fascinating ghost story

I loved everything about this book. If it were a movie, it would be horrifying (ghosts, murderers, murder, torture, posession, and creepy dolls). As a book, it is surprisingly sympathetic. The narrator is a vengeful spirit who manages to capture the reader's heart

“Well” done!

A gripping story with some enjoyable looks into Japanese culture. The odd name choices initially threw me off but I enjoyed the progression of both the story and the characters.

A very good listen

Its not an action packed book but the the story and characters are very interesting. I personally really enjoyed the slower pace of it, letting me get invested in the characters.

Surprisingly Good

It’s not often that I listen to a book in 2 days, however I ploughed through this book!
For a free download it was well worth it, I think I will check out what else the author Ron Chupeco has done!

A delightful narration of a culturally rich story

I loved this book. The narrator did an amazing job personifying the characters especially the ghost. The story itself was very interesting albeit a bit confusing at points but the poignant narration made up for that in sucking me deep into the story.

Exceptionally Spooky

Second time listening to this wonderful story, and I'm just as enchanted the second go around. Spooky and heartfelt, this book will give readers hair-raising chills. It will also make them laugh and cry.

A tad overdone subject made great by fantastic writing

The narrator was fantastic and really kept me entranced in the storytelling. I can’t really think of anything else to say as I think they did such a perfect job.

As for the story itself, I absolutely loved Rin Chupeco’s Bone Witch trilogy. When another option came up to listen to one of their books, I certainly looked forward to it. I was a bit dismayed as the story went on, since yurei has been done so often. However, Rin acknowledges this and puts their own twist on it by making the ghost into the protagonist. The author also has a wonderful knack for making such a compelling story and excruciatingly gruesome depictions of ghastly gore, without being so over the top it becomes boring or corny. The pacing does get a bit boring, and some elements are so common that you can see them coming from far away. This is ultimately due to pop culture exposure, because Rin stays faithful to actual cultural roots and practices that the stereotypes have been based on. Overall, I highly recommend this.

Creepy, Sweet, and Emotional

Another delightfully creepy edition to this series, I found the sequel to THE GIRL FROM THE WELL to be more intense, more emotional, and a more engaging ghost story.

With Tark as the sole narrator, the plot was much easier to follow. While it did still take a bit to get to the meat of the plot, the initial chapters focused mainly on the interaction of Tark and Okiko.

Their bond is a complex, but sweet one. I really appreciated their relationship as Tark tried to connect with this ancient ghost girl.

The setting and atmosphere are as delightfully creepy as the previous books. While the story does have dark elements and disturbing themes, I found it compelling and heart-wrenching. As for the ending, it is just what I wanted and hoped for.

I’ve really enjoyed reading this duology. If you are a fan of creepy, sad ghost stories, definitely check this one out!

The Girl From The Well

Overall a light read. I liked the whole hunting child killers down and paying them in kind. I wish there was a bit more differentiation between the various characters and their voices. Maybe this is a facet of the audiobook performance, but there seemed to be many moments where I couldn't tell which character was speaking. I also have a minor issue with the perspective. The novel starts from the perspective of a ghost, but there are times she doesn't seem to be present but narrates anyway, or describes other character's thoughts and emotions as though she is omniscient. It put me out of the story a bit. I did appreciate the perspective of experiencing betrayal and murder and becoming a vengeful ghost as a result...and then not being able to move on to the next realm. It says a lot about forgiveness and justice. I look forward to the sequel.
