Narcissistic abuse was originally defined as a specific form of emotional abuse of children by narcissistic parents, but more recently the term has been applied more broadly to refer to any abuse by a narcissist (someone that who admires their own attributes), in particular in adult-to-adult relationships the abuse may be mental, physical, financial, spiritual or sexual. If you have been through an abusive relationship with someone who has Narcissistic Personality Disorder, you will know that no one understands what you are going through unless they have personally experienced it.

Although clinical research has been conducted on narcissism as a disorder, less is known about its effects on victims who are in toxic relationships with partners with Narcissistic Personality Disorder. Individuals with this disorder engage in chronic devaluation and manipulation of their partners, a psychological and emotional phenomenon known as "narcissistic abuse". Unfortunately, the full extent of what narcissistic abuse entails is not taught in any psychology class or diagnostic manual.

The causes of Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder range from severe neglect to monstrous abuse. Many survivors grew up in houses that were not homes-in families that were as loveless as orphanages and sometimes as dangerous. If you felt unwanted, unliked, rejected, hated, and/or despised for a lengthy portion of your childhood, trauma may be deeply engrained in your mind, soul, and body. This book is a practical guide to recovering from lingering childhood trauma. It is copiously illustrated with examples of the author's and his clients' journeys of recovering.

A MUST HAVE!!!

Description
From a leading voice on recovering from toxic relationships, a deeply insightful guide to getting back to your "old self" again - in order to truly heal and move on.
Jackson MacKenzie has helped millions of people in their struggle to understand the experience of toxic relationships. His first book, Psychopath Free, explained how to identify and survive the immediate situation. In this highly anticipated new audiobook, he guides listeners on what to do next - how to fully heal from abuse in order to find love and acceptance for the self and others.
Through his work with thousands of survivors of abusive relationships, Jackson discovered that survivors frequently have symptoms of trauma lasting long after the relationship is over. These may include feelings of numbness and emptiness, depression, mood swings, isolation, perfectionism, rumination, caretaking and people-pleasing, a need for control, physical maladies, substance abuse, and more.
But he also found that it is possible to work through these symptoms and find fulfillment and love on the other side. In Whole Again, he shares insights and tools for working through the protective self we've developed so that we can finally move on to live a full and authentic life - to once again feel light, free, whole, and ready to give and receive love.
Like Brené Brown's The Gifts of Imperfection and John Bradshaw's Healing the Shame that Binds You, Whole Again offers hope and multiple strategies to anyone who has survived a toxic relationship, as well as anyone suffering the effects of a breakup involving lying, cheating, and other forms of abuse - to release old wounds and safely let the love back inside where it belongs.

Find the voice that most speaks to you
There are many books on this topic - if you are here seeking, that means you have something you want to sort out. Take some time and see which books and voices speak to you and feel GOOD. This one might be one of them - ultimately, this kind of healing will be different for everyone.
What I loved about this book was how humanizing it was. Just the right amount of personal reflection (without going deep into memoir territory) and case studies (without being overly clinical). It was honest, grounding and encouraging.
Yes, there was quite a bit of repetition in this book as another reviewer pointed out - which can be of service. If you are the audience for this book, you will likely be doubting yourself and questioning things so much that the repetition will help combat the hamster wheel of confusion that may already be going on in your mind. We need to hear things over and over again to change a pattern. You may even want to re-listen to this book (or, specific parts of it) that feel most relevant for your experience.
Perhaps most importantly, this book is brimming with compassion. I found the narrator's voice to be soothing and friendly. It created the space for the power of the content to make it's way through.

WARNING: unorganized and unprofessional info
It's not clear whether the author intends to help the victims or the perpetrators of abuse. The lines between victim and victimizer are incomprehensibly blurred. The victims of abuse are put into certain labeled boxes and therefore if you carry none of those labels you cannot relate. Even those labels (i.e. NPD) are described in a very rigid manner. Another issue I have with this book is that the role of the abuser/victimizer/perpetrator is ignored and the responsibility of the hurt feelings is totally placed on the victim. We need to understand that in the cases of abuse (imbalance of power) the victim is NOT to be blamed. Victims are NOT trying to recreate patterns of being abused because of scarred childhood. Look for Lundy Bancroft's books on the subject of abusive relationships if you're interested. Most of his books on this subject deal with various forms of abuse (emotional, physical etc.).

Kind of Dissappointed
I really liked Jackson MacKenzie's first book, "Psychopath Free," and so I bought this one. I found this book extremely confusing and upsetting. After listening to this book I feel my healing journey has been sort of derailed and my mind is now filled with self doubts. Moreover, the book is not interesting enough to hold my attention (this is hardly ever an issue for me) and I have to concluded that the material is unmistakably boring. This is surprising to me, since I'm positively obsessed with the subject. As I listened to this book, I've tried to figure out the meaning of each chapter, but there dosn't seem to be any concrete meaning. This book meanders and retraces repetitive circles, and sort of leads to nowhere. It also seems to defend narcissists and attack the victims of narcissistic abuse--indirectly blaming them for being blind to their problems and being unwilling to address the "numb feeling inside" that the author has not been able to resolve in himself either. I would not recommend this book to people seeking real advice for inner healing. It was well narrated though.

Good content, but to much repeat
It's not often I leave negative reviews & I apologize to the author,.
I honestly don't understand how it got so many great reviews. Don't get me wrong, the content was great and so was the narrator. However, the meat and potatoes could have been conveyed in a few hours, tops. It seemed the author consistently repeated the same points, just in a hundred different ways. If I want to drill content into my head, I would like the choice to do so.
I can summarize it here - if you want to heal chronic issues caused by an unhealed emotional trauma, then you should practice mindfulness. I feel the author psychoanalyzed the heck out of the wounded personality types in order to help the readers understand which type(s) they are. Also, so the readers can recognize which types they may be attracted to in order to avoid those types of wounded souls. Here are some (if not all) of the wounded personality types: the Codependent, Cluster B disorders (the Narcissist, the Borderline Personality), the Complex PTSD type, and the Avoidance type.
I wish the author dedicated more time explaining how to practice mindfulness with a some exercises to illustrate what he/she means by mindfulness. I wish it had its own section or chapter. I feel as though the author basically referred me to a couple of other books that went into greater detail about mindfulness.
The overall message was abundantly clear. However, it repeated so much that I became suspicious, wondering if the author provided filler in order to stretch out the length of the book (longer books are often sold at a higher price). I hope the author makes future amendments to add more original content, especially regarding mindfulness, and make the book more concise.
