommended.
any religion race nationality or sexual preference will get something out of this. if you are particularly religious, it may challenge you, but I suggest it will do so respectfully and in a positive way.

Insight into something that should come naturally!

Insightful to say the least, most eye opening was how much of my view of natural history was based on an economic essay… and I can change my worldview from now on!

Persuasive and provocative

I found this book very entertaining. Many people are concerned that this information will be used to demand or justify non-monogamy. Even if everything in Sex at Dawn is 100% correct, you still get to decide if monogamy is for you or not. If you need a more academic read, I'm sure there are tons of academic reviews that support or rip it to shreds.
