Description

Between his work on the 2014 Audible Audiobook of the Year, Hamlet, Prince of Denmark: A Novel, and his performance of Classic Love Poems, narrator Richard Armitage (The Hobbit, Hannibal) has quickly become a listener favorite. Now, in this defining performance of Charles Dickens' classic David Copperfield, Armitage lends his unique voice and interpretation, truly inhabiting each character and bringing real energy to the life of one of Dickens' most famous characters.

This epic, exuberant novel is one of the greatest coming-of-age stories in literature, chronicling David Copperfield's extraordinary journey through life as he encounters villains, saviors, eccentrics, and grotesques - including the wicked Mr. Murdstone, stouthearted Peggotty, formidable Betsey Trotwood, impecunious Micawber, and the odious Uriah Heep. Dickens' great novel (based, in part, on his own boyhood and which he described as a "favorite child") is a work filled with life, both comic and tragic.

Listen to Richard Armitage bring Dickens' words to life, and you'll understand why Virginia Woolf called David Copperfield "the most perfect of all the Dickens novels".

A classic worth savouring

This is a classic amongst classics, and highly enjoyable if one takes the time to savour the words, the story, the characters. It’s well worth reading / listening to. Every sentence is so cleverly crafted by Dickens. His unique insights of human nature translates to practically a quotable quote in every episode.

While many may think of David Copperfield as a book which recounts his childhood hardships, there is so much more. There are many light moments, even hilarious ones, and I found myself chuckling at Dickens’s wit and many astute observations. David Copperfield’s struggles and determination to make a better future for himself could be a source of encouragement and inspiration, even today.

Richard Armitage’s reading brought to life this classic.

Excellent

This is a classic tale from Charles Dickens. Poor boy fighting his way through the world, meeting people and living his life the best way he can. Richard Armitage is an excellent narrator. His changes in character, accent, etc., is wonderful. He really brings the individual characters to life in such a way as to create images in the listener's mind as to what the character looks like and acts like.

Vanilla

Sorry to say; very boring and lackluster.
I really hoped it would be something interesting just by the title's name recognition, however it wasn't.

Riveting!

I have only read a few books by Dickens and that was when I was in high school many years ago. I was amazed at how David Copperfield took over my life! I couldn’t put it down. The story is wonderful and each chapter ends as a page-turner. It is very easy to understand that this book was serialized before it was published as a novel. The characters are unforgettable and the narration by Richard Armitage is perfect. It’s one of those books that leave you with a sense of loss when it is finished.

Absolutely brilliant

Absolutely brilliant narration by Richard Armitage. I never realized what a good actor he was, until I heard him doing all the accents and characters in this long novel. I read the book in high school and obviously didn’t fully appreciate it. It is full of compassion and Humira and drama. So glad I chose this audiobook.

Bringing a classic to life

Richard Armitage does a masterful job of breathing life into this nearly 200 year old tale. Creating a separate voice for each character within the story helps the listener build an image of the entire ensemble. The pacing is spot-on, and spoken with such emotion that you cheer for Copperfield's victories or weep for his heartbreaking loses.

A small technical note: there are times throughout the recording when you can tell that Armitage re-recorded a few passages of the book as it "sounds" different. But those are few and far apart to be merely a minor distraction.

What a performance!

If I could give higher marks for the performance I would. The broad range of characters were all voiced to perfection. Some were quite hilarious (the elder Spenlow sisters!).

The story is typical Dickens grand storytelling. I listen to audiobooks while I work (as a painter) and this riveting book kept me tethered to my easel for many long hours.

A PERFECT narration of an English classic!

I find Charles Dickens' novels difficult to read because of his sentence structure and length. Reading David Copperfield was especially difficult for me due to the length of the novel, but the story is so worthwhile that the effort is rewarded.

I listened to this Audible version one or two chapters a day over several weeks. Richard Armitage does an incredible job of narration especially with the character's voices. Listening to him is a joy. There are many excellent narrators of audio books, but the consistent quality of Armitage's work of over 36 hours of David Copperfield ranks this as the best narrated audio book I have ever listened to. It is a classic narration of an English classic novel.

This narration of David Copperfield by Richard Armitage has my HIGHEST POSSIBLE RECOMMENDATION. Even if you have previously read the book and maybe especially if you have not read David Copperfield, you will enjoy this audio book.

Yes, they way he reads, the tones, the inflections, the voice changes is just brilliant..

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I almost did, but I needed to sleep...

Classic Story with Superb Performance.

What made the experience of listening to David Copperfield [Audible Studios] the most enjoyable?

Richard Armitage's voice was incredible. He brought this book to a new life. His beautiful inflections and characterizations were spot on.

Any additional comments?

You've either read David Copperfield and want to know if it is worth the listen, or you are new to this work. Be not hesitant, this is one of the best performances on Audible. And David Copperfield is just classic. Dicken's has a definite style to him. He's studied for a reason, and that reason is damned good writing. Spend the credit... you'll be cultured as well as entertained.

