Description

A perfect family is shattered when their daughter goes missing in this "brilliantly executed" New York Times best-selling thriller from a "master storyteller" (Providence Sunday Journal).

You've lost your daughter.

She's addicted to drugs and to an abusive boyfriend. And she's made it clear that she doesn't want to be found.

Then, by chance, you see her playing guitar in Central Park. But she's not the girl you remember. This woman is living on the edge, frightened, and clearly in trouble.

You don't stop to think. You approach her, beg her to come home.

She runs.

And you do the only thing a parent can do: You follow her into a dark and dangerous world you never knew existed. Before you know it, both your family and your life are on the line. And in order to protect your daughter from the evils of that world, you must face them head on.

Hard Pass

This book was dreadfully uncreative and boring. It felt like the author took a bunch of common tropes and cliches and put them in a hat and then strung a plot together to include whatever he pulled out. Cults? Check. Drug addict? Check. Cool hitman? Check. Secrets? Checkcheckcheckcheck.

I did not care about the characters, I did not care about what their goals were and when some of them straight up died all I could think was 'well at least that's one less POV to slog through'.

All of the drama revolved around secrets that characters kept for inexplicable reasons. I am protecting you! I love you like nobody's ever loved before! I double pinky promise swore it, like super serious cross my heart and hope to die type stuff OK? Really!? In the face of crack dens and hitmen and people being in comas with these impossible stakes? Sure.

Anyways no bigs. Police investigations vanish. Big bad shoot outs that end with four dead. Pft app good. Coma perfectly resolved though we weren't sure if they'd make it. Everyone's doing great, let's wrap this sucker up with a neat little bow but wait! We're just going to exposition dump all this schlock on you in a chapter to make everything so much deeper and bring it full circle because life's not perfect and everything's not as great as I just told you it was. Dun dun dunnnnnnn! More secrets! Ugh.

The writing ranged from serviceable to good. The action sequences felt pretty weak and confused. There's a fine line between the chaos of life or an action sequence and confusion. These were mostly just confused to build tension and mystery which in my opinion is lazy. The third person limited was also frustrating. When you don't see what happens in scene to build mystery and tension but it fixates on a sentient man bun that had more depth than the cut-out coffee barista it was attached to you wonder where the writers priorities are at.

The audio book performance was great though and really made the whole thing bareable. Maybe this was a miss or maybe the author just isn't for me, this is all opinion after all. I will try something else in the new year and see.

Average Thriller

I've never read any Coben before. Pretty good writing, if a little nihilistic. Besides the protagonist, not many characters with any redeeming features.
The plot in this one is overly complicated. The plot threads are a little too diverse, too far-fetched to be woven into a realistic, concise story.

Steven Weber is an above-average narrator. Good pacing, excellent enunciation, plenty of emoton in his characters.

Another entertaining story from "The Master"!!

Harlan Coben was the very first book I read, as recommended by my best friend, after years of no desire to read (or even listen to) a book! She said to start with one of his and said I would enjoy "The Woods" by Coben. I only ever read what I absolutely had to and for 20 years or more never picked up a book for entertainment purposes. So I listened to that book and was thoroughly entertained. My Mom always believed that my dislike of reading was due to the types of books I was required to read from grades 7-12 (around that time anyway) because as a young girl (toddler to about grade 5 or 6) I used to love reading! Some book topics really negatively affected me and my desire to read slowly dwindled. Harlan Coben's master story telling abilities got me interested in reading again. I think I have listened to all his books and really enjoy them. This book was no different!

It had everything you want in a story. It kept my interest, moved at a good pace, had characters and scenarios one can relate to and if that isn't enough... it had a great "twist". I really thought I knew what the twist was, & to some degree I was correct. However, the twist was much more than your normal reveal and was beautifully woven throughout the novel and was a surprise even I didn't see coming!

Totally worth a credit in my opinion! So what are you waiting for? Purchase this book already:) Lol

It's a nail biter!!!!

Harlan Coben takes everyday people and turns them into super humans that will take the chances and go above and beyond for the people they love.
This book deals with so many issues. The number one is how much can your love and responsibilities be tested? Can you still trust when trust is broken? The family portrayed is so dysfunctional. But what comes through is their devotion to each other. In the beginning you don't see it so much. When the protagonist Simon Greene finally finds his missing daughter panhandling in Central Park she wants nothing to do with him. She's strung out on drugs and her equally strung out and abusive boyfriend intervenes to keep him away. But then the boyfriend turns up murdered.
There is another plot going on simultaneously and the connection is not clear in the beginning. The two come together is a crazy twisted climax.
But wait !
The story doesn't end there... The real kick is in the epilogue... Wow! Some secrets should never see the light of day.
This is an Excellent, fast paced thriller that builds momentum the further into the story it gets.
Steven Weber's narration is perfect for this book.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

not quite ....

.... what i was expecting. i love Coben's writing but this one fell short for me. i forced myself to keep going - it did get more interesting near the end but still wasn't as good as previous suspense novels of his. i'll still buy his next novel though - i haven't fallen off the fan wagon completely.

Disappointing

I am less and less happy with his stand-alone books. (The Myron Bolitar series is amazing.) But I find that when authors are great, they start to get unquestionably great reviews. This book was just "phoned in." Wildly farfetched plot, predictable characters, boring side plots. Steven Weber narration saved it, I almost returned it!

Phenomenal

Typical Coben brilliance. My only regret is that I listened to the entire thing in one day.

Convoluted

I usually really enjoy Harlan Cohen’s books, and this one was ok, but it seemed very convoluted and complicated. All the random details came together at the very end, so it made sense, but the story still seemed a bit unnecessarily complicated.
I love Stephen Weber as the narrator and I’ll continue to listen to Harlan Coben. This just wasn’t my favorite.

Do Not Waste a Credit

This is the first time I have written a negative review on a Harlan Coben book but this was a ridiculous story. The plot was out of control and the characters except for Elena and Cornelius were unlikeable. Simon was totally self serving and a huge whiner.

Another great Harlan Coben book

This was another great read by Harlan Coben with excellent audible narration. I must admit that I miss the Myron Bolitar books and wish he would write another one of those as I really miss those characters! That being said, this is a good book and it definitely kept my interests as almost all of his books do- he is one of my favorite writers. I could've done without the negative reflections about religion.I am so over authors putting politically correct bias against Christianity in their work- ie comparing it to Greek mythology etc. That aside, this is definitely a book worth reading/ listening too!

EQUIVALENT OF A BAD B MOVIE

The story started out with an okay flow but once the "plot" and/or story line started to become clear it was a huge eye roll of old themes, ridiculous and unbelievable twists. I regret the credit and the time I invested in this mess that gets really messy at the end trying to explain things.

Meh

I was interested at first but the story started wearing on me. By the time I got to the end I pretty much hated all the characters. I usually like Coben's books but I'm glad to this one is behind me.

Too Outlandish.

I had stayed away for Coben for awhile, and now I once again know why. While the concept of opiates infecting every family is real, the story itself is just too preposterous. His wife in a coma for weeks without a serious head wound for weeks after a gunshot? From what? Why? At some points, the story should be linear and believable on some level. All good fiction is. No more for me.
