Story
When Matt Ballard was starting out his career, three boys were murdered in the same area, the remote and bleak Gibbet Fen. When the main suspect was killed in a hit-and-run, the killings stopped. But Matt was not satisfied that the real murderer had been caught. Over 25 years later, Matt gets a photo in an unmarked envelope. It's of the Gibbet Fen crime scene. And the picture was taken before the murder took place. More photos arrive, relating to the historic murders, as well as intimate pictures of Matt's very secret private life.

Story
The story opens with the apparently accidental drowning of a sixth form student in the Norfolk countryside. As a matter of routine, or so it seems, the case passes across the desk of Detective Sergeant Smith, recently returned to work after an internal investigation into another case that has led to tensions between officers at Kings Lake police headquarters. As an ex-DCI, Smith could have retired by now, and it is clear that some of his superiors wish that he would do so.

Publisher's Summary
Twenty years ago: a farmer and his wife are cut to pieces by a ruthless serial killer.
Now: a woman is viciously stabbed to death in the upmarket kitchen of her beautiful house on the edge of the marshes.
Then a man called Daniel Kinder walks into Saltern police station and confesses to the murder.
But DI Rowan Jackman and DS Marie Evans of the Fenland Constabulary soon discover that there is a lot more to Daniel than meets the eye. He has no memory of the first five years of his life and has a rather unusual obsession with his mother....
Full of twists and turns, this is a crime thriller that will keep you gripped until the shocking ending.

Solid book!
Super easy read (listen), likeable characters, no one does anything super annoying like go off on their own despite advice, and overall the mystery is entertaining. It tells all its storylines well, and paints a vivid picture. The opening sequence is vividly bloody however so if you're squeamish be warned

Confusing, but all comes together
Not going to lie, I was confused for majority of it with all of the twists but it was a decent book. Not sure I would have read it but the narrator did such an amazing job I kept on listening and I’m happy I did.

A refreshing story!
This was such a refreshing murder mystery, nothing like I’ve read before. The characters are complex and likeable, and I really like how positive and deep some of the relationships between them are. I just felt like I was reading about some genuinely good people with good intentions, which is so rare! The reveal at the end is unexpected enough, but not so much that you feel like only a minimal motive was behind it. It’s believable enough and doesn’t feel like a rushed last minute conclusion like many of these kinds of books are. And the narrator is perfect, his incredible voice acting made it easy to keep up with the different characters.
