Description

From entrepreneur Andrew Yang, the founder of Venture for America, an eye-opening look at how new technologies are erasing millions of jobs before our eyes - and a rallying cry for the urgent steps America must take, including Universal Basic Income, to stabilize our economy.

The shift toward automation is about to create a tsunami of unemployment. Not in the distant future - now. One recent estimate predicts 13 million American workers will lose their jobs within the next seven years - jobs that won't be replaced. In a future marked by restlessness and chronic unemployment, what will happen to American society?

In The War on Normal People, Andrew Yang paints a dire portrait of the American economy. Rapidly advancing technologies like artificial intelligence, robotics, and automation software are making millions of Americans' livelihoods irrelevant. The consequences of these trends are already being felt across our communities in the form of political unrest, drug use, and other social ills. The future looks dire - but is it unavoidable?

In The War on Normal People, Yang imagines a different future - one in which having a job is distinct from the capacity to prosper and seek fulfillment. At this vision's core is Universal Basic Income, the concept of providing all citizens with a guaranteed income - and one that is rapidly gaining popularity among forward-thinking politicians and economists. Yang proposes that UBI is an essential step toward a new, more durable kind of economy, one he calls "human capitalism."

Ce que les critiques en disent

"In this powerful book, Andrew Yang highlights the urgent need to rewrite America's social contract. In a call to arms that comes from both head and heart, Yang has made an important contribution to the debate about where America is headed and what we need to do about it." (Alec Ross, New York Times best-selling author of The Industries of the Future)

"This book is a must read. Andrew Yang is tackling one of the biggest challenges facing our country the way only an entrepreneur can, but unlike most, he sees the big picture. Making money is good for you - but building a strong society and strong people is good for all of us. The topics Andrew addresses in this book aren't about some dystopian future way down the road. These things are happening today, and every entrepreneur should read this book to understand the challenges of the next decade." (Daymond John, star of ABC's Shark Tank, best-selling author of The Power of Broke, and founder of FUBU)

"Andrew Yang is one of those rare visionaries who puts dreams into action. The War on Normal People is both a clear-eyed look at the depths of our social and economic problems and an innovative roadmap toward a better future." (Arianna Huffington, Founder and CEO of Thrive Global)

"A sobering portrait of a crumbling polity...[and] a provocative work of social criticism." (Kirkus Reviews)

UBI: Case Made

I wish Yang had stopped at UBI. The ideas presented after it in the book were overreaching. People can only take so much radical change at once. The UBI case is made thoroughly and, importantly, from a capitalist perspective. Everyone interested in social policy ought to read at least that much of the book. The rest... Let's get the UBI done first. Then maybe we CNS go there.

America's bare and hard truth

Andrew Yang paints a bleak but factual picture of the America of today and points to it's most impactful problems. This book is not for the faint hearted - often I had to take a break as some truths can be hard to hear or face. At the end of the day, if you are listening, chances are you are part of the problem or unknowingly supporting a system that is slowly but surely dooming most of society. However, there are solutions and it is not too late.

Highly recommend this book to better understand the current state of America and what is possible.

Time to wake up!

Must read. Understanding the present mess we’re in is the first step in avoiding the on coming disaster that is coming. I live in Canada and see that the potential dangers in the USA will very likely have a negative effect on us too. Excellent book.

Tremendously thought-provoking

Andrew Yang provides a tremendously thought-provoking work by telling a serious and harrowing interpretation of our current circumstances before finishing with a compellingly optimistic set of solutions.

Well written, made me reconsider political ideas

I'm normally far right, conservative/ libertarian who hates all things government. Although this book doesn't make a compelling enough case for me to accept wholesale, it has made me think and reconsider. It's a little bit unrealistic and utopian, but it presents a compelling case for debate.

the perfect counterbalance to the rational optimis

Matt Ridley's the rational optimist goes over all of capitalism, the good and bad, and makes the case that everything will work out.
Andrew yang has come to the opposite conclusion, he believes this time is different, and has the stats to prove it.
Jobs will disappear at a rate never seen before, people will react poorly, and chaos will emerge.
This is one of those rare moments in history where a great thinker will do something about his ideas.

Interesting and thought provoking

I picked this up because I found Andrew Yang as a candidate interesting and didn't understand he's politics. I enjoyed the book. I'm Canadian so it has no direct impact on me how the election turns out but it's still something I want to understand and follow. I have no economic or legal training, I'm not university educated and I'm not young but his explanations and incite on current and future issues had me think. I also wonder if other politicians are even considering some of the things he points out as the future of AI and the job market. I don't have the background knowledge to understand the reasoning behind all he says but I feel he explains with logic, compassion, understanding and a desire (I believe) to do what's best. The freedom dividend makes more sense to me now, (not saying a agree) and I hope Andrew Yang continues with his educational and compassionate approach to leadership. I believe Andrew Yang cares about all Americans, about the country and will put the needs of the people ahead of his own needs, something I don't feel the current leadership (Trump) does. I believe Andrew Yang is someone to watch, a leader in the making and I hope we see a lot more of him.
