Description

Deuce’s whole world has changed. Down below, she was considered an adult. Now, topside in a town called Salvation, she’s a brat in need of training in the eyes of the townsfolk. She doesn’t fit in with the other girls: Deuce only knows how to fight. To make matters worse, her Hunter partner, Fade, keeps Deuce at a distance. Her feelings for Fade haven’t changed, but he seems not to want her around anymore. Confused and lonely, she starts looking for a way out.

Deuce signs up to serve in the summer patrols - those who make sure the planters can work the fields without danger. It should be routine, but things have been changing on the surface, just as they did below ground.

The Freaks have grown smarter. They’re watching. Waiting. Planning. The monsters don’t intend to let Salvation survive, and it may take a girl like Deuce to turn back the tide.

Loved the First Book, This One is Even Better!

Outpost is action from start to finish. This book does not have a dull moment. There is a love triangle, zombie-like creatures, and family dynamics, to name a few elements. The narrator was good, but the accents were a little inconsistent. At one point they sound like they are from Boston, the next like they are from the South. But that is a small complaint because overall it was great. The hard part is now waiting for the third book, Horde, to come out!

Narrator Bad // Book So-So

There are so many great reviews for this book and I feel kinda alone on this one so bare with me. Outpost had great potential, and there are times it really lived up to it, and times I wanted to fast forward. Once I was at the middle of this book it was a little bit...ummm...boring? I don't know it just wasn't what I expected.

Seeing that Deuce lived underground in a society that made up it's own rules and brainwashed it's people I was excited to see her paradigm shift. It felt as though it was going to be reminiscent of Plateo's "The Cave." It wasn't. The most she wondered about was why you celebrated birthdays and "who says I cant wear pants!" All of her "paradigm shifts" were quite shallow.

Romance is weak and there is a pointless love triangle once again.

The book starts to redeem itself towards the end and leaves you with quite the cliffhanger. I think the final installment in this series has the setup to be the best yet. Here's to hoping!

OH! Most importantly the narrator is bad. I honestly wonder if I would have felt completely different about this book had I read it instead...

Continues the Story Well

This was an interesting read and continued the story from the first book well. Characters grow and change - and there are a lot of parallels to Peeta and Katniss from Hunger Games in terms of characterization (strong female, strong but failing male, sacrifice). Themes that were only touched upon in the first novel are now explored more in depth in the wide open world above ground.

I especially liked that there weren't black and white character or moustache twirler villains. And the situation for the main characters continues to deteriorate, leading to a very action packed and suspenseful ending (fortunately, not a cliff hanger).

I'm looking forward to the next book!

Addictive.

I read Enclave on the Kindle in a few days and could not wait to get into Outpost.

This is a really well-written series that ties you to the characters and lets you feel the world through their skin. I am claustrophobic, but was terrified by all of the space Deuce encounters during this next part of her journey. I love it when a book takes over your reality and makes the world within the book too real for comfort.

There were some long stretches of inactivity during Outbreak. However, they did not bore me. Rather, I enjoyed pausing the action a bit to explore the characters more. It was definitely not as fast paced as Enclave, but the constant outward battles of the first book gave way to more internal battles in the second.

I also like how the author wraps up each novel, but sets you up for more. It makes it easier to wait for the next book.

Highly recommended and looking forward to part three in October!

A "Bodice Ripper" wrapped in a "Body Slasher"

This novel is fast paced and full of great imagery of the strong and courageous Deuce and her 2 beaus. Not too lengthy, just the right amount of gory, bloody fight scenes and intertwined with those, the somewhat victorian love story. If you think about it; In those days, they did have to often fight in hand-to-hand combat too, vs. today's WMDs.

I am, at the moment, really into the current wave of post-apocalyptic drama. I just consume them as fast as they come out, mixing flavors, if they are any good... as many of them have turned out to be. I read Enclave, then Angelfall, then Outpost. For me it turned out to be the perfect complement of ernest dramedy and satire/comedy. That was great fun and entertainment; just what I needed.

I am not giving 'Outpost' the full 5 stars, because I don't think it deserves the 5, due to the fact that I found several of the inner monologues too long, boring. I also did not find it as innovative as others of it's kind, even though it has the potential. There is a lot of basically phantasy stuff that the reader just has to accept.

Overall recommended as enjoyable entertainment.

Second Book in a Series Syndrome

If it looks like a duck and acts like a duck, then it must be a . . . well Outpost is the second book of a series and it acts just like one!
Outpost is repetitive - for the reader who did not bother with Enclave it must be great, for me - not so much.
Outpost also ended like the second book of a series - push me out to the edge and leave me there hanging, for me - too painful.
And for me, a sap, I'm not happy when you mess with relationships that need not be messed with.

So, I give Outpost a 3.5...

A Great Dystopian Book Full Of Action (Book 2)

If you could sum up Outpost in three words, what would they be?

Action, Love, Family

What other book might you compare Outpost to and why?

Its similar to Delirium, Matched, Divergent, Chemical Garden, & Hunger Games.
Mostly just because its a female main character and has a lot of action and is set in the future.

Which scene was your favorite?

I liked the siege on the outpost scene. A lot of fighting.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It's not really a funny book. More sad at times. No main reaction. But I did love the book!

Any additional comments?

I wanted to listen to this audio book all in 1 day. It was that good! I enjoy this author because unlike the other book above, the main character that is a girl isn't portrayed as being dumb. I never understood why female authors portray the female characters as stupid. This girl is strong and smart!

Painful

This book is soooo hard to get through. The first one was ok, this one is terrible. It sounds like it’s written by a lovesick teenager. The first book was action with a hint of romance, this one is a romance splattered with blood. The only reason I waded through it was because the concept was intriguing. This story should have been outsourced to a much better author. What a waste of time.
