Its famous opening line, "Call me Ishmael", dramatic in its stark simplicity, begins an epic that is widely regarded as the greatest novel ever written by an American. Labeled variously a realistic story of whaling, a romance of unusual adventure and eccentric characters, a symbolic allegory, and a drama of heroic conflict, Moby Dick is first and foremost a great story. It has both the humor and poignancy of a simple sea ballad, as well as the depth and universality of a grand odyssey.
When Melville's father died in 1832, the young man's financial security went too. For a while he turned to school-mastering and clerking, but failed to make a sustainable income. In 1840 he signed up on the whaler, Acushnet, out of New Bedford, Massachusetts. He was just 21. A whaler's life turned out to be both arduous and dangerous, and in 1842, Melville deserted ship. Out of this experience and a wealth of printed sources, Melville crafted his masterpiece.

Great classic, excellent narrator.
Excellent narrator. If you're going to listen to Moby Dick, I can't imagine a better person to listen to than Frank Muller.

best old timey ship story and narrated beautifully
so incredibly funny, and honestly you feel like you're there. you feel part of the crew.

I was captured by this tale
I knew Moby Dick was about a giant white whale with somewhat of a malicious nature. But the written work like most books was so much more. Selected crew members explained poetically in detail. The bond made between Ishmael and Queqeg. Captain Ahabs dead reckoning of his pursuit on Moby Dick. I felt like I was standing on the decks of the ship a part of the crew. Holding a line or swabbing the decks. The narrator Frank Muller assigned me my role as deckhand and I thank him for doing so.

Expected more from the Story
First off, I don't know who Frank Muller is but my goodness the man can read a book! I enjoyed this from beginning to end but doubt I could have read the damn thing without skipping vast swaths of pages. There's more time dedicated to the differences in whale types then there is of Moby Dick. But Muller is able to capture the prose and pace of Mellville's writing like I've never experienced. Wonderful use of language. One must steal yourself though and be braced for the cruelty inflicted on these wonderful creatures. I found it challenging, at times, to remind myself of the context.
All and all, I'm pleased I choose this audible to tick a big box in my long bucket list of must-reads.

Wow
This book, holy shit. Although quite drawn out and many slow chapters, it's worth it to hear the final two hours of very intense, masterful, poetic story telling.
Frank Muller is spectacular reading this.

A whale of a tale
