Hailed as the finest combat aviation novel to emerge from the Vietnam War, Flight of the Intruder spent 28 weeks on the New York Times hardcover best-seller list and became one of the top-20 best-selling first novels of all time. An instant classic, the book was translated into more than 20 languages and made into a major motion picture. Its hero, Jake Grafton, became a household name and the star of many more Coonts’ best-sellers. Without question, the strength of the book lies in its flying scenes when Jake Grafton straps himself into the cockpit of his A-6 Intruder.

This is the book that dares to show us the military hardware, global upheavals, and raw combat a second Korean War would unleash. How F-16s would blast across the 38th Parallel. How ultra-modern submarines would vie for the seas. And how two armies would turn the snowfields of Asia red with blood. A thundering geopolitical thriller of vast scope, this is Red Phoenix - and a new standard for military/political suspense fiction.

For a moment Wilson froze and looked at the white-helmeted pilot who sat high on the nose of the colossal fighter. Across the small void, he saw the pilot's eyes peer over his mask. Dark, chilling eyes. Wilson kicked right rudder to slide closer and jam any chance for a bandit gunshot. When the bandit pulled all the way over, almost on its back but in control, he cursed in frustration at what he knew was coming next.

Description
When Muslim fundamentalists blow up a key Soviet oil complex, making an already critical oil shortage calamitous, the Russians figure they are going to have to take things into their own hands. They plan to seize the Persian Gulf, and more ambitiously, to neutralize NATO. Thus begins Red Storm, an audacious gamble that uses diplomatic maneuver to cloak a crash military build-up. When Soviet tanks begin to roll, the West is caught off guard. What looks like a thrust turns into an all-out shooting war, possibly the climactic battle for control of the globe.

Middling Military Fiction
Prichard's voice works wonderfully for this one. Well-read.
As for the story: it's an interesting read as an alt-history (though it was written as near-future extrapolation), but it's both too sprawling and too focused to excel. Meaning: the story is so broad in its aspirational scope (a full-out World War 3 between NATO and the USSR) that the reader can't help but feel shortchanged when it doesn't live up to it (for example, an all-encompassing World War should involve the World - rather than just Iceland, Germany, and the North Atlantic); and the decision to anchor this tale to the perspectives of a few figures in the three military theaters emphasizes this shortcoming. Thin characters don't help, but I suppose we're not really coming to Tom Clancy for deep meditations on humanity's nature.
Enjoyable, but not as good as his later work, and not something I'd return to.

Classic and hard to beat
Great book! Will be listening to again at some point love Tom Clancy’s books hard to beat in my opinion. It’s amazing how well Tom Clancy predicted certain aspects of how a Soviet style attack on western style forces would play out. This book is constantly referenced by commentators on the war in Ukraine and it’s pretty dead on. Recommended listening!!

Detail, plots, twists, turns, great characters!
What else would you expect? Typical Tom Clancy level of knowledge and detail...astounding!! His knowledge of terms, tactics, politics, equipment and behaviour is staggering and you can't listen without being in absolute awe of how much work he puts into his books.
This one has lots of suspense and lots of amazing resolutions. No end left untied and all story lines concluded. Pretty incredible.
If you like submarines, planes, underdogs who pull off amazing feats and cold war politics, you'll love it.
