Although clinical research has been conducted on narcissism as a disorder, less is known about its effects on victims who are in toxic relationships with partners with Narcissistic Personality Disorder. Individuals with this disorder engage in chronic devaluation and manipulation of their partners, a psychological and emotional phenomenon known as "narcissistic abuse". Unfortunately, the full extent of what narcissistic abuse entails is not taught in any psychology class or diagnostic manual.

Description
A mental-health expert sheds light on "gaslighting" - the manipulative technique used by sociopaths, narcissists, and others - offering practical strategies to cope and break free.
He's the charmer - the witty, confident, but overly controlling date. She's the woman on your team who always manages to take credit for your good work. He's the neighbor who swears you've been putting your garbage into his trash cans, the politician who can never admit to a mistake. Gaslighters are master controllers and manipulators, often challenging your very sense of reality. Whether it's a spouse, parent, coworker, or friend, gaslighters distort the truth - by lying, withholding, triangulation, and more - making their victims question their own reality and sanity. Dr. Stephanie Sarkis delves into this hidden manipulation technique, covering gaslighting in every life scenario, sharing:
- Why gaslighters seem so "normal" at first
- Warning signs and examples
- Gaslighter "red flags" on a first date
- Practical strategies for coping
- How to co-parent with a gaslighter
- How to protect yourself from a gaslighter at work
- How to walk away and rebuild your life
With clear-eyed wisdom and empathy, Dr. Sarkis not only helps you determine if you are being victimized by a gaslighter - she gives you the tools to break free and heal.

An important read
This book will shine a light on some of the people you live with and work with. It completely opened my eyes up to what I experienced as a child and have experienced and continue to experience as an adult.

I'm torn
I started this book and was enjoying it and was better understanding what gaslighting is and all its different forms. It is repetitive but what bothered me more with this book, in particular the political chapter is the author is definitely gaslighting/propaganda against the right. I find it ironic that a book like this is doing exactly what they warn you to look out for. The author should have kept his personal political feelings out of it because that in itself is gaslighting. After that I was totally turned off by the book and now saw everything through a different lens now. So if you like what he did then you are a gaslighter yourself sadly. He never addresses examples from the other side which is most telling but would have show more unbiased views but truly he should have left it out all together. So unfortunately politics ruined it for me and I am sure others picked up on it as well. For those reasons and the repetitiveness of it I would recommend looking for a different book on the subject IMO.

Could have put this in one chapter
It felt like the author was just repeating the same things over and over, the chapters had different angles but it seemed to be the same general points that were being made every time. I definitely feel like I wasted time on this, my goal was to understand the behavior better and how to best deal with people who use gaslighting at times, but the whole book only spoke from the angle that this behavior was an individual's entire personality base and basically just kept saying to have nothing to do with them. I'm sure that is true in some cases but I know some people also just use this behavior unconsciously and it would have been nice if she could have spared a chapter to deal with more general cases and not just one class of extreme profiles for the entire book.
