Description

Based on his own extraordinary life, Gregory David Roberts’ Shantaram is a mesmerizing novel about a man on the run who becomes entangled within the underworld of 1980s Bombay—the basis for the Apple + TV series starring Charlie Hunnam.

“It took me a long time and most of the world to learn what I know about love and fate and the choices we make, but the heart of it came to me in an instant, while I was chained to a wall and being tortured.”

An escaped convict with a false passport, Lin flees maximum security prison in Australia for the teeming streets of Bombay, where he can disappear. Accompanied by his guide and faithful friend, Prabaker, the two enter the city’s hidden society of beggars and gangsters, prostitutes and holy men, soldiers and actors, and Indians and exiles from other countries, who seek in this remarkable place what they cannot find elsewhere.

As a hunted man without a home, family, or identity, Lin searches for love and meaning while running a clinic in one of the city’s poorest slums, and serving his apprenticeship in the dark arts of the Bombay mafia. The search leads him to war, prison torture, murder, and a series of enigmatic and bloody betrayals. The keys to unlock the mysteries and intrigues that bind Lin are held by two people. The first is Khader Khan: mafia godfather, criminal-philosopher-saint, and mentor to Lin in the underworld of the Golden City. The second is Karla: elusive, dangerous, and beautiful, whose passions are driven by secrets that torment her and yet give her a terrible power.

Burning slums and five-star hotels, romantic love and prison agonies, criminal wars and Bollywood films, spiritual gurus and mujaheddin guerrillas—this huge novel has the world of human experience in its reach, and a passionate love for India at its heart.

Ce que les critiques en disent

"Shantaram is a novel of the first order, a work of extraordinary art, a thing of exceptional beauty. If someone asked me what the book was about, I would have to say everything, every thing in the world. Gregory David Roberts does for Bombay what Lawrence Durrell did for Alexandria, what Melville did for the South Seas, and what Thoreau did for Walden Pond: He makes it an eternal player in the literature of the world." (Pat Conroy)

"[A] sprawling, intelligent novel…full of vibrant characters…the exuberance of his prose is refreshing…Roberts brings us through Bombay's slums and opium houses, its prostitution dens and ex-pat bars, saying, You come now. And we follow." (The Washington Post)

"Few stand out quite like Shantaram …nothing if not entertaining. Sometimes a big story is its own best reward." (The New York Times)

Outstanding!

From NY Times, by Megan O’Grady (December 26, 2004): “At a time when stories have never seemed more disposable, to find a narrative that merits all that time and paper feels -- in a word -- gratifying.”

That’s exactly how I felt, while reading this book (this year I have read to date 160 books, not including 17 that I couldn’t finish, and the majority was totally disposable and forgettable. I did find 22 gems that I rated 5 stars, but lately I wasn’t so lucky).

Shantaram is a work of fiction, loosely based on the author’s life, an armed robber and a heroin addict from Australia, who escaped prison and went to live in Bombay, India, where he becomes involved with the underworld life, full of crimes, corruptions and drugs.

The author wrote this novel in 5 parts. There are 42 chapters.

This is a massive book of 936 pages, with a total word count of 383k. The audiobook is narrated by Humphrey Bower, who did a great job (except when playing a female character).

The writing is wonderful, very descriptive but some times repetitive. Regardless, I did not have a moment of boredom, because I was seeing and feeling everything through his eyes, as if I was living in that moment.

The characters are unforgettable, and the protagonist showed me that a criminal also has a heart.

I will forever miss Prabaker, a simple tour guide, living in the streets of Bombay, who finds happiness in the littlest of things in life. I will miss his relentless optimism and his unconditional loyalty. Prabhaker chose to see the best in people, which we often fail to do.

There are several heartbreaking moments.

There was an event that left me so devastated that I did not want to continue reading.

Anyways…

I had this book sitting on my shelves, since its release. I was a bit discouraged by its size and small font, plus by the mixed reviews.

After watching the first 3 episodes of the recent adaptation for the TV, I felt motivated to read this book. As soon as I started reading I was completely hooked.

It’s a lot better than the TV series. The structure in the adaptation is very different.

After 32% in the book I decided to purchase the audiobook, to play it as I read (I also purchased the ebook, which was on sale, as it is a lot easier to read while riding the bus or subway).

Yes, I loved this book and it’s going to be added to my list as one of my top 10 favourite books of this year. Unfortunately it did not take the crown from “A Fine Balance”, by Rohinton Mistry, as my number one favourite book of all times.

PS. There is a follow up, but it can be read as a standalone: The Mountain Shadow, also over 900 pages.

I'm sad it's over

Where do I start? I loved every bit of this book. The story, the narrator, the main character. I'm so sad it's over. I hope they have the same narrator do the 2nd book.

Minor technical incongruencies on the phone App.

When the narrator announces the chapter number it's different by one from the chapter number displayed on the App. It makes it hard to find my place again when I fall asleep listening to it. The story is fantastic, however. It's expertly narrated, swiftly paced, lavishly descriptive, unpredictably gritty and consistently thought-provoking.

Epic tale

The voice actor is superb. He nails all the accents and inflection of emotion to sweep the listener up in the story.

Enthralling. Excellent.

This book is one of those that leaves you wanting more. Extremely hard to put down. Only one section in the final third of the book is somewhat more difficult to get through, but Injust increased the speed in this part. Afterwards, the book goes back to its greatness and ends very strong.

The descriptions are done beautifully, and the emotions the narrator feels, you feel as well. Additionally, the narrator did an absolutely phenomenal job, which every character being u iquely distinct.

Memorable

A story that lives with you for a long time.

This saga will have you laugh, cry, be in shock, feel wonder, heartache, fear, loss, pain - it's full of beautiful thoughts and mesmerizing images. Critically, the author is full of himself - but thankfully, his ego does not overshadow the incredible story. It's worth a listen, and it's a story that I will think about often.
