Marathons have become too easy for some runners. What was once the pinnacle of achievement in a runner's life is now a stepping stone for extraordinary adventure in ultramarathoning. The number of ultrarunners - those running distances of 50k (31 miles), 50 miles, 100k (62 miles), or 100 miles - is growing astronomically each year. To date, there has been no practical guide to ultramarathoning. Now, Bryon Powell has written Relentless Forward Progress, the first how-to manual for aspiring ultrarunners.

Description
Long before Cory Reese strapped on his first pair of running shoes, he learned the key to being a successful ultrarunner: He knew how to suffer.
In Nowhere Near First, Cory shares his deeply personal story about experiencing his father’s suicide at a young age, and how this led to a career in endurance running and a desire to live life to the fullest.
Nowhere Near First is a humorous, captivating, and uplifting account of Cory’s memorable ultramarathon experiences. Not only does Cory’s entertaining and powerful writing allows listeners a unique perspective into the challenges and rewards of running, but it also inspires each of us to turn tragedy into triumph.
“Cory Reese writes with humor, humbleness and honesty. His story is both uplifting and real, and his tales of persistence and perseverance are sure to inspire, whether you’re at the front of the pack or nowhere near first. Regardless of the title, this book’s a winner!” (Dean Karnazes, author of Ultramarathon Man: Confessions of an All-Night Runner)
“Cory Reese’s book, Nowhere Near First, is an immensely entertaining and profoundly educational story about overcoming challenges to forge a meaningful life. Reese’s story is must-read for people looking to find meaning and purpose in modern-day society.” (Karl Hoagland, publisher, UltraRunning Magazine)
“Cory has penned a very personal account of overcoming hardship in his personal and athletic life. Nowhere Near First tells his story of perseverance and survival in a vivid, down and dirty way that peaks with his extraordinarily positive way of looking at life.” (Marshall Ulrich, author of Running On Empty: An Ultramarathoner’s Story of Love, Loss, and a Record-Setting Run Across America)

Beautifully captures the joy of running
I absolutely loved this book, along with his new book 'Into the Furnace'. If you think Ulta Marathoners are some high-level elite people, this book will change your mind. Cory tells us in his low key, everyman style how he began running recently in 2009 and how it has captured his life leading to marathons, ultra marathons and multi-day events. His joy and humility just burst from the pages - or the headphones if you listen to the audiobook as I did running the trails near our home. Although, as the title indicates, he is happy running at the middle or the back of the pack, given his remarkable abilities to run many 100 milers and beyond that he does, his athletic ability is definitely superlative!
Cory's personality comes through in his humble narration - he is a nice person who you'd be glad to meet - I think you'll like this book as much as I did.

Great book!
Really enjoyed this book. Great story and easy to listen to. It's always nice when the author reads their own book but in this instance I don't think the author did it justice (sorry Cory!). I just felt a professional narrator could have brought the stories out a bit more. But overall an enjoyable listen.