Procrastination is the thief of time...

“I know enough of the world now to have almost lost the capacity of being much surprised by anything”
― Charles Dickens, David Copperfield

'David Copperfield' contains more saints per capita than any beatified book by Butler. Dickens is amazing in his ability to be both grand and personal. David Copperfield is sprawling, with dozens of threads that weave around David Copperfield's youth and adulthood. IT is amazing not only how he can transform a character through time, but also show that our perceptions of those same characters are drawn often from imperfect information and overly simple assumptions. Yes, there are parts of 'David Copperfield' that float between the melodramatic and the grotesque, but one doesn't read Dickens for the unmoving, normal or embellished. There are a handful of novels that I would consider to be the literary equivalent of scripture: 'Les Miserables', 'the Idiot', 'Anna Karenina', and for sure 'David Copperfield'.

There are several moments in 'David Copperfield' when, as a reader, you recognize you will never be half the writer Dickens was (on deadline). He might just be second to Shakespeare in my book, or at least be among a small cadre of writers that belong on the silver pedestal below the Bard.

This isn't as technically perfect as 'Great Expectations', but it is top tier Dickens for sure. A massive novel that floats with the weight of a beach read half its size. If you are going to read a Dickens, this might not be your first stop, but it shouldn't be far from your second.

Absolutely spot-on perfect!!!!

I have read David Copperfield at least three times over the years, along with most of Dickens, and my love of Dickens led me to Wilkie Collins...what I'm trying to say is that I'm a huge enthusiast of the author as well as this story and allow me to assure you; THIS is an absolutely AMAZING narrator who brings each individual character to life, whether it's a middle aged aunt with a starchy Scottish brogue, a creepy villian, be he ever so 'umble, a sweet young lady, or a sensitive man recalling his childhood. This production is transporting.

Brilliant

Where does David Copperfield rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

First.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Mr. Dick, friend to David's Aunt Betsey Trotwood, is my favourite character. I love how he sees people and situations clearly and easily cuts through the confusion of emotion, bigotry and ignorance. And I like how Miss Betsey accepts his word without question.

Have you listened to any of Richard Armitage’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I've listened to all of Richard Armitage's performances. This is, in my opinion, his best. (With Hamlet a close second.)

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The scene when Mr. Barkis dies and Peggoty is left bereft, and later when Miss Emily runs away with Steerforth, are both powerful scenes. I also love how David's infatuation for Dora develops. David's remembrance of it is hilarious.

Any additional comments?

This is a gift from Literature Heaven: David Copperfield, read by Richard Armitage. Richard's various voices give a rich depth to the characters that you simply don't get when you read the book in print. It's a 36-hour bedtime story-telling extravaganza by, in my opinion, the best narrator of our time. I hope audible hires him again and again and again.

WOW. A fantastic reading of a deserving classic.

A story that deserves high praise. Happy, sad, love, loss and the vivid villains. A reading that left me sitting in the car after I arrived.

I look forward to listening to this again.

I enjoyed this as much as the Ian McKellen reading of Homer.

A wonderful journey with Charles Dickens through the voice of Richard Armitage

I have just bid a sad farewell, for now, to some of my favorite and most colorful literary characters, David "Trotwood" Copperfield, Betsy Trotwood, Mr. Dick, Mr. Micowber, and Mr. Pegarty, to name a few, within one of my best-loved stories, David Copperfield, written by one of my most esteemed authors, Charles Dickens, and portrayed brilliantly by one of my favorite actors, Richard Armitage. Narrating such an epic, well-known, and much beloved story is no small accomplishment, even when multiple actors and actresses lend their voice talents to the telling of the tale. In this Audible presentation, Richard Armitage has done great honor to Mr. Dickens, his story, and his characters through his faithful and delightful vocal characterizations of every character, his perfect turn of complex Victorian phrasing, and his ability to bound tightly the heart, hopes and fears of the listener to those of the characters through his own clear emotional connection to them and sense of responsibility to them. Mr. Dicken's story, as told through Mr. Armitage's narration, captured and held fast this listener's attention from start to finish, bringing the story and characters into the fullness of life within my imagination to the extent that I feel almost as if I had been a devoted friend and fellow traveller in their journey. I hope that I can look forward to enjoying many more great author's stories with
Mr. Armitage as narrator!

Sincerely,

Michaelene Mossbrucker

Extraordinary. Richard Armitage is a revelation.

This is the definitive narration of David Copperfield. Richard Armitage gives each character more than a voice--he introduces readers to their identities. This wasn't my first forage into Dickens, and it won't be my last; and it certainly won't be my last Armitage audiobook. Thirty-six hours may seem daunting, but they fly by thanks to a classic and deserving story, and one of the best performers Audible has managed to engage. Armitage has made this novel one of my favorite books. If, for some reason, you're struggling to decide whether or not to buy this book, stop thinking, and just click 'Add to Cart'.
