Description

New York Times best seller

The inside story of the Houston Astros, whose relentless innovation took them from the worst team in baseball to the World Series in 2017 and 2019

“Reiter’s superb narrative of how the team got there provides powerful insights into how organizations - not just baseball clubs - work best.” (The Wall Street Journal)

Astroball picks up where Michael Lewis’s acclaimed Moneyball leaves off, telling the thrilling story of a championship team that pushed both the sport and business of baseball to the next level.

In 2014, the Astros were the worst baseball team in half a century, but just three years later they defied critics to win a stunning World Series. In this book, Ben Reiter shows how the Astros built a system that avoided the stats-versus-scouts divide by giving the human factor a key role in their decision-making.

Sitting at the nexus of sports, business, and innovation, Astroball is the story of the next wave of thinking in baseball and beyond, at once a remarkable underdog tale and a fascinating look at the cutting edge of evaluating and optimizing human potential.

Great book but…

Great book, very interesting. But you gotta understand that the book was wrote before we learned about the sign stealing scandal.

A Very Entertaining Baseball Book

This book is a very entertaining mix of character studies and arguments for a mix of quantitative and qualitative measures in approaches to baseball management. The character studies are the greater contributions to discussions about baseball and are more likely to hook the casual fan. The argumentative parts of the book echo things that appear elsewhere and one can question them, but they are compelling explanations of the success of the Astros in particular and are well-grounded here in stories that should hook those new to the debates. Most importantly, this book is a lot of fun. I listened to it pretty compulsively. That is one of my main criteria for a good sports read and so I was glad to see this book fulfill it so easily. #Audible1

I am now a huge Ben Reiter fan

I learnt a lot about the Astros and baseball, as well, given I am more of a football fan. I wish he’d written Doug Pederson’s Fearless, which was so much less inspiring. He did a fine balance of baseball facts and colour, bringing the subject to life. I can’t wait to read more of his work and I’m glad he’s a relatively young guy with years of writing left in him.
