A middle-aged man returns to his childhood home to attend a funeral. He is drawn to the farm at the end of the road, where, when he was seven, he encountered a most remarkable girl, Lettie Hempstock. Forty years earlier, a man committed suicide in a stolen car at this farm at the end of the road. Like a fuse on a firework, his death lit a touchpaper and resonated in unimaginable ways. The darkness was unleashed, something scary and thoroughly incomprehensible to a little boy. And Lettie - magical, comforting, wise beyond her years - promised to protect him, no matter what.

Amid the dizzying rides, tantalizing games of chance, and fanciful attractions of a state fair, two teenage sweethearts on the cusp of life and love's pleasures find their way to a shadowy carnival tent brimming with curiosities. There, from the bizarre and enthralling Gypsy Mummy, a mechanized merchant of dreams and prognosticator of tomorrows, the young couple learns what fate promises for them. Meet the Dog Who Will Show the World How to Be Human
The New York Times best-selling novel from Garth Stein - a heart-wrenching but deeply funny and ultimately uplifting story of family, love, loyalty, and hope - a captivating look at the wonders and absurdities of human life...as only a dog could tell it.
"Splendid." (People)
"The perfect book for anyone who knows that compassion isn’t only for humans, and that the relationship between two souls who are meant for each other never really comes to an end. Every now and then I'm lucky enough to read a novel I can’t stop thinking about: this is one of them." (Jodi Picoult)
"It's impossible not to love Enzo." (Minneapolis Star Tribune)
"This old soul of a dog has much to teach us about being human. I loved this book." (Sara Gruen)

Really good
Honestly, I read reviews that said they had cried and I didn't think I would relate. Afterall, you know Enzo is going to die from the very begining of the story. However, the repetition of driving phrases throughout the story as a way to relate it to life was amazing. Enzo teaches us that our life is a race track and the rain, or our issues, are an extension of us, not us as a whole. The metaphores in this book were easy to read and beautifully written. I chose this book for a school assignment am I'm glad I did. I bawled my eyes out at the end.
This story went in so many different directions that it terrified me with what could happen. I was not expecting such heart wrenching scenes tbat would actually leave me feeling hollow.
Thank you for your beautiful story Stein.

Great book, great reading by the narrator
I really enjoyed this book. However, nobody warned me it's a tear jerker, and it is certainly that. The only thing I didn't like was the periodic music interludes that presumably broke the chapters up into groups? I don't know, I don't understand why the interludes are there. It's not necessary and a bit irritating. Great novel and wonderful narration.

WOW IT'S GREAT
Great book if you love your dog and a great story then this is your book. It's a great ride with ups and downs to the end. Honestly I was so angry 😡 at one of the characters that I stopped listening for two days but I did finish and now I'm half way through a second time.
