Imagine you could travel back to the 14th century. What would you see? What would you smell? More to the point, where are you going to stay? And what are you going to eat? Ian Mortimer shows us that the past is not just something to be studied; it is also something to be lived. He sets out to explain what life was like in the most immediate way, through taking you to the Middle Ages. The result is the most astonishing social history book you are ever likely to read: evolutionary in its concept, informative and entertaining in its detail.

It was to be the war to end all wars, and it began at 11:15 on the morning of June 28, 1914, in an outpost of the Austro-Hungarian Empire called Sarajevo. It would officially end nearly five years later. Unofficially, however, it has never ended: Many of the horrors we live with today are rooted in the First World War. The Great War left millions of civilians and soldiers maimed or dead. It also saw the creation of new technologies of destruction: tanks, planes, and submarines; machine guns and field artillery; poison gas and chemical warfare.

This Pulitzer Prize-winning history of World War II chronicles the dramatic rise and fall of the Japanese empire, from the invasion of Manchuria and China to the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Alexander was born into the royal family of Macedonia, the kingdom that would soon rule over Greece. Tutored as a boy by Aristotle, Alexander had an inquisitive mind that would serve him well when he faced formidable obstacles during his military campaigns. Shortly after taking command of the army, he launched an invasion of the Persian Empire, and continued his conquests as far south as the deserts of Egypt and as far east as the mountains of present-day Pakistan and the plains of India.

In this Pulitzer Prize-winning classic, historian Barbara Tuchman brings to life the people and events that led up to World War I. This was the last gasp of the Gilded Age, of Kings and Kaisers and Czars, of pointed or plumed hats, colored uniforms, and all the pomp and romance that went along with war. How quickly it all changed...and how horrible it became.

Here in a single volume is the entire, unabridged recording of Gibbon's masterpiece. Beginning in the second century A.D. at the apex of the Pax Romana, Gibbon traces the arc of decline and complete destruction through the centuries across Europe and the Mediterranean. It is a thrilling and cautionary tale of splendor and ruin, of faith and hubris, and of civilization and barbarism. Follow along as Christianity overcomes paganism... before itself coming under intense pressure from Islam.

As one of the most potent turning points in the country's modern history, the Opium War has since come to stand for everything that today's China seeks to put behind it. In this dramatic, epic story, award-winning historian Stephen Platt sheds new light on the early attempts by Western traders and missionaries to "open" China even as China's imperial rulers were struggling to manage their country's decline and Confucian scholars grappled with how to use foreign trade to China's advantage.

Description
A lively and engaging narrative history showing the common threads in the cultures that gave birth to our own.
This is the first volume in a bold new series that tells the stories of all peoples, connecting historical events from Europe to the Middle East to the far coast of China, while still giving weight to the characteristics of each country. Susan Wise Bauer provides both sweeping scope and vivid attention to the individual lives that give flesh to abstract assertions about human history. This narrative history employs the methods of "history from beneath" - literature, epic traditions, private letters, and accounts - to connect kings and leaders with the lives of those they ruled. The result is an engrossing tapestry of human behavior from which we may draw conclusions about the direction of world events and the causes behind them.

Iffy narration, abrupt ending
This is old school history - names, dates, places. Not a lot of synthesis and so what, absolutely no cultural or material history if that's what you're looking for. Major blindspots (Aristotle isn't even mentioned I don't think), and the narration feels rather forced. Nice that it includes eastern history, but very hard to follow it.

Great primer for those new to the topics.
Thoroughly enjoyed. Well paced and concise given the massive timeframe covered in the book. I found the pacing and detail level to be solid. Very great format for covering large periods of time where there isn't much evidence other than an odd artifact or conjecture.
As the book progressed and the complexity of the ancient world evolved it became more difficult to keep up the pace the book had while still covering each event thoroughly.
I also felt it may have been better to just exclude the content related to the rise of China. It felt like an afterthought much of the time and the lack of intermingling between the world's meant it didn't add much context to the other chapters of the book. if the author had spent equal time on both histories it could have been a fascinating exploration of development across time in two locales but the dots just didn't connect in my head.
This was also a fantastic way to identify people or time periods I would like to explore further. I will be getting her book on the Medieval World with my credit next month.

Ancient History
Anyone wanting to learn about history through the ages should listen to this book. I am struck by the violence that litters our past as countries rose up to become their own. The privilege of hindsight is something that we could all learn from. History continues to repeat itself as violence over power, land, and religion still dominate our existence.

There is so much more to history than war.
According to this author there is nothing in our collective past other than rulers, killing and conquering every city on the planet. This is exactly what is wrong with”history” that we teach our children and were “taught “ at school. Pathetic and sad piece of work.
