Description

Instant New York Times best-seller. A New York Times notable book of 2018. One of The Economist's books of the year.

"My new favorite book of all time." (Bill Gates)

If you think the world is coming to an end, think again: People are living longer, healthier, freer, and happier lives, and while our problems are formidable, the solutions lie in the Enlightenment ideal of using reason and science.

Is the world really falling apart? Is the ideal of progress obsolete? In this elegant assessment of the human condition in the third millennium, cognitive scientist and public intellectual Steven Pinker urges us to step back from the gory headlines and prophecies of doom, which play to our psychological biases. Instead, follow the data: In seventy-five jaw-dropping graphs, Pinker shows that life, health, prosperity, safety, peace, knowledge, and happiness are on the rise, not just in the West, but worldwide. This progress is not the result of some cosmic force. It is a gift of the Enlightenment: the conviction that reason and science can enhance human flourishing.

Far from being a naïve hope, the Enlightenment, we now know, has worked. But more than ever, it needs a vigorous defense. The Enlightenment project swims against currents of human nature--tribalism, authoritarianism, demonization, magical thinking--which demagogues are all too willing to exploit. Many commentators, committed to political, religious, or romantic ideologies, fight a rearguard action against it. The result is a corrosive fatalism and a willingness to wreck the precious institutions of liberal democracy and global cooperation.

With intellectual depth and literary flair, Enlightenment Now makes the case for reason, science, and humanism: the ideals we need to confront our problems and continue our progress.

Well worth a listen...

I really enjoyed Pinker's book. Well written and a great way to combat the endless stream of bad news that seems to hit us each day.

Maybe there is hope

A great book to counter all the pessimism out there. Maybe humanity isn't failing at everything.

I don’t say this often; must read.

This is probably not the best book I’ve read, but it is pretty good and the message is so important right now. I would recommend anyone and everyone read this book, the sooner the better. It is filled with data and facts about the world we live in, and much of it, turns out, is positive and encouraging. At a time when there is so much negativity and gloom, this books shines a light on all the good in the world and reminds us, objectively and scientifically, that there is a lot more good things happening all around us than social media and the news would have us believe.

A Healthy Cure for Stress and Depression

#Audible1
Too many people today are victims of fear, stress and depression. I've always been suspicious of misery and its causes which I've suspected originate in ignorance. Reading Steven Pinker's view of human "progress" through history, bolstered my optimism with masses of statistical evidence proving how much healthier, safer, fortunate and happier we are.

The problem many people suffer is their tendency to drown in the torrent of hair-raising and despicable negativity generated by media - whose only objective is to make a buck on the gullibility of the masses. As long as you engage your critical thinking when exposed to our ubiquitous diet of pessimism, your knowledge that "it ain't necessarily so" will protect you from succumbing to our otherwise 'fear-and-loathing' permeated culture.

In short, this is an inspiring book which sanctions your revelry in solid viewpoints about our origins, journey and accomplishments. It gives you much to ponder, discuss and best of all, comforts you from wretched opinions you encounter daily.

Read the whole thing, you'll never regret a moment of it!

Brilliant, logical, and unbiased

First, I admit to being a Stephen Pinker and Hans Rosling fangirl. I found this book to be riveting. I walk 50 minutes to work and 50 minutes home and the time flew! I confess to being completely engrossed to the point that I would have no recollection of the walk itself - only the narrative. Granted, in my case it was preaching to the converted, but it armed me with data, information, and context that I would not otherwise have to be able to debate some of these topics intellectually and objectively.

Multidisciplinary magic

The author lays out such a coherent set of arguments for humanism that the world would really benefit from each person who opens themselves up to being convinced.
