A once up-and-coming detective, she's been given this beat as punishment after filing a sexual harassment complaint against a supervisor. But one night she catches two cases she doesn't want to part with: the brutal beating of a prostitute left for dead in a parking lot and the killing of a young woman in a nightclub shooting. Ballard is determined not to give up at dawn.

Haller is immediately charged with murder but can’t post the exorbitant $5 million bail. Mickey elects to represent himself and is forced to mount his defense from his jail cell in downtown Los Angeles. Even if he can obtain a not-guilty verdict, Mickey understands that it won’t be enough. In order to be truly exonerated, he must find out who really committed the murder and why. LAPD Detective Renée Ballard tracks a terrifying serial rapist whose trail has gone cold, with the help of the newest volunteer to the Open-Unsolved Unit: Patrol Officer Maddie Bosch, Harry’s daughter.
Written by: Michael Connelly
Publisher's Summary
LAPD Detective Renée Ballard teams up with Harry Bosch in the new work of fiction from number-one New York Times best-selling author Michael Connelly.
Renée Ballard is working the night beat again and returns to Hollywood Station in the early hours only to find a stranger rifling through old file cabinets. The intruder is retired detective Harry Bosch, working a cold case that has gotten under his skin. Ballard kicks him out but then checks into the case herself, and it brings a deep tug of empathy and anger.
Bosch is investigating the death of 15-year-old Daisy Clayton, a runaway on the streets of Hollywood who was brutally murdered and her body left in a dumpster like so much trash. Now, Ballard joins forces with Bosch to find out what happened to Daisy and finally bring her killer to justice.
What the critics say
"It was only last year that Connelly introduced Ballard, a fierce and fascinating new protagonist who instantly emerged as a reader favorite. Bosch, meanwhile, is a grizzled veteran by now; Dark Sacred Night marks the 21st novel to center on him. But fans always finish eager to come back for more." (David Canfield, Entertainment Weekly)

Love the Harry Bosch series however the performance was distracting.
I have endured countless different performances listening to the series and the back and forth between the two narrators I found distracting in this release and had me considering turning it off.

Dynamic new partnership
Wow! Couldn’t stop listening to this story. There is the usual subtle character development, deft handling of emotional connections between characters, Always an interesting plot. The friendship between Harry and Renee grows s,ow,y, and certainly not without its doubts, and differences in approach to police work. Each recognizes a kindred spirit, wanting justice, going that extra bit to solve a case. Renee balances Harry’s more relaxed view of procedure with a more disciplined approach to the legal system. However she, like, Bosch bends the rules too, the secret of their ability to solve almost forgotten old cases. Great stuff, and avidly looking forward to future adventures of Bosch and Ballard. Thanks for wonderful entertainment t, Mr. Connelly!

Please, One Narrator!
Totally distracting listening to two readers. There is simply no way Christine Lakin can sound like Harry. No one captures Harry better than Titus Welliver. Happy to listen to Christine narrate a Renee Ballard book, but leave Harry alone!

Book was great, two voices same character was not!
When I saw two narrators on the book I thought it would be great. I was thinking that Titus Welliver would voice all of Bosch and other male characters and then Christine Lakin would do the female voices. I didn't care who would read the rest. I really didn't like the way it was done with complete chapters splitting between the two voices especially Titus' Bosch versus Christine's Bosch - just didn't work for me. Not for the same character in the same book. Unfortunately the next few audios in the series look like they're doing the same, so my Bosch listening streak ends here. I'll just move to reading the paperbacks for the next couple of stories since the stories are excellent and find another audio series to listen to.

Single narrator only please
I found it very difficult to follow the story with two narrators. I often listen with large gaps between listens, and found this story very difficult to follow. It might be just me though. Won't stop listening to Connelly books, but will be hesitant to purchase if more than one narrator is used.

Loved this one!
I love it when Connelly has his characters together in one book. It always takes me a few chapters to get used to a new narrator...I really liked having both male and female narrators for this one.
